  • Help! going into starve mode! Are these legal to eat during induction?

Red or Black beans.. at least one cup full

    Avocados?

also, I was thinking.. I do enjoy butter milk. Can I drink some in order to increase my fat intake during induction...

    Last question.

Since I am hungry most of the time during induction ( been 5 days today ) can I eat as much as possible ( lettuce, brocolly ) without worrying about my carbs?

    thank you sooo much

Hello Elcid and welcome to the board! ^_^ I'm glad you posted here so we can help you out. I'll try to answer your questions to the best of my knowledge.

The red and black beans you are not allowed to have during induction whatsoever. They are added in to your daily diet during Ongoing Weight Loss, Rung 6, I believe. Avocado's can also wait til you reach OWL, but You can only eat so much of one in order for it to be one serving.

As for the buttermilk, that is a big no no! There are other ways you can increase the fat intake. Make garlic butter for your steak, or even add a tablespoon of mayo to your salad. Cook in olive oil. Little things like that will go a long way for you.

If you're hungry, then there must be something that's wrong.

Could you post a sample menu as to what you eat during the day. Perhaps I can help you, or one of our other friendly and lovely ADBB members will come along shortly and let you know what they think. =)

Avocados are allowed during induction... you can have a half of a small one per day. If you are hungry then you should eat. You definitely shouldn't eat all the veggies you want though! You can have 2 cups of veggies from the salad veggie list and 1 cup of veggies from the other list or 3 cups of salad veggies per day. You can have fish or meat or eggs. How about a hamburger patty or a chicken breast or can of tuna? Those are no carbs and help make you feel full longer. So does adding fat to your diet in the form of butter or olive oil etc. You can also have up to 4 ounces of cheese per day. I agree that you should post a menu. After 5 days of induction you shouldn't be feeling so hungry. Have you read the Dr. Atkins new diet revolution? It is so important to read the book and do it exactly the way Dr. A said.

What do you mean by starve mode? Are you hungry? or are you eating too few calories?
What do you normally eat and how much?
Here is a list of the legal induction foods. Sticking to the list helps you go into ketosis and have the full feeling.

If you don't have the book, you should read some of the stickies to see what is on the induction menu to get you through until you can get the book. Even when you reach the right rung (rung 6) to have any kind of beans, the serving size is 1/4 of a cup. That small amount has 10 carbs.

Buttermilk is usually fat free. You can have some heavy cream and hard cheeses during induction, but no milk or soft cheeses or yogurt.

There's no reason at all to be hungry on induction. You can eat until satisfied (not stuffed) from any meat, poultry, fish, eggs, butter, mayo, and you can have up to 4 ounces of aged cheeses and cream cheese. You are to have 3 cups of salad veggies (there's a long list) or 2 cups of salad and a cup of veggies on the other list, which includes broccoli, tomatoes, onions, etc. With all of that available to you, there is no reason for you to go into starvation mode.

Please get the book, even if you get it from the library. There is no way you will be successful if you don't have any idea what you are allowed to eat for the first two weeks.

buttermilk has little to no fat. It originated as the liquid left over aftr butter was churned and removed. Now it is artificially made with fermented cows milk. So you aren't missing any fat by not eating it!

That is what's so confusing to me. You can have 2 cups of veggies from the salad list and 1 cup of veggies from the other list or the 3 cups of salad. I am confused about that because what does he mean by when you're hungry, eat until you're satisfied? What if the satisfaction goes over the 3 cups of veggies?

well you can eat meat until satisfied. Eating till satisfied means the no carb foods, not the veggies. If you are hungry but just don't want to eat chicken, you are not really hungry. You just have the munchies.

Re: Help! going into starve mode! Are these legal to eat during induction?

thanks everyone. You guys are an informative bunch!

I havent got the book yet, but will definitively do so. I have been reading the sample stickies and i am trying to learn as I go.

I used to drink a lot of juice and have bread on each meal, I also used to have half a plate full of rice etc.. As you can see, I used to eat a lot

It has been five days since induction and as an example this is what I had for dinner.

                  3 fried eggs
                  2 slices of cheese ( fried )
                  1 piece of bbq meat

and thats it! + lots of water.

What I had for lunch was.

                  1. broiled chicken 3 pieces / cabbage / lots of water

My guess is that i may not be hitting the carb at all..

BBQ sauce contains a LOT of sugar. You might want to check it out and see how much was used in cooking it, carbs. can be absorbed also.

Yes you have to read labels. Stuff with sugar (honey etc) has to be avoided.

No you should limit yourself to those veggies. If you are still hungry - things like boiled eggs (deviled eggs), pepperoni, left over meats, a cream cheese treat are good to fill you up. Remember to have fats with your meals throughout the day so that you stay satisfied better. But if you do get hungry - just eat.

I think your hunger is being triggered by the beans and hidden sugars. I also think you are not eating enough of the things you should be eating.

Here is a sample from my day:

BFAST: 2 scrambled eggs and two slices of bacon

LUNCH: chef's salad with lettuce, 2 oz each ham, turkey, cheese and a boiled egg with oil and vinegar dressing and 6 black olives

SNACK: 2 slices of american cheese cut into squares and microwaved for a minute or so to make them into crispy crackers.

DINNER: 8 oz steak or two pieces chicken (barbequed with a vinegar marinade and spices only) steamed green beans tossed with fried mushrooms, and a small green salad.

EMERGENCY AFTER DINNER SNACK: 1 tablespoon cream cheese or a diet rootbeer with 2 tablespoons cream and a dash of vanilla (rootbeer float)

I am posting this whole day so you can see how much you can eat and see that the veggies are important. I can't imagine being hungry with this much food. Hope this gives you some ideas.

You can budget some snacks along with meals in fitday.com. Plan on some turkey or roast beef or broccoli, whatever you like and what fits where you are at, i.e. Induction. You can plan your shopping also. This supports the book's point to clean out your kitchen and have only the right foods on hand. Water is great too since it satisfies the urge to eat/drink while doing things, plus you need to get your share of water.
What are you doing for exercise? Once you are off the sugars and then get into exercise, you will find staying on the program - including feeling like you are not starving - is easier.

                              Elcid --

You've already received answers to your orginal question... no beans, no buttermilk. Do make sure you get in enough veggies -- ideally something at every meal. Dr A recommends 20 carbs during induction -- not as few as possible. I know it's tempting to do what's easiest (or tastes best), or to think that "less (carbs) are even better," but try hard to follow the plan as written. It will pay off, I promise. If you're still hungry, have more protein. OH, and DRINK more WATER! Celery is good for hunger -- relatively low carb, crunchy, and it takes a while to eat. HB eggs (with salt or made into egg salad) are good fillers, too.

I know you haven't gotten the book yet; the stickies are a good resource in the meantime. But if you want to be someone who is SUCCESSFUL on Atkins (not "low carb," but ATKINS specifically, GET IT SOON! I picked up a copy for $.99 on Ebay, plus a few dollars shipping. Make sure you get the 2002 edition.

                              Best of luck!
