  • Help! Calculating net carbs.

    Hello all,

Could someone please clear this up for me?

My mum has also just started the atkins again and said that she read that you only have to count the carbs which come from sugar? And when we were doing it the first time we used to minus the fiber from the total carbs. I am sure that i read somewhere that it only in America where you have to minus anything???

So in the uk how do you know the net carbs???

Thanks in advance for your help!

    Re: Help! Calculating net carbs.

For packaged goods (packaged vegetables, etc.) you don't have to subtract the fiber, because in the UK the fiber is already subtracted and the listed carbohydrate is essentially the "net carbs". However if you buy a bunch of radishes from the grocer, you will need to look up the nutritional information and subtract the fiber to obtain the net carb.

I don't know where your mum read that you only have to count carbs from sugar, but that is totally false!! Once carbs are digested, your body doesn't know where they come from. They all get treated the same -converted to fat. She may be confusing carbs with glycemic index, where sugar gets digested very fast and raises blood sugar, possibly causing an insulin spike.
