Did a search for this but only got 2 hits on it.

Is Salsa allowed during induction and is there a prefered brand??

Yes, just look for one whose ingredients are on the allowed veggie list. Make sure no sugar or high fructose corn syrup are ingredients. Then count the carbs.

      Re: Salsa

I dont think anyone has posted a recommended brand for salsa, but depending on ingredients it should be induction-legal, just try to guess how much of a cup of the tomatoes and any other veggies in it you have eaten.

You just need to check the ingredients to make sure they havent added HFCS or another kind of sugar.

Here is a recipe from Gordon Ramsey (no swear words I promise ) which looks easy and quick to make.

      Fresh tomato salsa
      Gordon Ramsay

      2 large vine-ripened tomatoes
      ½ red onion, finely chopped
      1 tbsp fresh coriander, chopped
      1 dsp white vinegar
Salt and freshly ground black pepper

1 With a small, sharp knife, remove the green stalk from the tomatoes, then cut them in half. With a dessertspoon, scoop out the seeds and discard.

2 Chop the tomatoes finely. Place in a small bowl, add the onion, coriander and vinegar, and season with salt and pepper.

        Thanks so much!!

The brand in the fridge as sugar...of course. It has 3 grams of carbs per 2 tbsp with 1 gram of fiber. 2 grams of sugar. It is quite down the list but it is still there.

What is dsp for the vinegar?

Looks like I will be making my own...

          Re: Salsa

Let's look at this label: First you look at the right side there where the nutrition panel is. Note that it says 1.1 gram of sugar?? You might think, "Oh, this has sugar and I can't have that"

BUT WAIT! Remember, there are NATURAL sugars in vegetables too. Hmmm, I wonder if that might be what those sugars are. So, look for the ingredient list...that's to the left side of the label. There is NO SUGAR or HFCS in this! HOORAY! We can have it!!

Remember, all vegetables have some sugars in them too. And, that's okay. It's white sugar and high fructose corn syrup, corn syrup, fructose, etc that we want to avoid as ADDED INGREDIENTS. The same goes for any dairy products. Most dairy products will have some natural sugars (lactose), that's okay as long as it doesn't have additional sugar added to it. The only way to tell is to look at the ingredient list.

            Re: Salsa

Hey Joy...first what a great post to drive home the point of how to read a label!!

I did read the ingredients though :^( I usually do that first then the nutrition facts. Mine says:
Tomato Puree (water and tomato paste), Diced Tomatoes in Tomato juice (contains Calcium Chloride, citric acid), Green Bell peppers, Jalapeno peppers, onions, vinegar, salt, garlic powder, sugar, natural flavor, cilantro.

I am sure that over half of the sugars in the nutrition list are natural since sugar is so far down on the list. And I only wanted to use a Tbsp. I have 2 jars of this stuff in my fridge.

Here is what I was going to do with it.

scrambled eggs with shredded cheese, sour cream and salsa wrapped in a lettuce leaf. Doesn't that sound yummy?? SIGH!

I have been researching salsa recipes. They all look pretty easy. But I don't have any of the stuff here at home and not going to town shopping soon.

              Re: Salsa

AFter watching ****'s Kitchen, I'm not at all surprized Ramsay's salsa doesn't contain chilis/hot peppers---he seems to have a very delicate palate!

Elsie, I think "dsp" is "tsp" (teaspoon).

I make my own salsa too, because it tastes better and because I know exactly what's in it. Basically, I chop a couple tomatoes (about 2-3 cups), chop a jalapeno pepper, chop onion (maybe about 1/2 cup), chop cilantro (about 1/4 cup more if you like cilantro), a pinch of ground cumin, mix it up and that's it. If I can't find fresh tomatoes, I use canned chopped tomatoes, drained of their packing juices, instead.

LOL! thanks so much! I wasn't sure if that would be a tsp or dash or something I hadn't heard of before. Cilantro comes up a lot in the recipes I looked at but none of them had coriander. Interesting.

                  Re: Salsa

I usually make my own too. Tomatoes, onions, cilantro, jalapeno and a touch of lemon with salt and pepper. It's yum, yummy!

As for a jarred salsa, check your store brands. I've been finding lately that the store's brands of tomato products don't have the added sugar like the big name brands do.

                      Re: Salsa

                      dsp could be 'dessertspoon'
                      From wikipedia
A dessert spoon is a general purpose spoon, and a (very seldom used) unit of measure equal to 10 mls or 2 teaspoons.

                          Re: Salsa

I make my own each week--my fiance and I go through a huge bowl of it in just that short amount of time! I put it on taco salads, on eggs, on chicken, etc.

I don't use exact amounts, but I'll try to estimate...

                          12 roma tomatoes
3 jalapeno peppers (WITH seeds and membranes, just pull off the stems)
                          1" slice of white onion
                          4-5 cloves garlic
1 large handful of fresh cilantro
                          3 green onions

Combine ingredients in a food processor, process until desired consistency (you can leave the veggies in larger or smaller chunks, etc.).

                          Add:
                          juice of 1 lime
                          1 tsp sea salt

Stir, and let the salsa "rest" for a few hours. You can eat it right away, but it's SOOOOO much better after the flavors have had a chance to blend.
