  • Flax and net carbs?

I'm back for round two. Atkins worked like a charm for me 4 years ago, but the pounds crept up, so here I am, getting serious about losing again.

I love flaxmeal pancakes and others things made with flax. Do I count all of the flax carbs, or are they all offset by the fiber quotient?

      Re: Flax and net carbs?

Flax contains countable net carbs, contrary to what the label on Bob Redmill claims. We figured it out here a long time ago, with the help of a Canadian ADBBer because the labeling laws in Canada are much stricter than they are here in the US.

1 tablespoon of flaxmeal has about 0.7 net carbs. Not a big deal since flax consumption during Induction is limited to 1 tablespoon.

      For daily fiber supplementation
Chapter 8: "I recommend that you take one tablespoon of psyllium husks daily. Be sure to select a sugar-free product. You can also take one tablespoon of coarse wheat bran or flaxseed meal."

      For relief of constipation
Chapter 11: "If you are constipated, mix a tablespoon or more of psyllium husks in a cup or more of water and drink daily. Or mix ground flaxseed into a shake or sprinkle wheat bran on a salad or vegetables."

So there is a limit set forth in the book. Again, if you use the flax as a food, then the On-Going Weight Loss phase is the appropriate phase to do that. During Induction it's only used as a fiber supplement or as a constipation reliever in the amounts specified in the book.

        Re: Flax and net carbs?

Thanks for the clarification. I'll have to cut down the amount of flax I've been consuming then, as I'm still in induction. Guess I'll have to go back to my crustless quiche breakfasts.

Breakfasts are the hardest for me, as I'm not a big fan of eggs, and few things appeal to me in the morning.
