  • Induction and Quitting Smoking, Help!!

Ok before you all refer me to the acceptable foods list.......I have read it, but since I am not all the way thru the book yet I was hoping someone may have a tip or idea about something to keep at hand to ease with quitting smoking...some sort of snack. I have some cinnamon toothpicks but my husband was hoping he could snack on sunflower seeds to keep his mouth and hands busy. Is that ok? Any ideas would be a big help.

    Thanks

Sure have........the problem is you're just replacing the method of intake with the patch. Im quite hopeful about the Chantix I was just hoping there was an acceptable snack or something that we could use to keep our hands and mouths busy during induction.

Sunflower seeds would not be induction-legal, but will be fine once you reach the nuts/seeds rung of the second phase of Atkins, OWL (ongoing weight loss).

If possible try to avoid sitting and snacking while watching TV etc as for many of us this is what got us needing to diet in the first place!

Try substituting some other activity (some craft thing to keep the hands busy while sitting or doing something different like going for a walk, exercising, etc) but if you really 'need' a snack perhaps save some of your carb 'allowance' and cut up celery, cauliflower, green beans, etc into small bite-sized pieces to snack on with some legal dressing or dip.

If we can manage to stop eating while doing something else it focuses us on the fact that we are eating - how many of us have looked in amazement at the empty packet of crisps or nuts wondering where they all went!!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Re: Induction and Quitting Smoking, Help!!

When I quit (while I was on Atkins) last year, I chewed a piece of gum here and there. BUT, what i think was better for me in the long run (not that it helped me quit smoking) was that whenever I wanted to munch, I'd sip on water.

Replace your bad habits with good ones! Munching is just another bad habit. Get up and walk around, if possible. I quit on a road trip to West Virginia! I couldn't take a walk, but I did keep a water bottle on me at all times.

Good for you for quitting smoking, it was the best thing I did for myself!

If you absolutely HAVE to have food...veggies would be my bet. Celery cut into small cubes. Jicama, lettuce, cucumber.

Re: Induction and Quitting Smoking, Help!!

Thanks for all the advice and encouragement. I am determined that this time I WILL make it. I know that even above getting to a healthy weight, quitting smoking is the single BEST thing anyone can do for their health and why waste a smokin hot bod to cigarettes!!!

Re: Induction and Quitting Smoking, Help!!

I have never been a smoker, but two of my close friends were, and they both quit at the same time. Very similar to what ValidRouge mentioned there.. They replaced their bad habits with good one.. Been three year for them now and I don't think they will ever think about returning back..

They used the Target store brand gum and water. They did that for 3-4 months I think and then stopped the gum gradually and started replacing it with regular sugar free gum (most brands have carbs there, so chose carefully there)..

They still chew regular sugar free gum from time to time.. but like everybody else does, it is more now of a better breath odor than a habit. Good luck
