  • Does Fat Matter???

Hi this is my first post, just in the first few days of induction and have a question, apologies if its stupid or badly worded.

I understand that with Atkins we are expected to be eating a large amount of fat.

I also understand that when the body shifts into ketosis it utilises fat as the primary fuel source.

My question is that in ketosis, is fat ingested through diet also broken down as an energy source. If so would weight loss be increased by eating less fat during the diet or is the amount irrelevant as dietary fat will just pass through our system with out being utilised (i.e is it just excreted).

For example if the body requires 2500 kcals of energy for a day and you ate 2000 kcals of dietary fat would only 500 kcals be burnt from fat stores or will all 2500 be burnt from fat stores automatically.

Basically will your weight loss be faster if you grill rather than deep fry your chicken lol. Thank you in advance for your help, this forum is a fantastic resource

    Re: Does Fat Matter???

Well, I am no expert -but I was wondering the same thing. I have been reading and from what I understand the ration of fat to carbs is very important at tolerating and burning through things. I think it also relates to sugar detox, since it is warned that eating too much protein is a problem b/c in alrge quantities it metabolizes as a sugar. I deceided to go with the 65%fat/30% protien and 5% carbs and have faith.

I think that deep fried * is never a better choice than grilled, baked, steamed - however you need to still be eating the fat somewhere. I don't over-do anything in the deep fried catagory. But DH and I did an experiment with our chicken wings. We used to deep fry them and then do the butter/hot sauce thing. So we tried steaming and then roasting them. The steamed and roasted ones were greasier BY FAR than the deep fried ones. I think you will find there isn't much to deep fry on Atkins WOL anyway and the occasional isn't going to set you back.

You can certainly deepfry any foods as long as you dont use breadcrumbs or similar starchy flour to do it - we often see recipes here made using crushed pork rinds or grated parmesan cheese (the powder-y kind that you buy in a tub) as a coating before deep or shallow frying or baking. Dip the food in beaten egg or mayo to help the 'crumbs' stick. I have even used ground linseed (flax) as a coating when I had no pork rinds or parmesan handy.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

As to lowfatting it, if you try that you might end up eating too much protein, which (as Dr Atkins told us) could turn into glucose!

Fat sure matters. It keeps a person satisfied and fat is least likely (compared to protein and carbs) to make us fat. Carbs can make our blood sugar go wild and too much protein can turn into glucose (and eating a lot of protein is hard on the liver). But on Atkins you got to eat - not skimp on things. Because you do not want to starve either as that makes body want to hang on to the fat it has.
On induction we kind of aim for 65% of calories to come from fat, 5 from carbs and 30 from protein. Later on the fat percentage will go down some and carb come up. Protein will stay around the same.

However, eating too much when we are trying to lose weight is cautioned against. If you need 2500 cals you should not go over it.
