  • sugar in the ingredients but no carbs in the nutritional info

    Hi Folks,

I'm a bit confused. I'm on day 8 of induction and, in reading the boards, I saw another poster suggest that you can't have any kind of sugar, even (or especially) if it appears in the list of ingredients, whether or not it registers as carbs in the nutritional info. why should i care whether or not a product contains sugar if it doesn't contain enough to register on the nutritional labels?

any discussion would be extremely helpful.

    cheers,

    Chris

Probably because the manufacturers often (in USA) list the nutrition info for a very small serving - like one teaspoon - and if the amount of carbs is less than 0.5 carbs are allowed to say 'zero'. So if you have say one tablespoon of somehting and count that too as being zero carbs you might be underestimating the carbs in it. If there was for example 0.45 carbs per teaspoon and you eat one tablespoon (3 teaspoons) you would be eating 3 x 0.45 = 1.35 carbs, and if you had 3 tablepoons of it you would be eating 4 carbs - not zero!!

Also we are told not to eat 'added' sugar in the rules!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Let me give you a TRUE story.

I was losing VERY slowly. Actually, I would GAIN and then relose the same weight over and over and over for almost a YEAR. I couldn't figure out WHAT was going on. One day I happened to see the box for the syrup that makes Lipton UNSWEETENED iced tea from a machine in the cafeteria where I work. I was drinking that tea EVERY DAY. A 32 ounce (4 cup) glass, sometimes two (8 cups). The box said that the serving size was for 1/2 a cup or something like that. So my glasses were 8 servings or 16 servings depending if I had one or two 32 ouncers.

The carb count was zero (for 1/2 a cup). Probably because it was less than 0.5 grams of carb. But the INGREDIENTS included High Fructose Corn Syrup!!!!! So, let's say the actual carb count is .49 grams for 1/2 a cup, I was getting anywhere between 2-4 grams of this stuff a day.

Let me tell you, as SOON as I dropped the unsweet tea, I lost 7 pounds that week. It was causing me to retain water like mad, AND it was causing me to be grouchy because it was affecting my insulin.

Real sugar, and especially the High Fructose Corn Syrup impacts our bodies so much. It's unbelievable.

wow...thanks for the replies. I way in next thursday so...if i don't see the gains I'm looking for, I'll definitely change that aspect of the diet (its a pork sausage). I still seem to be in light to moderate ketosis at all times but as others have pointed out, that isn't necessarily indicative of anything.

        cheers!
