  • Mayo during Induction

Hi Everyone! I started the Atkins plan on March 4th, 2008. I have lost a total of 7.2 pounds so far and I'm really excited about that BUT I have a couple of major questions.

    1. Can we have Mayo during Induction? For some reason I was under the impression that we could and I have been eating tuna with Mayo. I went to put it in my SparkPeople Nutritional counter and it said it was HIGH in Carbs. When I look at the bottle it says 0 CARBS.

    2. I wasn't aware that Jello was a NO NO and I have been eating it every night after dinner to get me through the "snacky" time of day. I have been eating it with Heavy Cream whipped and 2 tbsp. of Splenda. If I can't have the jello can I eat maybe 2 T. of whipped cream?

    3. I wasn't aware (because I hadn't read the message boards or read the book yet) that Splenda contained some carbs. I HATE water so I was using it to make lemonade with bottled lemon, water and then splenda to sweeten as well as using it in my coffee! Wow, wayyyy overboard!

I have been reading this board for about 2 hours now and I am so excited to see all of the progress as well as the weight loss. You are all AMAZING!

I'm going to add my ticker to my name so I can track my progress. I noticed that after Day 3 the carb cravings were completely gone and I had more energy than I had ever had!

    Thank you Dr. Atkins!

    Re: Mayo during Induction

First of all, CONGRATULATIONS ON LOSING THAT MUCH ALREADY!

You definitely need to read the book, though. You can get it really cheap brand new at amazon.com and click on "new and used for.." It is the 2002 version and I just got a new one of that version from elephantbooks for less than $10 including shipping.

Some mayo has sugar in it check the ingredients. I didn't find out mine had sugar until yesterday. Luckily, I don't even use it once a week. If you like making your own, there is a good recipe here http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard....e+mayo#post4184

If I were you, I would lose the jello. I found that when I stopped eating anything like that, I stopped craving sweets completely. I don't even use artificial sweeteners any more. It may be hard to give up at first but you will be better off in the long run. I failed on the diet last year because I would eat things like that which would trigger hunger and sweet craving. Now I am rarely hungry and have to make myself eat.

You can only have 3 splenda a day and they count as 1 carb apiece.

    Hmm, what else....

Here are some sugars you might find hidden in ingredients.

    sugar
    brown sugar

    sucrose
    fructose
    corn syrup
    glucose
    corn sugar
    dextrose
    lactose
    maltose
    honey
    invert sugar
    concentrated fruit juice
    sorbitol
    xyletol
    mannitol
    barley sugar
    malt extract
    malt
    monosodiumglutamate (MSG)
    high fructose
    corn syrup
    mollasses
    (Thanks Sherri for that list)

Thank you Thank you Thank you!

I figured out that I had to stop drinking water somewhere around 5:00 pm or I would be in the bathroom all night.

I have been really proud of myself since I haven't even been tempted to fall off and do something I wasn't suppose to.

Tonight we had Taco salad for dinner. Please tell me if this seems right. It worked well and it was great.

Hamburger with Chili powder and garlic powder
      Lettuce
      Tomato (very small amount)
      2 oz. of shredded cheese

Breakfast was two scrambled eggs as well as Pork Sausage from the farm. Not cured or seasoned at all except that I add pepper and garlic salt.

I am lucky because all of my meats come from the farm so I know exactly what is in them before I eat them!

I want to succeed and I know I will! I'm too determined not to!

I will certainly try knocking out all sugar!

      Michele

Can someone send me a link for the ticker??

You really need to have your veggies though, you are not getting enough veggies. Do you use fitday? www.fitday.com Your goal to shoot for in percentages should be 65% fat, 30% protein, and 5% carbs. You need the majority of your carbs to come from your veggies. I just saw a really good link about veggies and such, let me try to find it.

Does the lettuce and tomato not count or is it just not enough?

              Re: Mayo during Induction

Lettuce and tomato do count but when you need to get a few more good veggie carbs in, you might want to substitute something for the lettuce. I like cold jicama and half of it's carbs are from fiber.

I have so much to learn! I don't even know what cold Jicama is so I guess I better start doing some research!

Thank you for the Mayo recipe though! I love Mayo and this will really help!

AND I thought I was doing soooo well!

                  Re: Mayo during Induction

Okay I figured out where I got the fact that I thought I could eat Mayonnaise!

I found it in Dr. Atkins' New Personalized "WEIGHT LOSS FOR LIFE" SYSTEM. The Basic Diet Manual.

It also says that you can eat Diet Jello with Whipped Heavy Cream. This is a quick start guide to Induction.

Now do you understand my confusion? I knew I read it somewhere! I'm not crazy! LOL

                    Re: Mayo during Induction

That's why we go by the 2002 edition of DANDR because that is the last book he wrote before his death. It is best to be without any artificial sweeteners but he said 3 splenda a day were okay. I don't do anything like that now and since I stopped, my hunger is low and I don't crave sweets at all any more.

                        Re: Mayo during Induction

There is a lot to learn. That is why we are all here. I didn't even know my mayo had sugar in it until this week. I am starting a challege, the no sweets challenge and you can't even have any sweetener for 32 days. I can't even have the tri tip roast I had tonight becuase it is prepackaged and marinated and one of the ingredients is dextrose. Best thing for you to do, other than reading the book, is to read as much as you can on this board to learn. And if you have questions and can't find what you need using the search feature, be sure and ask questions! Also, if you have cheated or if you feel like cheating, you can post here and get support! If you mess up, don't leave, just come say you messed up and get back on the Atkin's horse!

As far as the veggies, this is what I did. I looked at the induction veggies and I made two lists from each section. Out of both the salad veggie list and the other veggie list, I wrote down all the veggies I knew I liked and then I wrote down a list of which veggies I would like to try. I put them on notecards on my fridge so I wouldn't mix up which was salad veggies and which was other veggies. Pumpkin is a bit odd at first but I am really beginning to enjoy the taste of real foods now without all the flavorings.
