  • First Day!! HELP!!!!

Hi all! Doing my very first day of Induction...hubby is doing it with me. The difference is...he is VERY hungry and I'm NOT. But I'm still eating! He is too and we're both keeping track of what we're eating - it's harder for him because he's at work and I am a stay at home mama. But I'm worrying about how I'm going to hit my 12-15 carbs. Without stuffing myself or going over my cheese allotment that is...let me post what I've had today...its 2:45 pm now so all I have left is another snack or two and dinner.

Breakfast: 3 egg omelette with 1/2 cup of spinach and just a smidge of onions with a little grated cheddar

    2.2 net carbs

Snack 1 babybel cheese (they're semisoft cheese so I think that's alright)

    1.0 net carb

    Lunch

2 cups romaine lettuce (I don't like salad dressing at all)
tuna packed in water but with dollop of mayo sprinkled with tsp. of parmesan
    1 slice American cheese
    1 boiled egg with salt

    2.8 net carbs

so that's 6.0 carbs so far...but I've already eaten the 2 cups of salad veggies in that category, right? OR, and please don't laugh at me because my book is on its way to me as I type this, can we have 2-3 cups of any of those veggies...like can I have 2-3 cups of each of those veggies?? Does this make sense? Ex. 2-3 cups of peppers in the afternoon and later 2-3 cups of cucumbers? Or was I right the first time?

I really need to be clear on this asap. Sorry!

    Re: First Day!! HELP!!!!

It needs to be 3 cups of salad veggies OR 2 cups of salad veggies and 1 Cup of "other" veggies....

And you can go up to 20 net carbs per day *total carbs - fiber = net carbs*
12-15 of these are veggie carbs
    Have a Beautiful Day

I'm not worried about going up to 20 net carbs. I guess I could eat another cup of salad veggies but that's still not going to put me near my the 12-15 I need to be at. And I can only have another 2 ounces of cheese but that's just another 2 carbs. How am I going to make it to 12??

cream cheese counts with the other cheeses right?

        Re: First Day!! HELP!!!!

The 20 net carbs is a maximum, and of those 20 according to Dr Atkins in DANDR 2002 which we follow here we need to get 'most' of our carbs from the 3 cups of allowed veg. (The 12-15 carbs often mentioned are suggested nowadays by the Atkins company website and some of the later publications but are not in DANDR 2002.)

As you have discovered, 2 cups of lettuce has very little carbs, thus restricting the number of carbs you can allow yourself if you are going to have 'most' of your carbs from veg, so you might need to try having different veg from the salad list.

We have a semi-annual challenge here where people try to get 12-15 net carbs from their 3 cups of induction-legal veg, so it can be done!!

So depending on how many carbs you are getting from the veg you choose, you may not get anywhere near the 20 net carb maximum.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

I see your point and I looked at the list really closely again. I can tell I'm going to have to learn to love some veggies I've probably never even tried.

Btw, are canned green peas ok? I see peas on the list but it says "edible podded" and I don't even know what that is referring to... But they've got a high net carb count so that could make up alot for me if I can eat them!

            Hi,

I'm pretty certain canned peas aren't OK, although I'll have to have yet another look at my book to be sure! Check the label, as I know some canned peas have the dreaded sugar in them! I think the 'edible podded' might refer to mange-tout?

              Re: First Day!! HELP!!!!

I googled it and found that it seems to refer to sugar snap peas and snow peas. My canned peas do NOT have sugar in them but I'd still like to know if they are alright to eat right now...since I don't have my copy of the book yet. ?

                Re: First Day!! HELP!!!!

                Hi again,

I had the feeling that canned peas - as they are sort of 'fully formed' - belong in the legumes category as peas, beans etc., but I'm not absolutely sure - I may have dreamt it! (I have had a few food dreams since being on Atkins, tee-hee!)

I found this thread - which talks a bit about 'edible podded' peas - I think the first picture - of the snow peas, is what I would call mange-tout.

Not much help on the canned peas - sorry - hopefully someone will be along soon to help you out.

                    Re: First Day!! HELP!!!!

i have some salad suggestions for ya. instead of just eating 2 cups of just lettuce at once, try having 2 small salads, one at lunch another at dinner. you don't have to have just plain lettuce, try adding some other veggies to it. cucumbers, tomatoes, broccoli, bell peppers, mushrooms, and onions are all great additions to any salad and have higher carb counts than you get from just the lettuce alone. i like my salads to have a lot of color, so i add all kinds of veggies to it. i love shredded cheese on my salads too. if you don't like the store bought dressings, you could use vinegar and oil, or even a little mayo or sour cream. if you just don't like dressings period, then a plain salad is fine.

jicama and pumpkin are also great veggies with a little higher carb count. i like to add a little cinnamon and splenda to my pumpkin and have it for either breakfast or a dessert. jicama can be a little hard to find, but we have a international market close that carries them. you can cut jicama up like a potato and make fries with it. this morning i used my cheese grater and made jicama hash browns for breakfast.....they were very tasty. jicama is not bad raw either. i love it as a substitute for a potato.

                    hope this helps.

Pat * studyinscarlet Thank you! This helps me...the answer on canned peas is helpful definitely.

moniegail ~ I appreciate your suggestions on how to vary my salads with other veggies that have higher carb counts. See, I was NEVER one to eat salads before. Since I hate dressing and really didn't care for lettuce that much, I just never bothered, but I'm learning a new way of life, right?

I appreciate your suggestions very much. I have thought about jicama -heard about it various places. I have a friend who lives in Monterrey, Mexico and she snacks on it all the time and she isn't even lo-carb'ing! I might try pumpkin...I think I'd have to cook it first though - you don't eat the pumpkin raw do you?

i buy the canned pumpkin and then add the splenda and spices then microwave it a few seconds just until warm. just make sure you get regular canned pumpkin not pumpkin pie filling. also another thing i like to add to my pumpkin is a little cream cheese. i fix the pumpkin as mentioned above and then add the cream cheese straight out of the fridge. it cools it down a bit and is kinda like a pumpkin pudding. very yummy!!!!! cures any sweet tooth i might have that could cause me to go off plan and eat junk food and sugary treats.

Jicama is my favorite salad vegetable!! I LOVE LOVE LOVE the stuff. I eat it plain, I cut it into match sticks and put it on my salads. I've made chopped "salads" of jicama and sweet red pepper with this orange flavored olive oil I found. Mmm, it's so yummy.

                            Re: First Day!! HELP!!!!

                            Hi,
I just finished day 5 of induction and I have the same problem; not being able to get in enough carbs from vegetables according to the website. However; as someone said in an earlier post, in the Dr. Atkins book it does say eat 3 cups of salad veggies per day, or 2 cups of salad veggies and one cup of the "other" veggies, which is what I've been doing. I do try and pick ones that are higher in carbs, like onions. 1/4 cup raw are 2.8 carbs and I usually cut up one half a cup raw and then use them to saute and put in my morning omelette or on top of steak. If you can tolerate a half cup, (which actually cooks down small) you are getting 5.6 grams of carbs from just the onions.
Peppers also will get you close, and if you aren't a salad person, you can make stuffed green peppers with meat and cheese. and one whole pepper would come out somewhere around 7 grams.
But again, I use the 3 cups of salad or 2 cups salad and one cup "other" guidline from the book and I don't worry too much if I fall a little short from the 12-15 grams.

I'm found out that the Atkins website and the book differ in some things, and so far it seems that most people on the message boards are strictly by the book. The website says you can have some of the Atkins shakes and bars on induction, and the book does not, and it's not recommended. So when you get your book, I think I would use that for a guideline rather than too much of what you find on the website.

Also, if you haven't tried the oopsie rolls yet, I just tried them today and made a turkey, tomato, mayo and lettuce "sandwich" and I was very suprised at how good it was. The recipe is here on the site somewhere, but if you don't find it let me know and I can post it. Sorry such a long post, but I just wanted to share my info! Jen
