  • Did you kick morning coffee or tea?

So, a couple of weeks ago I "cleaned up" my induction. Part of the clean up included kicking the morning coffee, mostly because I realized I was taking in way too much cream and splenda (I like my coffee sweet and creamy). So, I quit the Java

However, I still felt that I had to have that hot cup of somethin' in the morning. I switched to green tea which has wayyyy less caffeine and does not require cream, nor as much splenda. And even though green tea is supposed to be good for you with all the antioxidents etc, I really want to get rid of the tea/splena altogether, but just the thought of it...OY! I know I just have to be brave and just do it

Looking to hear from anyone who has faced this challenge successfully and can share their experience

Before I started Atkins on July 5, I was drinking a cup of coffee every morning with about a quarter of the mug of half n half and 6....count em.....6 packets of sugar. On the days I had 2 cups, I had at least 12 packets of sugar! I've been drinking coffee off and on for years. Ok, I've been drinking warm milk and sugar with coffee, but you get the idea.

I quit cold turkey when I started Atkins. Started drinking ice water with my breakfast. Other than the raging headache I had the first couple of days, it hasn't been bad. Now I'm used to it and when I wake up I'm wide awake instead of the "I need coffee" drowsiness I used to deal with. Oh, and I usually wake up thirsty for a glass of water.

You should drink your coffee the way it's meant to be drank. BLACK. I drink 2+ pots daily and add nothing to it. God Bless, Joe

Re: Did you kick morning coffee or tea?

I quit coffee cold turkey too. Actually I tried black coffee day one, and sorry Joe, I couldn't take it, BELCH! I used drink a large 16+ ounce cup of coffee every morning with ALOT of fat free creamer and at least a Tbsp or more of regular sugar. I decided just to stop drinking it. I hate to say that I've switched to diet soda some mornings. I know that's not the best alternative but it hasn't caused a prob yet. I do drink 16oz or so of water many mornings too. The best advice I can give is just stop and let nature work it out of ya. It was also easier to do because it's been over 70, sometimes 80 degrees outside by 7:30 am so the last thing I want is something hot on the way to work.

Giving up my light Jamba Juice for breakfast, that was hard.

          Flavored tea!!!!!

Go to the celestial seasons section and buy 4 or 5 teas....most have so much flavor - that you do not need splenda at all....it is almost like having your fruit juices back....and does not taste quite as "earthy" as the green tea although they make some great green teas that have great taste too.

...to be honest - I take a half cup of coffee - add water....add one splenda and one dash cream....and then just go.....it gives me the taste without so many of the downfalls.

Thanks y'all! All very helpful suggestions. I think I'll try the celestial seasons herbal tea thing first. Hadn't thought of that, it it makes sense.

            This board rocks!

Re: Did you kick morning coffee or tea?

Oh I hear you! When I started I was consuming a pot a day and I like it very blond and very sweet. I miss the hot something in the morning - right now not too bad - but I know when winter comes around I am going to have to do something. I can't drink tea without sweetener. I'd love to be able to drink coffee black.

Joe: Are you drinking decaf or reg. ? I may start trying to learn to be a straight black coffee drinker - I don't know if it's possible - but I miss it.

Re: Did you kick morning coffee or tea?

I am having a tough time letting go... BUT I went from a lot of cream and splenda (3packets) to a teaspoon of heacvy whipping cream and 1 splenda...I can enjoy THREE cups a day this way...!! It is probably affecting my rate of loss, but I can't lose all my vices!!!!! Besides the slower you lose it, the more likely it is to stay off!

Toaste, I drink a huge amount of coffee and do absolutely no exercise and am still losing weight nicely. So I dont see how it will affect your weightloss. Mind games. Mind over matter. If you think something's gonna affect you, then it will. Stay strong and stay true. God Bless,Joe

I'm trying to kick the coffee habit too. I'm trying decaf tea instead and i'll add one packet of splenda and very little cream. I think it's better w the tea because it doesn't need as much splenda or cream and it saves on at least 5 cabs for thos of us who like it light and sweet.

Coffee with some cream. Never hurt my weight loss and the sanity it provides is well worth not giving it up. I often have problem with finding familiar flavors when I am on an induction menu.

Coffee can provide you with continuity in your diet, especially if you are a heavy drinker, that reminds you that even though your basic diet has changed-not everything you once loved is gone.

I say to myself, "well.. even though my induction menu is going to not be a fun experience, at least I can drink some coffee after a meal to wash my palate."

I drink hot water when I fancy something hot!! Sometimes with a slice of lemon or squirt of lemon juice in it.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

You're right. I am on my thrid day now and I miss my morning coffee but have found tea with much less cream and only 2 splendas to be a great replacement. I was craving someting sweet and wanted to give in last night on my way home but I stopped at Dunkin Donuts and ordered a decaf iced black coffee with no sweetener. It wasn't the same without the cream and sugar but it did kick my craving. I guess it was the familiarity of the tarty coffee beans that satisfied me. I thought to myself when I was done with the medium cup how I never thought in a million years I would actually appreciate a black coffee with no sugar. Yuck! but it did it's job. I think this may be my new thing when those cravings hit me strong. Has anyone ever used coffee as well for that sweets satisfier? any other things you guys use?

I've heard of people stirring coconut oil into coffee. I actually have added it to lattes. it provides a cream-like mouthfeel and a little flavour and sweetness. not enough sweetness to replace splenda if you use a lot of it, but it's not a bad addition to a cup at all. just mix it A LOT.
