try to avoid sugar as much as possible, even those small quantities of sugar in the foods you eat. try not to eat them, especially during induction.

You should be checking ingredietns lists for added sugars, in some foods there will be naturally occuring sugars (this may be the case for dressings) if a food has added sugar it will be listed under the ingredients, it can also be called sucrose, high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup etc.

This post would be better suited in the Induction forum, I will see if i can get it moved for you.

Strictly speaking we should be avoiding all foods with added sugar (in the ingredients list) which would rule out some dressings like ranch which might be made with sugar.

In USA there are several brands made without sugar or you could make your own instead to be doubly sure.

Just a different perspective for you in regard to the Ranch and sugar issue. My understanding has always been that the amount of sugar in Ranch dressing is so minimal that it is a bit of an exception as far as no-sugar goes. I'm not a huge fan of too many salad dressings other that Ranch and I happily ate Ranch during Induction and lost a wonderful 15 pounds in 14days. I whole heartedly agree that you do need to read every label of everything prior to it going into your mouth. I just checked my Atkins book and on my page 127 "Away you go: The Induction Phase" it does read:
"Prepared salad dressings without added sugar and no more than two carbs per tablespoon serving are also fine" at the end of the paragraph.
I wish you the best. I believe you want to make sure you don't have any accidental slip ups but I'd like to offer you a word of comfort that having your Ranch probably won't derail your efforts.
Oh...and I eat Hidden Valley Ranch most of the time.

Go ahead with the ranch dressing, just check the ingredients for added sugars. I know a lot of us use Ken's Steakhouse Ranch or Hidden Valley Ranch. Remember...use full fat and not the light or low-fat. Happy low-carbing!

Yes - that is the part of the rules that says that we should be choosing dressings that do not have sugar as an ingredient. I know many people do ignore that part and only go by the 'no more than 2 carbs per tablespoon' and eat dressings that have sugar in the ingredients, but if at all possible try to use one with no sugar as suggested by Dr Atkins.
