  • Pre-Shreaded Cheese

I have been using pre shreaded (fancy shreaded) cheddar since being on atkins but I swore I read somewhere recently that you shouldnt have the pre-shreaded? Is this right or am I way off?

    Thanks

Most pre-shredded cheese have some sort of starch on them to keep them from sticking to one another. That starch would make it a no no

      Re: Pre-Shreaded Cheese

      Hi, Robert

Check the ingredients on the label... my bet is, that it will say something like "potato starch added to prevent caking".

When I first heard that there is usually some kind of starch in pre-shredded cheese, my first thought was "Surely not mine!". When I checked - yep, there it was. Needless to say, I grate my own now.

Plus it tastes a lot better to grate your own.

          Re: Pre-Shreaded Cheese

Well I've stopped losing weight for the past 3 days so I'm trying to evaluate everything that I eat. I know three days isn't anything to really worry about but it worries me

I KNOW my dressing isnt the best for me but it's so good LOL its the Bacon Ranch dressing.

Another question I had was about bacon. What kind of bacon is OK for me to eat? Nitrate or nitrite free (i always get confused!)

          Thanks

I've been so used to having a lower each morning before my shower! Now its hovering at around 344! Its crap because im SO close to my 30lb mark! LOL

Do you have any specific brands that are nitrate free?

              Thanks

Coleman puts out a nitrate free, as does Applegate. Applegate is also organic, and they put out a "really good" (accorning to DH) hotdog that's sugarfree. I'm not a hotdog eater, while DH has eaten every dog under the sun, so I'll take his word on it

I found ONE pack of bacon at Krogers that didnt have any nitrates but it was like $4 "Center Cut Uncured Bacon" - Naturally Preferred

I only eat two eggs for breakfast and I'm trying to find something to eat alongside it so I can up the fat content. I'm never hungry in the mornings but I eat beacuse I should :P

well if worse comes to worse, you can always make yourself some breakfast sausage.....that's always good 'n' fatty. Turnip "homefries" fried in oil? A side of panfried mushrooms? Top your eggs with cheese and guacamole?

How would cheese + mayo work? haha. I've done it since being on atkins and its actually not bad. About the sausage though.. what kind should I go out and buy?

                      Thanks

Robert....you need to learn to read labels....look for sausage without sugar. I get the feeling brand names vary too much by State for everyone to be helpful Around here, Jones puts out a sugar free....but...they also put out one with sugar....so read your labels! the ingredient list is your friend

                          Re: Pre-Shreaded Cheese

It just seems everytime that I assume something is OK to eat I eat it! Like the cheese for instance.. I thought shreaded was OK because thats all I ever knew.

I'm just wondering the TYPE that would be OK. There are sausage rolls and there are pre-cut.. im assuming just get a sausage roll that says no sugar or no -ose's. There are just so many variables i'm trying not to find yet ANOTHER product that will throw me off.

                          Thanks for the replies

Don't be discouraged. I've had many of the same issues. Thinking something was ok (like sugar-free cough drops), then finding hidden carbs. It's frustrating till you get used to it. Have you tried plotting your foods on www.fitday.com? It's helped me tremendously get a grip on my numbers. Best of luck to ya.

To make my own sausge, I have been using ground beef and mixing it ground pork, add a little pepper and salt, and put in thyme and sage. That all sasauge basically is, except for all the filler crap that is used (don't want to mention them because you will never eat sasauge again).

There is plenty of recipies you can find on the 'net. It might not taste exactly like Bob Evans but it is pretty good.
