How often is it suggested to use these sticks? Once a day or more? I looked and looked through the book, but there wasn't anything about it.

I am on day 5 of induction and when I checked today I had a medium pink color--is that good, or should it be darker?

    Thanks much

    Re: Ketostix

Any change in the color is a sign that you are in ketosis. There are too many variables that go into determining how dark they may get so you shouldn't stress the specific shade.

I checked them a couple times a day when I started because of the novelty. Now I usually only check when I think I may have "overdosed" on carbs the day before. Perhaps if I were in a stall for any length of time, I might check them on a daily basis just to make sure I was still on the right track.

Ultimately you want to get to a point in the diet where you aren't adding stress (which isn't good for anyone trying to lose weight) by worrying about a number on a scale or a color of a chemical stick. Good luck!

Just do it once a day. The book suggests in the afternoon. Go for the same time every day. When I was younger, I could get a purple easily, but now I am lucky to get a pink. I think it also has to do with how much liquid I ingest, so that may be with you, too. Or, you could be a resistant dieter. Either way, don't stress too much if you only get pink. That means you are burning fat, and that is what you want. Good luck!

Thanks Eric and Joyabear--That helps a lot. I was getting frustrated with myself because the first time I did Atkins several years ago, I dropped weight quickly the first two weeks. Now I am on day 6 and only lost 3 pounds. I guess any weight loss is good--but I am an impatient soul. I think my metabolism has slowed down as well since i am into the menopause years--so that might be another factor in this.

          Re: Ketostix

Yep, it must be the menopause monster that slows us down. I have to constantly remind myself that if I do my job, the diet will (eventually) do its. I also have to remind myself that I didn't gain 5 pounds every week, so I shouldn't expect to lose it that quickly either. And if this is a lifetime eating style, I guess it doesn't matter if it takes a few years. But the last time, I lost almost all my weight in less than a year. I am now on month 11 this time and still need to drop 60 pounds more. So I am empathetic to your desire to just get it done. A big boon for me was when I managed to slip back into the regular sizes, albeit it sizes 14 & 16. It sure beats 24s! Set your sites on your first goal and let that be the motivation to keep going even when things aren't evident to you. Just last week, after not losing a single ounce, I walked into the office and a secretary exclaimed, "You are just melting away so fast!" That was just what I needed that day. Keep up the good work.

Hi bonnie rose--i think it's good just to know that you are working the program. That was why I got them--I was hoping that even if I wasn't losing massive amounts of weight, that I would be able to look at the stick and know that I was on track. I too, have been on a gazillion diets--hopefully this plan is the ticket to our new lives!

I didnt read everyone's responses, but I learned from someone on this site that if it is dark purple you are dehydrated and need more water...

SO! I think medium is perfect.

I check mine once every 3 days... because I weigh myself every day and I don't want to many things to start feeling like chores.

Hey thanks! I never thought of that. I am drinking tons of water because I am so darn thirsty--so that must be the reason.
