  • Martini??

Third day of diet. Have done great. But, had a vodka martini last night. Will this totally throw me off?

I don't think alcohol is allowed until the 5th rung, but I doubt 1 vodka martini will throw you off. If it had a drink mix that had sugar or hidden carbs in it, it could set you back though.

Alcohol isn't permitted on induction and I'm not sure exactly when it is allowed. Your body is burning alcohol now instead of fat. That to me is enough to skip out on any drink.

            Re: Martini??

Nichole is right, while there may not be an obscene amount of carbs in some alcohols, your body is no longer in fat burning mode. Your body will not reenter fat burning mode until all of the alcohol is burned off thus slowing your weight loss down tremendously.

We also discourage drinking before the alcohol rung because we tend not to make the best food choices while we're slightly intoxicated. If you drink enough you could end up eating a ton of carb laden snack foods and not remember it the next day.

And, of course, alcohol is not on the induction menu or in any of the introductory rungs of OWL so adding it in means you're not following the Atkins plan. It really is best to stick with the way the plan is written as that is the only way you'll experience long lasting success.

            All the best,

              Re: Martini??

Well from what I have read vodka does not have carbs in it, but for example I love CHOCOLATE martinis and of course we all know what CHOCOLATE is. So I guess it would depend on exactly what type of martini you are talking about. Same with lemon drop or appletini. They are definatley no goes on atkins!

Your body will burn off the alcohol first and then switch back after it's done. I think one drink= no harm, no foul. I wouldn't make a habit of it though.

                  Re: Martini??

Dr. Atkins left alcohol off the Induction menu for the very reasons others have posted: your body will use up the alcohol first, slowing down your fat burning ability. Moreover, while your body is burning off that fat, it is busy converting the fats, carbs and proteins you have eaten into their storage form---fat.

So if you do choose to veer off the plan, be aware of this, especially if you don't lose your weight as you have expected to lose it.
