I just can't seem to figure out how to get 20 net carbs on induction. I decided to do induction right for the next 2 weeks. But I need help. I need to keep calories between 1200 and 1300. I usually eat 1 cup of green beans at lunch and 2 cups salad greens at supper. That is only about 12 net carbs. I can't add much cheese or dairy as I think they stall me. Today I made it to 15 net carbs but my protein was higher than I would like it to be, want it between 65 and 75 grams. Maybe I don't need to worry about it.

Re: Can't get 20 net carbs on induction
Are you a vegan -- as I didn't notice any meats, cheese (okay just read about the cheese - sorry) eggs, Also you NEED to eat breakfast - it is important to eat at least every six hours. From my understanding it is extremely important to get as close to the 20 carbs as possible without going over -- do not count calories right now. Those that have been successful with this lifestyle will tell you that eating limited amounts of carbs will actually hinder your success. It there isn't any "reason" you really need to incorporate some fat into your diet. Also - do you have a copy of DANDR ~ if not get a copy it will explain alot and give you some more options on types of foods you can eat during induction. However I imagine some of those success people I mentioned earlier will also respond to this post and give you much better info that I can
Good luck

Re: Can't get 20 net carbs on induction
I'd never be able to keep my calories that low. Why do you "need" to count calories? You should not be walking around hungry. If you do, your body won't give up it's fat stores. Don't make yourself suffer -- it will not help! Eat when you're hungry and stop when your satisfied and let the calories work themselves out.
I love green beans too, but do you like tomatoes, asparagus, pumpkin or spaghetti squash? They are a bit higher in carbs, and are on the induction list.Female, 41

Re: Can't get 20 net carbs on induction
I wouldn't worry about not hitting 20 carbs. The book says 20 is the limit not the goal. That said, I would worry about the lack of variety and the calorie counting. Eat a wide variety of veggies and it will widen your taste buds and help you get all those nutrients we need. In addition, it will go a long way to preventing boredom and quitting. In addition, we shouldn't be counting calories on this WOL but rather eating when hungry and often to help correct the damage dieting has done to our metabolism. I eat a regular breakfast but then I have many small meals all day. It drives my coworker nuts I am sure but that way I am never hungry and I don't get highs and lows anymore. Keeping your calories artificially low will just make your body hold on to the weight. While higher calories teach your body that food is plentiful and high quality so there is no need to horde for famine. You may eat a lot for a few days but ketosis and a higher fat diet will do the counting for you.

Re: Can't get 20 net carbs on induction
Thanks for all the advice. See my Fit Day, I had 83 grams of protein yesterday with pork chops and chicken, 15 grams of carbs, and 93 grams of fat. I eat all kinds of verggies including canned pumpkin, brussles sprouts, rhubarb, broccoli, cauliflower etc. I am 5' tall, just don't need that many calories, wherein lies my weight problem. I hardly ever feel hungry and eat when I do. Thank Dr. A. for this WOE!!

In 1990 I had my weigth at 105 lb., down from a high of 160 lbs. in 1983. 1200 calories per day, 6 miles walked and ran per day, 2.5 hours of split strength training per day ( upper body 3 days per week and lower body 3 days per week with one day off. I began working at a full time job away from home in 1992 and promptly gained 65 lbs.)
Just isn't enough time in a day to exercise 4 hours a day when you work 10 hours a day, commute takes another 40 minutes. Now I struggle to get it off. I love this WOE and have been trying since 2003 to get to goal. So far have not been able to get successfully past induction.
I just want to get it right and get to maintenance.
I have two copies of DANDR and refer to it frequently.Age 56, height 5', highest weight 175 lbs. 2002

Re: Can't get 20 net carbs on induction
Do you mean that you have been on induction since 2003??I love this WOE and have been trying since 2003 to get to goal. So far have not been able to get successfully past induction.
Or do you mean you have been on and off Atkins, and only doing induction while on?Kate

Re: Can't get 20 net carbs on induction
Oh my! I havn't been on induction that long. I do induction for at least 2 weeks, sometimes stay on induction up to 4 weeks. Usually stall out at 3 weeks. I start adding more carbs then I just loose it and add too many carbs then it takes a long time to get focused again by then I have have gained most of the weight back and have to begin induction again. I have realized while reading this board that I have been doing the first rung wrong, adding berries and nuts before I should. Not loosing , just staying the same. I did get down to 140. Then too many carbs blew it and I blew back up to 159.Age 56, height 5', highest weight 175 lbs. 2002
