  • New to the boards!

Hello! I am new to both Atkins and the boards. I'm on day 3 of Induction and things are going pretty well. I am trying to get my ticker to work in my post, so we'll see how this goes!

Also, a quick question I forgot to ask on my introduction thread.

6 weeks ago, my husband and I began bike riding. We have been riding 8 miles, 5 days a week. I started out completely sedentary, so building up to 8 miles has been quite a challenge. But during day 2 and 3 of induction, I barely made it 2 miles and was so physically exhausted I had to turn around and go back home. I also feel a little out of sorts. Tired and a little cranky, slightly dizzy. Other than being about 20 lbs. overweight, I'm in excellent health, so can I attribute this to carb and sugar withdrawls? My entire diet before induction pretty much consisted of carbs and sugar, so I guess I can expect an adjustment period.

Oh, and one more thing, In the book, it says to stick strictly to the listed food items, but online on the menu page, it lists several types of Atkins bars and shakes as appropriate for induction. Anyone have any information or suggestions on this? Thanks!

    Re: New to the boards!

On ADBB we use DANDR version 2002. The website includes things on induction and in the diet in general that Dr Atkins did not call legal. If you really want fantastic results, I'd follow his plan as well. That being said, some people can have sugar alcohols and not have any stalling etc, but some of us get great big stalls from this stuff. If you do use them (in emergency sittuations) make sure that you count the sugar alcohols in your 3 servings of sugar subs per day

However, I had a shake 2 days in a row because I was on the go like crazy, and didn't seem to stall, who knows because I could have possibly lsot more and I just don't know it!!!!

I'd only use them if you have to!
    Have a Beautiful Day

Hi Bonnierose! I'm also from Washington State. Thank you so much for the info on the bars and shakes. I kind of thought that might be the case. I have the book, and have read it cover to cover, so it just didn't seem like the bars and shakes would be very condusive to weight loss the way the book explained that induction works. I have an incredible sweet tooth, and was really hoping the bars would be okay, but after reading your post, I think I will forego them until a later time. Have a great evening! Jen

Grrr. How come I can't get my ticker to show up? It only shows up as a URL, not an image. On the ticker page, it gives you three different formats to cut and paste. HELP!!! I'm going to try pasting another one now.

          Re: New to the boards!

          Hi everyone !
I'm also new to the boards and Atkins... well, new~again to Atkins. I was on Atkins almost 15 years ago and lost 35 lbs.
For the past week I've been toying with low carbing, but still clinging to my two glasses of milk every day. After reading a lot of the posts on here, I'm now committed to doing this right and will forego my milk for a while.
Thank you all for your wonderful posts, they are truly inspiring !

            Hi Jen! Welcome!

Wow 8 miles thats awesome! Yeah your symptoms sound alike the the induction flu and it varies from person to person however I don't know anyone who's flu lasted over a week so bare through it, it will get better.

I must say I do munch on the bars from time to time and if you browse the section in the walmart or supermarket where they sell them it tells you on the back of the box whether you can have them during induction.

However, don't take my word for it...use caution. I think Bonnie's response was correct.

Good Luck were all here rooting for you!

The bars & shakes are not Induction friendly~~~check out the list of ingredients. Stick to the list that is in the book & you'll do just fine!

Good luck on your journey & your Induction flu should end in a day or two.

Hi Lisa and Showstopper! Thanks for the replies!

Lisa, I know what you mean about the milk. It's hard to give up. Good luck with restarting.

Showstopper, Thanks for the info. I'm sure that what I'm feeling is just induction flu, and hopefully it goes away soon. Yeah, can you believe 8 miles a day biking? When we started I could not do one. I'm pretty excited about my progress, though hadn't seen any weight loss from the excersize, so I think Atkins will be the key for me in addition to continuing the biking.

Good luck to you both and hope to chat with you more as we progress through induction! Have a great evening, Jen

                  Re: New to the boards!

I see you put it at the bottom of your post, but instead of having to paste it each time, you can paste it into a permanent signature (it can be changed later not that kind of permanent)
TO PUT YOUR TICKER ON YOUR PROFILE:
                  1. At the top of the screen under where it tells you where in the threads you are "located", click on "user cp"
                  2. scroll down the page and on the left list of menus, under "settings and options" you can click on "edit signature"
                  3. Paste whatever you want it to do for your sig there... Most people put their name, age height and weight and goals... weight is known by most if you post it like this:
                  Starting weight/Current weight/Goal Weight 230/220/120

But you can obviously put whatever you want!!!!

                    Re: New to the boards!

Thank you SO much everyone for your helpful advice and encouragement. I have only been on the message boards since yesterday, but I feel like I've found this whole new world of support!

BonnieRose, THANK YOU for explaining how to put my signature and all in. I was wondering how everyone did that without pasting every time! I went in and put it all as my signature, so when I post this reply, it should show up. Hoping to get a pic on soon. Have a fantastic day! Jen

                        Re: New to the boards!

Okay BonnieRose, that's a great way to look at it, 7%. I like it! I am short and very small boned, so the extra 25-30 lbs I am packing around is pretty significant for my shape and size. I've actually lost 2 more as of this evening, but I'm sure that it's water weight from drinking so much water and flushing my body out. Drinking the water is the hardest part of this for me, second to no sugar, but I'm not really feeling like I'm missing sugar today. So are you ( or anyone else out there!) having issues with cramping? My calf and arch of my foot cramped up so badly today I could not move. I know the book says that part of losing minerals or something like that too quickly from your body. I will have to look in to taking a supplement for that. Induction flu is gone though today. I'm feeling much better. Enjoy your evening! Jen

                          Re: New to the boards!

Jen... Potassium and Calcium can help with the cramping of the legs... As long as it subsides after going on the supplements for a bit then I wouldn't worry about it. Avocados are a great source of potassium as well. A can of V8 while not induction friendly is a great source of potassium if you need something to alieve it immediately.
