  • Mistakes I made during the first week of induction

    Hello Everyone.

What mistakes did you make during induction? What did you do about them?

I am a first time poster but this is my second time around on Atkins. Last time I lost 57lbs, and I've maintained most of that loss almost three years. But now it's time to lose the rest. So you'd think I would know better, but apparently not! So now, on with the show.

    Mistakes:
    1) Drank diet soda.
It took me a full week to realize that this was making me hungry! I couldn't figure out why I was so hungry this time around, when last time I had to fight myself to stuff food down my throat. I hope this is the only reason.

    2) Used Clinistix instead of Ketostix.
So there I was, testing EVERY time I went to the bathroom for the first five days, and the little yellow stick isn't changing colors! I'm losing weight and I KNOW I'm down to 20 carbs or less, but it wouldn't budge. Then I had the AHA! moment. Clinistix test for glucose, Ketostix check for ketones. Bought some Ketostix and voila! They pinked right up, showing I'm in ketosis.

    3) Not enough leafy greens.
I ate some vegetables but not enough and I definitely went overboard on the meat and cheese, which caused tummy troubles. I just can't emphasize enough the need to eat the leafy greens. Indeed, eat all the vegetables.

Even accounting for these mistakes I still lost 4lbs the first week. But I'll be on induction for another two weeks, counting today as my first day, because I haven't done it properly yet.

Heading over the Second Time Around Club....

I didn't eat near enough veggies and relied to much on processed foods. BTW I have done induction many times and in September I did a truly clean inductions (thanks to all the great info on this site) and I know it has had a lot to do with my success.

Crystal light addiction - I was drinking like two liters a day of the stuff. I thought the dizzy headaches were from Induction, but no - I was od'ing on equal. Now I can't even drink a diet coke without getting the headache. Bleah.

Yup, Applebee's injects their steaks with the stuff(dextrose). Imagine my surprise. Good thing I only went there once last week.

Well my first week I was drinkin gregular diet sodas and then found out aspartame is in them so I switched to diet sodas made from slpenda. Then I was eating sugar free jello which I founf out after a week that it had aspartame. When you first start you aren't used to label checks. lol. OOOOOO the big one was I was using the Atkins bars.

I am not finished with this time arounds first clean week, but I have done this WOL before (member since 2003) and here are some of the mistakes that I have made during my induction phase....

                1. I went overboard on my veggies
                2. Weighed myself everyday (to much of an emotional rollercoaster to do that for me)
                3. Ate too much cheese
                4. Cook legal food with illegal seasonings and sauces (still having trouble there).

                  Hi Samira -

Wow! You lost 50 pounds last time. How long did it take you to do that? Did you exercise also? So far I am on day 4/5 and gained a pound (eeek) - so I am trying to figure out what I am doing wrong.

WOW! You look great! I am only on Day 4/5 but have gained a pound! I am also a Crystal Lite junkie and that is all I drink all day.

Is this a big problem with weight loss? And yes, I was feeling dizzy yesterday.

                    Thanks,

                      Thanks,

Thanks for sharing about the jello. I am on day 4/5 and have gained a pound!!! I am also eating my fair share of those fat free sugar free jellos. Should I stop?

Thanks - I almost forgot to write that day on my daily intake.

                          johnnysmom,

We are only supposed to have 2-3 tbsp of cream a day during induction and also I have read that caffiene effects some peoples weight loss. I would definately cut back on both of them. Also SF Jello that you buy out in the stores I believe contains that aspartame (sp?), and that also effects some peoples weight loss. I found this recipe for No carb Jello off of Linda's web site that you might want to try, and it is induction legal too.

                          http://www.genaw.com/lowcarb/no_carb_jello.html

Beverages clear broth/bouillon (not all brands; read the label)
                            club soda
cream (heavy or light); limit to two to three tablespoons a day; note carbohydrate content
                            decaffeinated coffee or tea
diet soda made with sucralose (Splenda®)
essence-flavored seltzer (must say "no calories" and must not contain aspartame)
herb tea (without barley or any fruit sugar added)
                            lemon juice or lime juice (note that each contains 2.8 grams carbohydrate per ounce);
limit to two to three tablespoons mineral water spring water water *Excessive caffeine may cause unstable blood sugar and should be avoided by those who suspect they are caffeine dependent. Everyone should try to avoid caffeine. Grain beverages (coffee substitutes) are not allowed. Alcoholic beverages are also not permitted during Induction; those low in carbohydrates are an option, in moderation, in later phases.

I copied and pasted here off of a post from a "Kent". Some good info to consider.

Wow Tim, you lost 10lbs the first week! WTG!!! I noticed your goal is aroudn 50% weight loss so when you're finished are you going to write to People Magazine and be in their "Half Their Size" issue? I'll look for you!

Aspartame, too much cheese, not enough veggies, not reading the labels - sounds like the usual suspects.

Nancy - The 57 lbs - I lost those from October 2004 - June, 2005 and I've been maintaining them ever since.

I think Crystal Light counts 1 carb for every 8 oz (maybe 6oz) so don't forget to count those (I'm sure you already know this).

What I didn't say is that I, too, gained back a pound on day 4, so your gain is not unprecedented.
