  • Inductions And Splenda???

    Hello,
My name is Nikkki and I am on day two or what I believe is my version of induction.
I have had no carbs from starches, real surgars, or pasta in the last two days and I am really not craving them yet and I am totally shocked!

However, I have used at least 8 lil packets of splenda today with my coffee and then with me tea.

Is this going to sabotage my induction? Do I have to give up caffiene and splenda?
Coffee is what took my appetite away, least I think , yesterday and it is what I have every morning.

I am very heavy overeater, diabetic and am contantly hungry from poor dietary choices, not much of a cooker.

Here is an example of what I ate. Am I on the right track
    coffee
then hour later 3 eggs fried ketchup on the eggs, beef sausage water
    hot tea with splenda
snack- slices of turkey deli sliced two and one slice of cheese
glass of diet coke no caff.
    water
lunch-turkey burgers 2 seasoned with sazon ' two slices of cheese and ketchup
    Haven't had dinner yet.
Is this sort of the right thing to do.
Ketchup and splenda bad for induction?
I know easily in a day I could consume 3,500 really from bad serving sizes, so this is a change for me.

    HAve the headache.
I had the test today, taking my daughter into dunkin donuts and frantic because there was nothing for me to eat, so I bought a tea.
    Thanks,
    Nikkki

    Re: Inductions And Splenda???

You make it hard to answer your questions, since it is your version. What you are doing is not Atkins, it's Nikkkiins. You are not allowed regular ketchup ever. It contains high fructose corn syrup (really evil, nasty stuff) and regular corn syrup. It has 4 grams of carbs for one tablespoon, a very small amount. Heinz makes a One Carb ketchup, sweetened with Splenda with 1 gram of carbs for one tablespoon. You still have to be careful because of the natural sugars in tomatoes.

Now to the Splenda and artificial sweeteners: you are allowed to have Splenda, but you can only have three servings per day. You also have to count each packet as a carb. Splenda has carbs because of the bulking agents. That would include all Splenda sweetened everything, like the low carb ketchup. Coke is sweetened with equal, which you should not have. Even Splenda sweetened soft drinks have to be counted, and if you read the label, there's more than a serving per bottle or can.

It is recommended that you give up caffeine, at least for the 14 days of induction. Caffeine can spike blood sugar then drop it back down to low, which causes you to crave. Since you are diabetic, I suggest you follow Induction to the letter and switch to decaf.

Where are your veggies?? You are to have 3 cups of salad veggies or 2 cups of salad veggies and 1 cup from the "other veggie" list. You should use low carb, full fat dressing on your salads. Most of your 20 grams of carbs should come from veggies, with the rest coming from cheese, cream and the Splenda, if you use it. How much water are you drinking? There is a limit to how much cheese you can have per day--3 to 4 ounces of hard, aged cheese per day.

Do yourself a favor and get the book and read it. There is no way to understand and do this properly without having the book by your hand all the time. I dare say that there is not one successful, long-term loser on here that has not read the book more than once. Why waste 14 days doing induction wrong when you could be doing it right, losing pounds, getting past the cravings and breaking bad habits?

    Sunny!

People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.

      Re: Inductions And Splenda???

      Hello Nikki,
First of all, welcome to atkins and ADBB!
I personally don't eat any type of sweetners anymore. I too am a Type-2 Diabetic and control it with this WOE alone. By following all the rules in DANDR 2002 Edition (which is the book we all follow here), I was able to reverse my Type- 2 Diabetes in 48 days. No longer requiring to take two types of meds. This can happen for you as well. Do you have DANDR 2002? If not, find one soon. It will help guide you on your Atkins weightloss journey and a healthier you. That way you'll know what you're allowed and what you're not allowed to eat.
Sweetners can be stallers in your weightloss as well as caffeine. It's not a good idea for Diabetics to get to much caffeine intake. It will whack out your glucose levels, spike and drop too quickly which will leave you with too low glucose levels (hypoglycemia) and leave you ravenous. If you can try to ween yourself off the caffeine, your glucose levels will thank you for it.
We should be getting most of our carb intake from veggies. Also, you can go to www.fitday.com to keep track of food intake and your ratios of 65% fat, 30% protein, 5% Carbs for your Induction Phase. Also, it's important to subtract your fiber to get your net carb count. You'll learn all about this in the book. Or untill then you can go to the Induction thread at- http://www.atkinsdietbulletinboard.c...splay.php?f=73 and read all the stickies on top to get more familiar with Induction Phase. Okay?
Good girl passing up the donuts, Proud of you! Hey, you can take L-glutamine to fight the sweet cravings. It totally works. If you're interested in it I can give you more info on that.
Hang in there Nikki. Once you get the knowlege of how this all works. It will get easier for you.
      Sincerely, Sherri

        Re: Inductions And Splenda???

Thanks for all the info. I have no idea what d?rr 2002 is.. lol
but i will find out now. Please send any info on cravings and how to get rid of them. Funny thing is I have started to gain weight since I started drinking coffee and going through tons of splenda.

I thought I was doing something good, I just threw a warm brownie from my tv dinner in the trash. was heating up the mac and cheese for her lunch tomorrow, didn't touch it or the brownie, i just ate the string beans.
my parents bought over mickey d's for the girls tonight... i didn't eat the french fries for the first time in my life !
How did I give up these things in these last two days , I have no will power, have never gone two days without cake, cookies, carbs pasta, comfort food, but now I don't have a taste for it.
Could you please send me what info you have about cutting cravings because I am so sure if I stop the coffee and carbs at same time, I'll darn near shut down!

          Re: Inductions And Splenda???

Wow ! i had no idea of the evils of splenda. no wonder i have gained 5 or 6 lbs since i started being a coffee freak? Is there any way to make a latte not so bad for me lol ?
seriously, thank you fot the info. I am going to get the book, don't have it, so I thought because I have not had a craving in two days, my cutting back on the carbs was the cause of this. The carbs i did have were from splenda and
ketchup. The ketchup I can do away with no problem.
I am going to print all of this out and change my nikkkiins to atkins.
Veggies, gotta get some . Im going to have to change alot, I have been eating outside for two days straight, and it was easiest to find meat or eggs out on the run. I see I'm going to have to make small dishes and pack them with me.
But Sunny, my daughter had pizza and a garlic knot sat right on her plate and I didn't eat the crust or touch the knot, didn't eat any of the fries someone bought over . This is yet a break through for me! I hope I can keep it up and fix the stuff I was incorrect about asap!
          Thanks so much !

            Re: Inductions And Splenda???

Im going to assume those lattes of yours have milk in them. You cannot have milk.

In fact, you cannot do anything until you understand the diet. Untill you buy the book, go and read all the stick threads on the forums that explain the foods you're allowed, and the quantity.

Did you eat the bun with your burger?

I understand you're use to seeing yourself as someone without self control. You seem to accept this as 'who you are'. These self deprecating projections are a sure way to fail on any diet. You need to sit down and have good talking to yourself where you asses why you are the weight you are, think about what weight you want to be, come to terms with the fact that to be that weight EVERYTHING needs to change and THEN go for it.

The point is that you have to not WANT to eat the bad foods. If you 'crave' them and want them, then you dont want to lose bad enough! You need to want want want it, and if that means no more crap foods, then you dont want them!!!!!!

Also, if you dont want to crave ANYTHING force yourself to have no coffee, no splenda and nothing with sweetner in it. It will suck, but do it for a few days (force yourself) and by the third day you wont even crave those things anymore (or anything else).

Try and eat a plan similar to this until you read the book:
            Breakfast
2 or 3 eggs, cooked in butter (if scrambled dont add milk)
            few bits of bacon.

snack: nothing (youve just had a high protein brekky!!)

            Lunch
Can of tuna or piece of chicken (any meat that isnt crumbed or battered or carby)
2 cups of salad veggies (bell peppers and cucumber or celery or lettuce etc)

            snack
piece of cheese, no bigger than your finger

            Dinner
piece of lean meat (sometime its easy to buy a roast chicken from the store)
1 cup of broccoli or zuccini or cauliflower
mayonnaise (with low sugar content, check the lable)

AND DRINK AT LEAST 10 BIG GLASSES OF WATER THROUGHOUT THE DAY

this is just a guide.... but its the kind of thing you should be eating.

do not eat sausages, they're full of bread crumbs and flower whcih is a big no no.

learn to cook some simple meals that are inductipn friendly, you and your family will love them and you will all benefit.

remove junk food from your home. its just going to tempt you and its bad for you (and your family) to eat anyway. thats a no brainer

you need to focus on eating fresh good quality foods.

go to this website and look through the recipes. many are VERY easy. all the ones with a * next to them are safe for induction

You need to focus and you need to commit! You ALSO need to exercise. Start walking ever day, even if its only for 20 minutes.

            GOOD LUCK!!!

                Re: Inductions And Splenda???

Dr. Atkins talks about ketchup (it's a no-no, due to HFCS) and having too many luncheon meats, sausage and bacon. He speaks of clean eating and of the best quality you can afford and organic if at all possible. Lunch meat and bacon contain nitrates which are known carcinogens. Try to find some that don't contain this preservative or limit your intake. If you ingest 8 packets of Splenda a day it takes away from your carb count by 8 grams of carbohydrates. I don't know about you but I'd much rather eat food that contains 8 carbs than drink it. If you are using 8 packets of Splenda a day and you're allotted 20 grams a day...that means you only have 12 grams to actually eat with. Not a lot. Get the book and read, you'll understand this so much better.

Can't wait to hear more from you!

                  Hi Nikki

You have been given some great advice already so all i will add is:
                  Welcome to our ADBB family

You have made a good start already by managing to avoid those sweet 'treats', and I am sure that once you have read up on the rules of Induciton and added your veggies you will become a big loser
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Check out our Low Carb Recipes website and add to it!!

I don't have much to add since the posters above me have done a WONDERFUL job explaining things.

I will say that FOR ME, and for some other people, having any Splenda will absolutely tank/stall any weight loss. I can't come NEAR the stuff without stalling for that day. Even if I have 1 single packet in a cup of coffee, I'm will not lose an ounce that day. Others on the forums could sprinkle Splenda on everything they ate and still lose. It's highly variable between individuals. Just an FYI to you and anyone who might be reading this thread and wondering.

And don't forget the fat in that menu. Fat with also fill you up and keep you satisfied. Butter, Olive oil, full fat salad dressing. And for goodness sake, eat when you're hungry.

Let's see. I haven't had any bread , so when I said I had a burger, it was without the bread. Hubby gave me a turkey burget last night, no cheese, and handed it to me with the bread and out of habit, I was about to take a bite, then I looked at it again and took the burger out.
This week I haven't had any lattes. I have pizza right in front of my face this week, fruit, bread, garlic knots, etc.. haven't touched a bit of it .
I did not drink coffee yesterday morning on purpose, but by afternoon, I did have a cup.

so right now, coffee, splenda and ketchup are the things I have to stop.
What can I replace coffee with? I'm pretty okay with plain hot tea?
                        Decaf tea, plain okay???

Thanks for the menu ideas . I am going to try them out. Thanks for all the advice.

                          Welcome to our ADBB family

You have made a good start already by managing to avoid those sweet 'treats', and I am sure that once you have read up on the rules of Induciton and added your veggies you will become a big loser

Wow ! Splenda is the devil! Shoot! Okay I guess I better learn to drink decaf with no splenda and maybe it will taste nasty and I will give it up altogether.
Maybe I can drink hot water wiht lemon in the morning and pretend it is coffee.
                            lolol

I will say that FOR ME, and for some other people, having any Splenda will absolutely tank/stall any weight loss. I can't come NEAR the stuff without stalling for that day. Even if I have 1 single packet in a cup of coffee, I'm will not lose an ounce that day. Others on the forums could sprinkle Splenda on everything they ate and still lose. It's highly variable between individuals. Just an FYI to you and anyone who might be reading this thread and wondering.

If you drink decaf for a few days with no sweetener, you will learn to like it. Everything you eat or drink is according to how it was introduced to you as you were growing up. If you had grown up on Fiji a century ago, you would have thought eating your neighbor was the best holiday meal. I have learned that I can change my tastes with only a little effort since starting Atkins.
People who say it can't be done, should not interrupt those doing it.
