Re: Cholestoral ?
Love777,
I have slightly lowered my total cholesterol (which wasn't too high to begin with), SIGNIFICANTLY reduced my triglycerides and SIGNIFICANTLY increased my HDL cholesterol (the GOOD cholesterol) in the 2.5 years I've been on Atkins.
Most people on here report an improvement in their cholesterol numbers.~Joy
Start 1/2/06 Goal 6/11/07 restart 1/2/09
268.5/196/185
QUIT SMOKING JULY 23, 2006 while on Atkins

Just when you think you've eaten enough vegetables...EAT SOME MORE!

Re: Cholestoral ?
I just had my lipids re-done ~ last fall my doc wanted me to go on a cholesterol reducing drug. I was very pleased to see that my good cholesterol has skyrocketed and my triglycerides have plummeted since I started Atkins last fall (and I have not been 100% cheat-free! LOL).
Thanks for helping me avoid statins, Dr. A!

Re: Cholestoral ?
In some people there is a rise in the first six months on the plan, but I am with the other posts-- my total cholesterol has dropped to 169, LDL in the 30s, HDL in the 70s!!! and Triglycerides down to 40. It doesn't get any better than that. So for the naysayers, I will just keep munching my bacon and eggs and learn to live with these high cholesterol numbers (wink)

Re: Cholestoral ?
Poor cholesterol readings are a product of carbohydrates and insulin production. High quality dietary fat and protein have never been shown to increase cholesterol readings. On the contrary, the only way to lower your numbers is to reduce carbohydrates. Stop eating sugars and your numbers will plummet. Mine went from 245 to 180 in about 6 months--that said, your cholesterol number is a poor indication of your health. Look instead to your total triglyceride number divided by your HDL. The lower that number, the better off you are.Originally posted by love777 View PostDoes this diet make your cholestoral higher? Mine is already borderline almost high.
Taubes: Good Calories, Bad CaloriesThe problem is the carbohydrates in the diet, their effect on insulin secretion, and thus the hormonal regulation of homeostasis—the entire harmonic ensemble of the human body. The more easily digestible and refined the carbohydrates, the greater the effect on our health, weight, and well-being.
ABC News: Excerpt: 'Good Calories, Bad Calories'
We evolved to eat a high fat/protein diet with limited carbs. It really is simple, stop eating carbohydrates and you will return to a state of well-being.*

*quality fats are grass-fed. If you eat grain-fed proteins you, along with the animals that eat them, will be fattened by the industrial feedlots that have ruined both our health and our environment. But it makes the food corporations rich and that trumps everything.

Re: Cholestoral ?
Actually, a reading between 180-220 is great for overall mortality. I recently saw a U-shaped graph showing that above 220 is a concern for circulatory problems but under 180 may be detrimental for other factors.Originally posted by joee5 View PostMine has gone down. Real high before, (307), and now 2 months later it stood at 211. Lil high but I'll take it. God Bless, Joe
Your cholesterol number is in the preferred range, again the triglyceride/HDL ratio being a better indicator of overall health.

I think you should re-read chapters 1-9 in the book. Dr. Atkins does a good job of explaining why eating fat lowers your cholesterol.~Megs~
