  • Is diet soda okay?

Good morning!!! I started induction last Tuesday, and so far, I am down 8lbs!!! I need to know if diet sodas are okay. I notice that they have asparatame in them, but is that okay? I drink my water faithfully, but every now and again, I need something else besides water. Something with some flavor in it. Is it okay to drink the diet sodas or not? Please, someone with experience, let me know if it's okay. I don't want to stall because of the sodas. (I know there's Crystal Light out there as well, but .... it doesn't have the FIZZ!!! It also tastes a little sweet for me)

Stay away from the aspartame sweetened ones, Diet Rite is sweetened with splenda and is a better alternative.

You could have some seltzer h20 and use some SF torani syrups in there. The syrup is made with splenda!

        What Emma said!

I drink a Diet Rite (cola) when I am craving one. Zero sugar, carbs, or caffine. Which is good because caffine can lead to sweet cravings in some.

Okay!! I'll go to Walmart this afternoon and look for the Diet Rite. (That sounds more up my alley anyway, especially if they're the flavored kind!!! )

                Re: Is diet soda okay?

Don't make any judgements about how you are doing until you have completed two weeks of induction. Just stick fast and strict to the rules of induction, eat right, drink your water. Then you will have a clear picture at the end of the two weeks about your metabolism and how to carry on.

Fretting each day is futile and will just drive you nuts, just stick to plan and it will come out right in the end.

Not to sound silly, but I can't quite figure out what's wrong with aspartame. I've read and re-read the bit in the book about it and I just don't understand. Will it cause my blood sugar to spike or is it just an unhealthy sweetener? I'm confused

The way I understand it, Aspartame is purely chemical based, where as Splenda has it's more natural origins in sugar. Aspartame has been known to stall people out. I don't think it spikes blood sugar tho.

                      Re: Is diet soda okay?

I just stated Induction yesterday and I still have my diet sodas with aspertame and still drink my coffee. Those are things I don't like to do without. I have done Atkins before and never cut these things out and I still lose weight real fast. It doesn't stall me at all or cause sugar cravings. I really think it depends on each individual. I don't think it is talked about too much so I would just do what works for you. I suppose if it did make me crave sweets or stall my weight loss, I would cut it all out. I guess I am lucky that way.

                          Re: Is diet soda okay?

The only ones I know ofwithout aspartame and made with slenda are the Dit Re brand. they have 7 different flavors to choose from. When I startd induction I bought a 2 liter and a 12 pac of dfferent flavors and have drank less than 1/4 ofthe 2 litr and 3 cans of soda since then. That was 19 da ago... nearly. They are just as sweet as they ever wee but because do not eat sweets now.... they are catchin my gag reflex. Everythign I use to eat either smells awful or is too sweet.

UK chaps, just thought you'd like to know that Sainsbury's make all their "own brand" diet fizzy drinks with sucralose. A few of them have fruit juices, or fruit vegetable colourings (these I am quite confuse about so I avoid) but I bought 2 packs of the Cream Soda as it's completely sans these things. Plus the label says "trace" carbs and it's really good.

Can you tell I'm trying desperately to have things for my sweet tooth?
