  • Done with Induction

I've lost 16 pounds in the past 2 weeks! I initially set out to lose 41 lbs, so I am very happy with this.

I am getting so bored with Induction as well that I am ready to add a few more veggies into my day. I know OWL 1 doesn't allow for a LOT more veggies, but it's just nice to know that I have a little extra room for them. Yea!
    It's now or never.

Congratulations on making it through induction and losing so much. You've done great. I agree that moving up the rungs (albeit slowly) is great. Enjoy your extra vegetables (I had "french fry" rutabega yesterday - new experience. And although it was not quite french fry - I liked that way of eating rutabega.

OWL Rung 1 allows for 5 net carbs of any Induction veggie in addition to the 3 cups of veggies you are already eating. Depending on the vegetable those 5 net carbs can be 15 cups (as in the case of lettuce) or 1 1/2 cups (as in the case of Swiss Chard). In fact, one of the biggest complaints new OWLers have is that the large volume of vegetables they must eat!

A big congratulations for completeing induction!

I'm also moving on to the first rung today, and in order to reduce the bulk of the vegetables, I'm going to add things like no sugar tomato sauce (1/4 cup 4 carbs), and V8 vegetable juice (8 oz 10 carbs). On the day that I have V8, I can have just one cup of tossed salad and 1 cup (measured raw) of cooked vegetables and I'm at 20 carbs of vegetables!

I make chicken parmesan by coating the chicken with butter and rolling in parmesan cheese and then baking it. It's fantastic and my fella likes it better than regular fried chicken. Now I can take that 1/4 cup tomato sauce and put it over the chicken with a slice of provolone and broil, and I've got a very delicious and enjoyable way of eating that vegetable. 5 carbs for the chicken parmesan!

                This feels great!

Be careful when you added vegetable juices because they don't have fiber. Fiber, like fat, slows the digestion of the natural sugars. Also remember that you only add 5 net carbs of OWL foods.

                    Re: Done with Induction

Make your own veggie juices. I like to throw celery, snow peas, parsley, cucumber, spinach, some fresh ginger & a little lemon juice in the blender with water. That way you get the fiber, and no added sodium. You can mix it up however you like. (it's great with half an apple if you can have that).

OK in that case I ate turnip. (I ate the white one, not the yellow one. The white one is the one we are allowed, yes?) We seem to label this different in Canada - It is all too confusing

                        Re: Done with Induction

I can't have the apple yet, but thanks for the suggestion. I'm a farmer, so I might try making my own this year.

Not2late, I'm having 'problems' with all the fiber I'm eating right now. That's why I thought that adding 8 oz of V8 (at 10 carbs) and then having 10 carbs of induction vegetables, might help that situation, and still give me 4 vegetable servings per day, and still be in the 20 carbs of vegetables.

Intestinally speaking, I appear to have the opposite problem that many have when starting Atkins.

                          Re: Done with Induction

Doesn't V8 contain carrot and beetroot juices? If so then it would not be 'legal' till the 8th rung of OWL.

                          Edited to add
I googled for the ingredients and see it does.

Here is an interesting argument against drinking it from a company that sells juicing machines BTW but seems logical to me. http://www.ezhealthydiet.com/v8-juice.html
Nothing, and I mean nothing, can replace the fresh, nutritious enzyme rich juice you get from juicing carrots and other vegetables in your juicer. V8 is a concoction made from processed (heated) juice concentrate or reconstituted vegetable juice with added salt (why does Campbell's add salt?) and "natural flavorings." Natural flavorings are nothing more than repackaged MSG.
Here are the ingredients of a can of V8 Juice straight from the label:

Tomato Juice from Concentrate (Water, Tomato Paste), Reconstituted Vegetable Juice Blend (Water and Concentrated Juices of Carrots, Celery, Beets, Parsley, Lettuce, Watercress, Spinach), Lemon Juice from Concentrate (Water, Lemon Juice Concentrate), Salt, Natural Flavoring, Vitamin C (Ascorbic Acid), Citric Acid.

There isn't any packaged juice that will replace fresh natural juice straight from a mix of carrots, apples, celery and whatever else you choose to mix in your juicing beverage. Once juice is cooked above 118 degrees F or processed, as it is in Campbell's V8, the life giving nutritious enzymes are destroyed.

You are correct about the beet and carrot too. I had forgotten they were in V8.

I'll give it up. I sure don't wanna mess up at this point.

Apart from the no-no ingredients in V8, Dr Atkins did advise against drinking our veggies
Don't drink your vegetables. Juicing removes the fiber, which has the double merit of helping you feel full and maintaining a healthy digestive system. Juices also concentrate the sugars from vegetables, increasing the risk that they'll spike your blood sugar.
The fact that you are experiencing the opposite of constipation does not necessarily (sp?) mean you should be eating less fibre as far as I know. Maybe someone with more knowledge on this can chime in here??
