  • Day 5 and a new bike too!

    Hey everyone,
So far so good on a clean induction. I weighed in this morning after 4 full days and nights of Atkins and am 5 lbs down so far. I know that speed won't last, but I'm happy with whatever I get since I know this is good for my overall health.

I wasn't getting any exercise at all before I started, and have started that along with this WOE. Tuesday was an hour on the treadmill, just walking mind you, but it's a start. Then this morning I went to a local bike shop and purchased a Trek 5000 bicycle and did a 10 mile ride with some pretty good hills this afternoon. I really wanted to do the bike thing because it's basically no impact on the joints. And, I've wanted a really good road bike for a couple of years. The desire to shed the excess weight and inches motivated me to go ahead and spend the bucks on it.

Last night was my first real test of eating out on induction, and I think I did pretty well. I already had tickets to a wildlife banquet prior to committing myself to Atkins, and they were kinda expensive, so I didn't want to miss it. For dinner I had a nice slab of prime rib, with all of the fat, green beans, and a small salad with ranch dressing. That was all good... the not so good is that I did have a couple of drinks. I did as well as I could by having rum and diet coke, so even though I know I shouldn't be drinking during induction I did limit the damage I think.

Here's wishing everyone a successful induction and a successful Atkins journey!!!

    Good for YOU!!!!!

I wish I had rewarded myself with a bicycle earlier in my Atkins, because biking is easier on the knees, hips and ankles than running/jogging and more strenuous than walking.

PLUS, bikes can be used as a car alternative for short distance errands (save gas money WHILE burning your body fat---what can be more economical than that????)

      Yeah Rich. Good job.
I envy you your bike. I should get a nice one. I love to bike to and hope to really do lots of it this spring and summer.

When I get tempted to drive (or take the elevator) - I try to tell myself that I have consumed enough energy and probably have some to burn.

Thank you both for the replies!

I'm really happy about the bike. It's something I've wanted for a long time and decided that if I really wanted to get serious about this WOL then I should do it right. I am totally committed to this, which is the reason for my username here.

Megs, you are exactly right. And, my job is only about 3 miles, so I hope to start riding the bike to work and back soon. The only problem is that I live on a huge hill and that last ride up the hill coming home is almost impossible. I guess when it gets too rough I could get off and walk... that's a thought. But, I am extremely happy that I committed myself to this and I know the bike will help.

Looking forward to some success stories of my own soon.

That sounds like a plan: if the hill is too tough right now, get off the bike and walk it. As you get stronger and fitter, that hill won't be as tough and you'll be able to bike it.

Also, you might want to invest in a cycle trainer. It's a gizmo that will convert your road bike into a stationary bike for winter/bad weather exercise. So not only do you have an alternate source of transportation, you'll also have a piece of indoor gym equipment.

Yep, I know exactly what you're talking about. When I was at the bike shop they actually fitted me to the bike and got it setup with one of those trainers. I have been looking on ebay for a decent buy one one of those.

The hill. It's funny, but I grew up on this hill, and with kids bikes... and I used to ride them all of the time. When I was a boy I got to the point where I could ride up the hill all of the way on a single speed bike. That was a lot of years and quite a few pounds ago... lol! I'm now a 51 year old guy and only wish I had that energy that I had as a teenager. I'll get there.

I know that exercise is not an option, and that I feel better when I do it. One of my goals is to do a 100 mile day on a bike... that's not here right now, but maybe by the end of the summer. I think I'm a realist, and have realistic goals.

            Thanks again for the reply.

                bythree,
I'm not new to this, and I know that an exercise plan is important to success. I've done atkins before, but didn't realize that it is a way of life, not just a diet. I know that now because I have added on pounds that I took off before.

That being said, I do have a plan now, and I will live by it. Good nutrition and exercise will hopefully extend my life and in a way that I feel healthy. I think that you have to totally commit yourself to a healthy lifestyle in order to have a healthy life, and I am doing this now. I've failed on atkins before because I thought it was a diet, not a lifestyle... Now, I know better.

                    You're certainly welcome!

I did order a resistance trainer this morning and it should be here later in the week. It's a good thing too since our weather has been crap the last 2 days and the forecast doesn't look much better.

Guess I'll just have to do the treadmill (not my favorite thing) until it comes in.
