  • Um...can we talk about...poo?

Ok...not EXACTLY about poo...but it got your attention.

I want to add a fiber supplement because I think we are supposed to, right?

First...let me start by saying that I'm on day 3 and so far have had no issues. But...that being said...I want to be ahead of the game and not behind it.

I have some psyillium capsuls that your supposed to take 6 a day for the dose but other than saying to take with a full glass of water, there's really no other instructions.

So here's my question...do you take all six at once? Do you spread them out (say 2 at each meal?)? Do you need to take them with meals? If all at once, do you take in the morning or the evening? Do you really need six? Is it dumb to take it if your not yet having issues in that department? Will it make you gassy...I don't want to be gassy. One of the beauties of Atkins is not being gassy...so I hope the answer is no.

    Stretch Goal: 140

Successfully did Atkins in 1998 using 1992 copy of the book...before it was "hip". Lost 60lbs, exercised daily, felt and looked great. And then I moved in with a junk-food loving man, my mom got sick and passed away, then I suffered a spinal cord injury, and junk-food dude left me...and now I weigh 292lbs. That's 22lbs MORE than I weighed the first time around. It's 10 years later...I know this will work for me again.

When it comes to fiber supplements, you really should wait until you have a problem before you start taking them. If it isn't broken, don't fix it...so to speak.

From my own experience, my doctor ordered me to stop taking my fiber supplement because I was getting enough through food and it was actually the cause of most of my constipation problems. If you're taking in too much fiber, you might as well be pouring cement into your digestive tract. I reduced my fiber intake and things have been working fine ever since.

Make sure you're taking in the proper amount of water each day and eating all of your veggies and only resort to supplements if you experience constipation

Wow. I had never heard that before. I'm going to be sure to drink enough water and be aware of this possibility.

How much was 'too much' in your case?

I was averaging around 30 grams per day naturally plus another 10 grams from the maximum supplement dose I was taking. I didn't even realize it was that high until the doctor made me write everything I eat down and calculate fiber intake for a week. Fiber's good for you in the proper doses, but too much will make the constipation problem even worse than if you weren't getting enough fiber.

take them one at a time with water, not at the same time or they will clump in your stompach and absorb all your stomach acids. Also, dont take them within an hour of other medication as they mights absolrm the medicine and therefore it will be less effective.

              Re: Um...can we talk about...poo?

I have been really good on atkins since labor day 2007, but when I tried atkins in 90s and early 2000s, my bowel was always a problem.

Now trust me the longer you are on atkins the easier it gets on the bowels.
Remember every day do not forget to get at least 12-15 net carbs from the salad list, this is a lot of salad if you count out the calories correctly.
Do you know how many cups of lettuce you would need to get 10 net carbs , a lot trust me.

Now I do keep stuff in the house from time to time and you have to be careful about the carb list.
Stuff in my cupboard right now that help the bowels:

              1) Lettuce in fridge at all times
              2) Flax Seed powder
              3) Mineral Oil
              4) Psyllim Husk pills
              5) shark cartilage fiber pills
              6) Big Can of Benefiber

I don't use any right now, but in the beginning flax seed, or toasted flax seed was great.
