  • Am I Wrong To Do This????

I'm a stay at home mom with two small school age children. My husband is an over the road truck driver and is only home one day a week on the weekends.

Since I've been doing this diet, at night when I make dinner I've been omitting the 'starch' portion of a standard meal in our home. Mainly because I cannot eat it on this W.O.E. plus I don't want the extra dishes. Now during the day my kids eat Carbs. They eat ceral or toast and sandwiches, ect at lunch. Plus they get small nutritous snacks.

Am I wrong to skip the carbs during this one meal in the day? I'm sure if you were to ask my husband he would say yes. and when he is home I make that extra course but during the week why bother?

No, I don't think you are wrong. Since I began eating this way my son is eating WAY less carbs than he used to, no consiously really, it just happened. As a result is eating more veg and more meat than he ever did - basically at dinner he used to scoff the carbs and leave most of the rest, now he eats it all.

He still eats lots of fruit, way less juice, more full fat milk and yogurt, less cereal, more eggs, far more veg, fewer cookies and sweets. It isn't really dramatic and sort of happened naturally as there is just less carby food around. He is certainly not low-carbing - but he probably is moderate-carbing which has to be better for him than the high-carbing he did before!

Look at it this way. You make a nice dinner, with some meat, some veg and a side of chips. How would taking away the chips make it less healthy? Is there some magical property in them without which the meal is no longer nutritious? Of course not, and leaving them out will probably mean they will eat more of the good stuff.

I am sure it wont hurt them not to have starchy foods for one meal a day - especially if the food they are eating is wholesome 'fresh' food rather than overprocessed 'ready meals' .

And they will be learning about healthy eating too!

thanks you too... I was a little afraid I was neglecting my children somehow although now that I think of it... they do not eat vegetables at every meal. Why should I be concerned if they are missing carbs or starchy food at one meal. They should be eating more veggies!

Hi. I agree with the others. My husband is a trucker also and although he has never had a fat day in his life, he feels better and is healthier since he quit packing on so many carbs. They will crave less sweets, look better and feel more energetic as they learn. Hopefully your kids won't have to go through the misery of being overweight and learn the importance of exercise and making wiser food choices.

Nothing wrong with it as long as your children are willing to eat non-starchy veggies.

BTW, there is nothing "bad" about minimally processed, whole grains or starchy veggies. When you get to OWL, Pre-Maintenance and Maintenance Phases, you will be able to reintroduce foods like potatoes, corn, rice, grain products like pasta, legumes like kidney beans, etc. These foods are very healthful----as long as you don't eat the typically huge portions of them that many of us did.

Re: Am I Wrong To Do This????

This has been a really good post for me and I appreciate all the good support everyone has given me. My kids are willing to eat non=starchy veggies. especially if they are broccoli with cheese. Its theirs (and my husbands) favorite.

I also have to mention how appreciative I am to another post regarding seasonings and the sugar in them. I always checked the nutritional values but never the ingredients. These posts steer me in the direction to make better choices for food for my family and not be too concerned with traditional ideals about foods.
