  • Nothing Lost in Week 2

    Hi everyone,
I am almost through my second week of induction (Sunday is my last day). So far I have lost 6.6 pounds...all of which came off the first week. Thus far, I haven't shed any additional weight. Have any of you experienced a similar phenomenon? I don't know if it's because I have a higher resistance or, perhaps, if it's because I was low carbing prior to making the switch to Atkins, so this wasn't as much of a shock to my body as it might have been to someone elses? Either way, I'm planning to move into OWL on Monday. I am wondering though, is there anything else I could/should be doing differently -- less calories, more calories, etc.?

I will say I have been eating about 1400 calories a day, comprised of 65% fat, 30% protein and 5% carbs. I am also limiting myself to 2-3 servings of cheese, and am eating all of the salad and other veggies I am allowed.

    Any advice?

    Thanks in advance!
    Jen

Have you checked with the chart in DANDR what your metabolic resistance to weight loss is?

The fact that you lost weight about 10% of the weight you want to lose initially in the first week then not in the second week is a fairly normal occurrence - as is also losing nothing in the first week then some in the second week

Also if you were already lowcarbing before the 14 days induction it would mean you have not had to lose that old 'water weight' so probably have been losing fat

As long as you have been eating when hungry and till full, and not limiting yourself to a low calorie count I would not change a thing except adding your 5 net carbs of induction veggies next week
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

Thanks, Elizellen. I think my biggest challenge is that I entered Atkins having already been on a low carb, ketogenic diet for two months prior. I went from 218 to 197.8 on that plan in just 8 weeks. Then I held steady for almost 3 weeks. The weekend before I started Atkins, I went completely off plan to get out of ketosis, hoping it would shock my body when I started up again and I'd get a bigger loss. The result? I gained a few pounds, starting Atkins at 201.8. So that first 6.6. pounds really was primarily water (from the weekend prior's attempts). I think that's what concerns me.

If I look at the chart in DANDR and compare that to my first attempts (on the old plan), I lost 8 pounds, which means I have an average resistance. And that's probably more accurate than going by my Induction results, since, as I've shared I was already low carbing prior.

I'm thinking the best thing, as you suggested, is just to move into OWL on Monday, and add the first additional 5g of carbs. I admit I still worry if I'm eating enough, or eating too much (darn those old diet habits!) but I'm thinking the average of 1,400 calories I seem to be eating each day is pretty middle-of-the road.

Please do let me know if you have further thoughts/advice!

      Thanks again!
      Jen

Yes, I agree that you seem to be eating 'enough' food - but try not to think of calories and concentrate on carbs.

Eat when hungry and stop when not hungry as Dr Atkins told us to and you won't go wrong I am sure

I sometimes wish that programmes like fitday.com didnt show the total calories as it does throw some members into a spin!! It would be nice if we could customise it to hide the calories but there we are

so long as you are following the rules of induction, may i suggest to take measurements and stay off the scale for awhile. Make sure you are exercising at least 30 minutes a day.

            Elizellen,

I know that many people use fitday as a free website. BUT, for those who consider buying the desktop version, there IS a program that is more customizable. It's called Diet Organizer. It is incredibly easy to use with awesome features. It is, however, $44.95. A 10 day trial is available at www.dietorganizer.com

My favorite part is that I can choose to see any aspect of the food that I want. I choose carbs/fiber/fat/ protein.

I have nothing to do with the company...just find it to be incredible!

That looks like a great programme, and if I had not already got the pc version of fitday i might well think about getting it.

Does it work offline, and can you add custom foods etc?

It does it all. All of the foods are customizable plus you can enter anything. It's fabulous. It has a journal feature, exercise, food, reports, charts. You can also put in your measurements, set goals, etc.

It takes all the data and places it into a calendar with small icons for each item entered (food, measurements, exercise or journal) and you can click on each icon to see what it is referring to. Incredibly flexible. Simple to use and not time-consuming at all.

I can't compare it to fitday since it has been years since I've used that. However, I love that it is an offline program that goes directly on your computer because I live in a rural area where only satellite internet is available and that is a bit slower.

Just thought I'd report in to let those who replied know that I rounded out my last day of induction at a total of 7.4 pounds lost. Looking forward to moving into OWL and the additional veggies that come with the first step!

                  Thanks,

Re: Nothing Lost in Week 2

I actually had that happen to me several times Jennifer. I would drop some weight then my body would go "woah" and fluctuate a bit before deciding to let it go for good. Weight loss is not linear so just know it is normal for it to flucutate. I used to get very upset when I would see it go upwards but as long as I was following the rules and eating appropriately, it always dropped off.
