  • Addicted to Sweets? The Cephalic Phase Insulin Response

For some folks artificial sweeteners and regular sugar can trigger something called the "cephalic phase insulin response". Basically, the sweet taste alone will cause you to release insulin. The insulin will grab any bit of sugar you might have floating around in your blood. When you blood sugar dips below a certain point, it triggers your brain to feel hunger or cravings.

This is results in a vicious cycle: the more you eat or drink of the artificial sweetener the more insulin you'll release so the hungrier you'll feel and the more you'll want/need to eat. That's why some people can't stop drinking can after can of diet soda: satisfying their sweet tooth only makes them want more. This can happen with any artificial sweetener.

This is why the ADBB moderators and old-timers strongly advise everyone to kill that sweet tooth during Induction. Starve that sweet tooth and you'll be in control of the food, rather than the food be in control of you.

    Sugar

It makes me so mad that I never knew that all that "lowfat" food they were just replacing the fat with sugar! I was having horrible diarehea, gas and bloating and went to a gastroentrologist and had all sorts of test. As soon as I got all the sugar out of my diet, the diarehea went away!

:yes I am so glad other proof validates what I felt to be true for me. I am one of those people who CANNOT have the fake or real deal of sugar which was my carb of choice and I'm finding that its easier for me to resist because I truly indulged in candies and gum like it was breakfast, lunch or dinner.

Hi there all you adbb's . I am determined to make this work. It may take a few times getting it exactly right, but it will happen. I am encouraged by EVERY SINGLE BODY on this board! I need a little knowledge real quick- are the low carb bars (Net Carbs-2) okay during induction? I can't seem to find the answer anywhere. Thank you so much. Flo

I have to say I have fallen in this trap with sugar free candies and I am starting to release myself from it today no more sugar free candies for me 4ever.
I used to binge on regular candy I stopped at 7-11 a million times a day!
Now I go to walgreens instead I am stopping the insanity I realize I can not handle this. *Evil candy people*

Wow, I can totally relate. I am so addicted to splenda in my coffee, then diet coke with dinner, sugar free butter pecan ice cream for a snack, sugar free gum, etc. I thought it was better to have when I was craving pizza and I guess it still is, but addiction is addiction and today is day 1 in breaking it.

Re: Addicted to Sweets? The Cephalic Phase Insulin Response

I was a total Diet Coke addict. I had to have it EVERY day and lots of it. My kids even started lecturing me on the amount I drank, telling me how it couldn't be good for me. I just poo pooed them away. One was never enough, and I figured if I was going to diet (on the various dozen's I've tried) and be deprived of the food I wanted, then I deserved lots of sugar free soda. I switched to iced tea and now I'm trying to limit that to one glass a day. I do miss the sweet taste. I hope to stop missing it soon!

Does the artificial sweetner has this affect on everyone? I crave sweets sometimes, but not necessarily after already eating something sweet. I do chew sugar free gum and have about 1 diet soda per day. Is this possiby hindering my weight loss? Bummer!
