  • Concerns regarding Ketosis and alcohol

So yesterday was my 14th day of induction. I've been very good without cheating; however, yesterday afternoon, I met some friends at a bar after a PALS class. Long story short, after 5 vodka/diet cokes and one shot of tuaca, I had a very rough night. I've always been able to handle alcohol, but last night I was very, very sick. I hadn't drank much water that day. Have any of you had a really difficult experience being in ketosis and drinking alcohol?

I have never had a problem with alcohol and ketosis. Did you eat anything before you drank? If so how many hours before hand? Are you on the alcohol rung yet? Maybe you have to build up that carb count before the alcohol can be consumed. Maybe others will have better ideas.

I hadn't eaten much that day, but I'm starting to think it was my lack of water. I was stuck in a class all day and had little chance to drink. YUCK!!!
No alcohol for awhile. I'm very disappointed in letting myself down like this, but I'm going to keep going on induction.

        Alcohol and ketosis.....

Your body will metabolize the alcohol before it will metabolize the carbs, proteins and fats you ate along with the alcohol. So drinking alcohol puts your fat burning on hold. Also while you are burning up that alcohol, your body is busy storing the carbs, proteins and fats you had as glycogen and/or body fat.

As for checking it with the ketostix, it won't be accurate. The stix measure a specific ketone which is chemically similar to one of the breakdown products of alcohol metabolism. So, you may get a false positive result.

Being a cheap drunk and ketosis. In the collective experience of ADBB, it happens to some folks that they feel the effects of alcohol much more while on Atkins than before they were on it.

            Yep. What Megs said.

When you're in ketosis, you turn into a real cheap date for sure. Sorry you learned this the hard way!
