  • Gained a Pound!

Okay, I have really been patting myself on the back. I haven't cheated in the 12 days that I have been in induction. I haven't even wanted to cheat. I screwed up in the beginning and ate some things I wasn't suppose to accidently because I wasn't reading the 2002 book but I immediately fixed it and was fine.

I have gained a pound. For the past two days I was completely stalled but I figured it was alright. I had a hysterectomy two years ago so I don't have a menstrual cycle anymore. I know that it must be around that time of the month because I still get some of the other "symptoms." I don't have the cramps like I used to but my chest still gets sore so I know it's around the time that I typically would have my period.

Please help or some words of encouragement! I really haven't cheated! In fact I even cooked my son some fettucini with cream sauce last night and didn't touch it!

    HELP!

    Re: Gained a Pound!

We'd love to help, but we need something to work with.

What about posting your menu so that someone can check if there's anything "fishy" on it? There might be hidden sugars or other illegal ingredients you are not aware of.

Also, how much do you have to lose? Are you eating veggies, drinking a lot of water, exercising, etc.?

Post your menu and hang in there. We all did little mistakes when starting Atkins (and even after months of doing it ), but they can be fixed on the way... and then you start melting!

It's completely normal for weight to go up and down, even on induction. I've been on plan for six months now and it happens to me all the time. As long as I know I am eating legally I don't worry about it because the trend is always downward.

Post you're menu and we'll look for any red flags but the best thing to do it complete your 14 days of a clean induction and weigh at the end. Then move onto OWL.

        Re: Gained a Pound!

        Yesterday my menu was:

        Breakfast:

Two fried eggs (fried in butter)
2 cups of caffienated coffee with Heavy Cream (no sweetner at all)

        Lunch:

1C tuna wrapped in a piece of lettuce

        Dinner:

6 oz of Salmon basted in butter an lemon juice
        2 cups of broccoli

Drank 64 oz. of water throughout the day.

The veggies are confusing for me. I am limited on what I like and only like broccoli, cauliflower, lettuce, tomato. I will try new things once I get comfortable with this diet and comfortable with how to cook things.

Any help is appreciated. I have already decided that since I'm not having any real issues with the eating habits that I'm going to stay on Induction indefinitely. I love the new way of eating and decided that I didn't even need the Splenda and that I can do without the sugars.

I'm also exercising every night. I am walking two miles on the treadmill and doing 10 to 15 on the elliptical.

          Re: Gained a Pound!

The same thing happened to me...I had been stalled at 137 for 3 days and then gained a pound the next day. Now I'm back to 137. I guess it's just due to hidden carbs. I eat out a lot because I don't have time to cook every meal, but I try to ask as many questions as possible to make sure I'm not eating any of the bad stuff. It's so frustrating! This weight stall has made me especially cranky since I have been sacrificing all my favorite foods...my poor boyfriend has to deal with it

I was actually really excited that I had decided to do something about my weight and was even more excited when I started seeing the pounds coming off. BUT now that I stalled I'm crabby and want to eat! I have done well and haven't gone off plan and don't intend to since I know I'm an emotional eater but I want my "Prom Queen" body back!

I cook all my meals because I own my own company and work from home so I'm extremely lucky in that respect but HOW FRUSTRATING!!!!!

              Michelea,
Have you tried logging your menu into fitday? I am thinking you are not eating enough. And perhaps not enough fat. No majo with the tuna? Fitday is very helpful to me - keeps me on the tight and narrow.
              You don't eat meat?
Keep trying veggies. There are so many out there and so many ways to prepare them - you may surprise yourself. And I think that once we get out of all the carby/sugar stuff we change our tastes somewhat. So you never know. Check out the recipe section and get creative.

going by the rules, you are short of possibly 1.5 cups of the 'salad veg' list (depending on how big the piece of lettuce was) and over by one cup of the 'other veg' list.
Take a look at all the veg on the first list - it includes mushrooms, peppers, celery, radish, daikon, jicama and others as well as lettuce. If you are not keen on salads they try them cooked - red peppers sautéd in butter make a good sauce for meats, celery braised in butter or oils is a tasty side dish, radishes can be boiled to take the bitterness and red colour out of them and used instead of potatoes in many dishes, jicama can be eaten raw like an apple or pear (with some fat to keep blood sugar spikes at bay), etc, etc

I have already decided that since I'm not having any real issues with the eating habits that I'm going to stay on Induction indefinitely. I love the new way of eating and decided that I didn't even need the Splenda and that I can do without the sugars.
I am glad you are not finding induction too daunting - but you need to move on after your first 2 weeks in order to have time to climb the OWL carbohydrate ladder and then move to the third phase of Atkins (premaintenance) by the time you have about 5 pounds left to lose as instructed by Dr Atkins in DANDR.

I'm also exercising every night. I am walking two miles on the treadmill and doing 10 to 15 on the elliptical.
                good for you

                Keep up the good work!

Weigh after your 14th day to see how much weight in total you have lost over the 2 weeks then look at the chart in DANDr to see how metabolically resistant to weightloss you are in order to plan your Atkins journey towards your goal
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

                  Re: Gained a Pound!

I highly recommend not staying on induction indefinitley. Induction is not designed to be a lifelong eating plan. Dr. Atkin's intended for us to do induction to detox and get into ketosis and then learn to eat for life by doing OWL, Pre-Maintainance and Maintainance. The first time around I stayed in induction for 6 months, lost 40 pounds but gained it all back plus more because no one can be satisifed eating induction foods forever.

This time around I am six months in, have lost almost 40 pounds again and am working my was through OWL. I can say without a doubt I eat better this time around and enjoy adding foods back into my diet. And I know that by doing Atkins the way the Dr. intended I will not be losing the weight for a third time.

                    Re: Gained a Pound!

I cannot weigh every day because when I do and I see it going up, I freak out. I am getting better at it but it still bothers me even though I know it is normal. There was a guy here who weighed every day and wrote down his weights. Some days he lost, some days he gained and some days he stayed the same. Your body is kinda in a "What's going on??" stage and is trying to adjust to the fluctuations. Plus, the weight change you are seeing may not even be due to fat but to other factors such as fluid. This post may help you. Also, I need to look up in your DANDR the definition of a "stall" it involves weeks, not days. http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...ead.php?t=6737

                    Hope this helps. Good luck.

I forgot to finish my train of thought about the guy who weighed every day. Anyway, even though his weight fluctuated, he always lost more and when he graphed it, you could see a downward trend.

                        Re: Gained a Pound!

You guys are so helpful! For some reason even when I read the stuff about the veggies I just can't get my mind around it. I LOVE Mushrooms and I cook them in butter and then put them on the meats.

I looked at the Garlic Salt I have been using and found SUGAR in it! UGH! It's okay because I will get to the point where I read every label! I'm a garlic freak and put that salt on everything so now I know!

I can still do my one cup of Broccoli or Cauliflower with dinner though right??

I didn't do the Mayo today because I worked all day (and I'm still working) so I didn't take the time to make it or have all of the ingredients.

I love Tuna Fish so I could eat it every single day of the week! I just need to make some Mayo to go with it!

Since I messed up on Induction can't I just continue for two more weeks to try and get it right? I'm so fearful of moving on and screwing something else up.

I do like salads but I don't put normal things in my salad. I like

                        Lettuce
                        Bacon
                        Cooked Mushrooms
                        Tomatoes
                        Onions

When I eat a salad of the things above (minus the onion) how much can I have?

                        See....the veggies confuse me.

Thank you so much for the help! I really am trying to be good!

                          Re: Gained a Pound!

If you feel happier to continue with induction for another couple of weeks it shouldn't do you any harm

Your salad could consist of 2 cups of a mixture of lettuce and mushrooms (for induction they need to be measured raw btw as does any other veg that 'cooks down' to a smaller volume) but if you are also eating one cup of broc or cauli at another meal then you shouldn't have tomatoes or onion with it as they are veggeis on the 'other list' which includes broc/cauli.

But when you do decide to move to OWL you could add another 5 net carbs of broccolli or tomatoes or onions, ya know!!

This is one big reason lots of us like to move to at least the veg rung of OWL - we can eat more veg and still lose weight.

They don't call it the 'Ongoing weight loss' phase of Atkins for nothing!

You can have 2 to 3 cups of veg's from the first list and if you only have 2 cups from the first list then you can have 1 cup a day from the second list. Broccoli is on the second list and you should only be eating 1 cup a day. You listed 2, it seems crazy that that little thing would make you gain but if you have a hard time losing maybe that little bit is enough to put you over the top. Good luck and keep trying.
