OK, I went with my husband to the doctor today--the appointment was for him, but the doc is my doctor too. During our conversation my husband mentioned that I was doing Atkins. She stopped abruptly and said, "OH don't do that--don't ever do Atkins" When I asked her why, she said, "Atkins doesn't give a flip about healthy fats or your long term health--go on South Beach it is much healthier." I told her that I felt great on this plan and was losing weight--but she was adamant that South Beach was the only way to go. I know nothing about South Beach--can someone tell me why she said that. From what I can see-this plan is quite good.

Re: somebody help me out here
Some doctors like Atkins - others do not. Other doctors recommend Atkins to their patients.
It sounds like your doctor may think that there are too much saturated fats on Atkins. South Beach - emphasize vegetable fats. However, studies show (and the blood work of long time members here show) that people who follow Atkins will maintain a good blood work profile.

Re: somebody help me out here
Saturated fats are allowed on Atkins, but Dr. Agaston of South Beach contends they will raise cholesterol. The thing is, most persons' cholesterol improves on Atkins. And Atkins steers us away from the trans fats and nasty shortenings, etc. She may not realize how much we are encouraged to use good oils and such.
Misconception, Atkins dieters nibble bacon all day. If you have read your book and understand the principles at work, you will do fine.
Knock her socks off with your succes, do clean Atkins and show her up the next time she does your lipids!

Re: somebody help me out here
Wow! Talk about derailing!! I think that doctors are people just like anyone else. Nobody knows EVERY detail of every diet...especially if that is not their specialty! My own doctor has been on Atkins and has had enormous success. There have also been numerous studies on Atkins by acclaimed Universities who have found that this is the most effective way to lose weight! There is some question about Osteporosis because of a lack of long term study (there are lots of people out there who abandon their WOE apparently) so this is basically an guess. But tell me...do you think that South Beach or better yet the way you were eating before are any less risky?
I say you should just go for it!!! Lose the weight...feel incredible and prove her and her half information wrong! *end rant* LOL
Congrats on your success!

Re: somebody help me out here
Just to let you know... my doc had nothing but positives to say about atkins after my lipids came back well, and my weight loss was so positive. Liver enzymes were excellent, cholesterol was much improved, etc... I think it all depends upon the doctor and how educated they are with low carb lifesytles. My doc, who was also overweight, is now doing his own low carb life and has lost weight and feels better as well. I would not give his name here because of professional courtesy, but will say that he's a convert. My success has just been a part of it, but he has educated himself on my journey as much as I have. If your doc has a real problem with it, I'd suggest getting a different opinion.

Re: somebody help me out here
Some people speak before they think, and some doctors think they know everything just because they are doctors. Docs are NOT always right, I have had personal experience with Doctors being wrong. Do what is best for you, get a new Doctor if you have to. Good luck!
Try to get 80-100 ounces a day!
Whether you think you can, or you think you can't, you're right.

Re: somebody help me out here
WOW! You folks are all so great and so supportive! I really appreciate your opinions, your testimonies and mainly your support. I have done a very clean induction--I am on day 14 and have lost 7 pounds. I think I'm doing great and feeling really well. I can't wait to go to her in a couple of months when my weight is down and get my lipid profile. My last cholesterol before starting Atkins was 248 and I am sure I will have better results in a couple of months. I was beginning to have all these doubts until so many of you spoke up with your stories and your encouragement--thank you. I am planning to stay on induction for a week or two longer to see if I can get a bit more weight off before going to the next rung.
Gratefully,
Karen

Re: somebody help me out here
I have been with my doctor for over 30 years. Because of another condition, I have to have full lab work every 90 days. He is always amazed at my blood lipids and especially my triglycerides. My healthy/good cholesterol went from 26 to 58. I have lost over 120 pounds and my health hasn't been this good in 20 years.
If you really want to read what Dr. Atkins has to say about fats, get the book "Atkins For Life" and read the section about mixing fats for optimum health. The good doctor knew what he was talking about.
If you really want to knock your docs socks off, eat avocado, black olives, extra virgin olive oil and fish a few times a week and your good cholesterol will skyrocket and your bad will come down. All allowed and encouraged on this WOE.

Re: somebody help me out here
Thank you Sunny--you have done fantastic with your dedication to the Atkins plan. I am going to eat those things you suggested and plan to knock the socks off my doc. Aside from feeling like crap the first few days because I wasn't eating enough veggies, I am feel fabulous now and I am sure that my blood panels will be great when I go back.
The only other concern that I have with this plan as the past two days when I have gotten up in the morning, the muscles in my legs have hurt--especially when climbing stairs. Has anyone had an issue with this? If so, what have you done to remedy the situation?
Thanks!

Re: somebody help me out here
You need to make sure you are getting enough potassium and magnesium. When you lose a lot of water weight at the beginning, you lose too many electrolytes and need to replace them. Taking supplements is the best way until you are taking in enough through your veggies and meat.Originally posted by write2thepoint View PostThank you Sunny--you have done fantastic with your dedication to the Atkins plan. Claudication
The chances of claudication are pretty low (1% of population under 60 and more prevalent in men than women) but if cramps last for a long time check it out w/ your doctor
