  • I am having such a hard time....

I have always done low cal/low fat and this time trying Atkins I am having such a hard time not counting them for induction. Can you really eat as much as you want as long as I count carbs? I mean I know thats what the book says but its soo hard, to feel satisfied without eating any carbs I have to eat like 1800-2000 calories a day and the fat OMG dont even ask me about that. I just need some reassurance I guess, when you guys do it do you count cal at all, or are you making sure you stay under a certain number?

    thanks so much!!

ATkins is a high fat diet. Contrary to what we've been told all these years, natural fats aren't the enemy. The trans fats found in margarine and vegetable shortening is the enemy as are the highly refined and processed carbohydrates found in white bread and pastas.

As for eating carbs, you should be eating carbs---vegetable carbs. According to the book, the majority of your daily carb intake should be from vegetables. Since there are 54 vegetables on the Acceptable Foods list, you have a wide variety from which to choose. And these veggies can be very satisfying. For example, canned pumpkin makes a suitable substitute for mashed sweet potatoes. Cauliflower mashed and seasoned with butter makes a delicious stand-in for mashed potatoes.

PS. Fat helps to keep you satisfied between meals. When I was a low fat vegetarian, I used to be soooooo hungry between meals that I ate 3 meals plus 3 snacks during the day of "healthy" low fat vegetarian foods. Needless to say, I gained weight from eating all those "healthy" low fat foods.

You don't need to worry about calories during induction, but you can't sit and gorge yourself either. If you only eat enough to satisfy your hunger then you should naturally be in a proper calorie range. We don't eat until we're full or stuffed, but just until we're satisfied.

          All the best!

I haven't read an Atkins book in awhile. As to those 'natural fats' is there a discussion on eliminating industrialized oils (soy, corn, safflower, etc) and trying to get those fats from pastured animal protein? I'm trying to find some information on how grain-fed proteins may affect dietary research done since the 70s. Reliance on studies done prior to this may not reach the same conclusions. (Think the difference in nutrition in wild vs. farmed salmon).

Thanks for any guidance on this matter.

              Hi there
Here's a link to a discussion that may interest you regarding calories....read all the posts as there's a link in one of them to a page that you'll probably get some use out of. Click Here

I don't put a lot of emphasis on calorie counting, but I understand your worry if that's what you've been focusing on for so long...it's hard to switch that off isn't it? You've really gotta read the book (Dr A's NEW Diet Revolution) quite a few times to get your head around this way of eating. Let go of your fat phobia and you'll be fine.

There is some controversy about vegetables oils like soy, corn, canola and safflower due to the processing method (long story short----the chemicals/heat used during the processing creates "bad" stuff in the oils which may make them more unhealthy. There's also concern about their Omega 3-6-9 ratio.) That's why some nutrition people, like the folks at the Weston Price Foundation, and some low carb people, like Fred Pescatore, advises against using these oils.

However, vegetable oils like cold-pressed olive oil and some nut oils aren't subjected to the same kind of processing so they don't contain any "bad" stuff.

Personally, I don't use corn, soy, canola or safflower oil. I use olive oil (occasionally use peanut oil if I need to do any high heat cooking) in combination with butter for sauteeing meats and veg. And I do use other animal fats like rendered chicken fat or rendered pork fat (I just save the excess fat I trim off the meats in the freezer, then I boil them down to extract the fat.)

Re: I am having such a hard time....

atkins works for me because over the long term, my appetite changes, I can pass up on pizza and bagels any time, over the long term on atkins, i have control over my eating.
                  don't worry about the fat.
I just remember what Dr.Atkins said....

These are the foods you may eat liberally during Induction....he says liberally not all day and night, but eat until you are satisfied, and have several meals a day.

Re: I am having such a hard time....

Atkins goes against the grain about everything that we have been programmed is the "proper" way to lose weight. Just try to relax and go with the flow of things with this wonderful WOL. There are countless pics and testimonies of weight loss success on the boards. Yes you can eat more than you probably thought you could and it actually tastes good! I eat a bunch of super small meals and I do just fine. Not too full and NEVER-EVER hungry. I wouldn't try to press the envelope and go super overboard with the allowed foods because if you eat too many of them it's not a good thing either. The best news of all is, by following the plan as it's outlined, your appetite will naturally begin to suppress itself a bit and you won't want to eat a ton of food anyway. Cravings for things you used to think you couldn't live without will soon become a pure dread for you to even smell. I speak from personal experience. I wish you the very best and can't wait to see your pics of weight loss success around the boards.

I just eat until I'm satisfied and have never known my caloric intake unless I peek at it on fitday. I'm losing steadily and feeling awesome so I don't think about it.

I sonetimes wish we could personalise fitday so it didnt show the total calories at all, just the fat/protein/carb ratio and the net carbs!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!
