  • Anyone else going through this?

Do you have small children at home that you must cook for? Tonight I made them Spaggetti (their fav) and French Bread. But I had a small salad and some grilled Samon. But MAN I wanted their dinner!

Then tonight I made them home made cookies. I stayed away though.

Anyone who has small children in the house hold knows what WILL POWER is!

Re: Anyone else going through this?

Why not give them what you ate? It would have been better for them than pasta and bread, and getting them eating healthy foods young is easier than trying when they are older. My daughter (12) has friends that now will eat NOTHING but chicken nuggets, pizza and spaghetti, while flat-out refusing to touch vegetables, or even most fruit! And their mothers wonder why they are all overweight with bad skin while my daughter is the complete opposite. Not to mention, children NEED fat in their diet for brain proper brain development. This recent "low/no fat" for kids trend is criminally negligent IMHO. FAT is not the reason kids today are getting fatter.
100 pounds gone forever from 12/03-11/04. Thank you Dr. Atkins, may you rest in peace...

Ok... I have a 6 year old boy and a 1 1/2 year old daughter so I know about feeding kiddos. Now my 6 year old would live off of fast food chicken nuggets if I would let him and is so picky! The baby will eat almost anything. What I do when I am making a meal for the fam is prepare the main course so that I can eat it and then add a veggie I can eat. Then I add another side dish for them like pasta, potatoes...something like that. I have been trying to get the kids and my husband to eat healthier. Veggies are always a challenge at my house but I got my son to try asparagus. (it was wrapped in bacon....but...) I think it just helps to have them see you eating more veggies. The more experiment the more they will. He has also tried Jicama.

As far as spaghetti day...you could make your self some spaghetti squash and homemade sauce. That should really help.

Another thing I noticed is how much of their food I ate. I would have a bite as I would give them their meal/snack and then sometimes finish up what they didn't eat. I really had to make a conscience effort to not do that. Will power is hard but when you get into ketosis and out of the habit of snakcing all the time you don't get bothered by all of there food. Plus it is helpful to find substitutions for you favorite snacks.

Re: Anyone else going through this?

I have three very healthy, very tiny, girls. I am just happy to get one of them to eat. We are actually seeing a Nutritionist for the middle one on her being so picky. She encourages that meal because she needs those carbs right now. I could have sat a plate of samon and a salad in front of them and had them NOT eat, but I opted not too.

My girls eat very well. And eating Speg/Bread does not mean that's all they eat. They do get plenty of fat in their diet. They love white and red meat (not any kind of sea food though).

Really just wanted to vent about will power, and not get into a debate about their food. Thanks for the advice though. I will continue to make good choices for them. And hopefully continue to have will power! Maybe I can slowley bring them over to my way of life!

          Yep,

Know exactly where you are coming from... I wanted to rip the cantelope right out of my 19 month old's hand the other day. My kid eats pretty healthy but is very picky, and i am happy when he eats anything. I have been making him things out of Jessica Seinfelds "deceptively delicious" cookbook, and it is very hard to resist the habitual urge to put his stuff in my mouth! It takes constant work.. good job for being able to stay away from their dinner!

No little kids.. just a boyfriend.

            Same thing, really.

He's a picky eater and hardly eats anything I buy unless I add sugar. The man even adds sugar to chili. Ugh. Of course, he does steal my cheese sticks. But seriously, last night I made roast marinade lamb.. and he comes at me with "I think I'll make a few hot dogs". I wanted to strangle him.

Re: Anyone else going through this?

I have a housefull and I know exactly what your talking about. Alot of times I make a family meal based around my meat and veggies but like it or not a lot of kids even when introduced to all sorts of "good foods" just won't eat them so you end up preparing what they will eat! My 2 year old will eat any veggie under the sun but my 4 year old raised exactly the same way gags when I steam veggies ........ so go figure!

I'm with you on the will power ........ pasta mashed potatoes ect all smell and look so good when I am making their meal ......... I have found myself on more then one occasion witht he fork to my mouth realising "what the heck are you doing Heidi????" Or almost licking my fingers .........

Hats off to all moms for having amazing will power!!!!!!!

There is NO way I would be able to resist French Bread....so I couldn't fix it.. But I do try to fix something I can eat and base things around them too..

Re: Anyone else going through this?

I have a husband, 9 year old, 2 year old and a 1 year old. I get my recipes from this site below and then have my family eat the same thing as I do (check out the hot dishes!). It works out well because they always eat fruit and bread for breakfast and I just eat my omlet by myself (they aren't big on eggs). They drink milk with their meals and they snack all day on kids snacky foods while I am still full from my eggs (that is the best thing about eggs). I find that one of the Atkins recipes really ends up giving them the rest of their food groups for the day (meat, cheese and veggies). I usually save my veggies for dinner because that works out better for everyone in my house.

I found that as time went on, I got used to watching my family eat carby foods. Now I hardly "see", and certainly don't miss much of that. It took time though.

Re: Anyone else going through this?

My husband is the cook in our house, and he made spaghetti and french bread just the other night. He was also sweet enough to make me two hamburger patties out of the meat for the sauce. So while he and my daughter had spaghetti for two nights, I had hamburgers with mayo and a lettuce "bun" for two nights. My dinner was so delicious that I didn't even crave their stuff. My husband usually tried to work around my lifestyle. If he makes something with pasta, he always makes sure to make me a pasta-less variation on the side so I don't feel left out of family dinner.
The difference between 'involvement' and 'commitment' is like an eggs-and-ham breakfast:
the chicken was 'involved' - the pig was 'committed'.
