  • South Beach Diet Steak Sauce

My mom is doing the South Beach Diet while I'm doing Atkins. She's a buddhist and trying not to eat the amounts of meat I am on Atkins, anyway. She has this South Beach Diet Steak Sauce and the Nutrition Facts say

    1 Tbsp
    Calories 5
    Total Fat 0g
    Cholesterol 0mg
    Sodium 230mg
    Total Carbohydrate 1g
    Dietary Fiber 0g
    Sugars <1g
    Protein 0g

Ingredients: Tomato Puree (Water, Tomato Paste), Vinegar, Apple Cider Vinegar, Salt, Raisin Paste, Spice Caramel Color, Dried Garlic, Dried Onions, Xanthan Gum, Guar Gum

I'm on my 5th day of induction right now, and a sauce of any kind would be nice. But the weight loss is more important to me so if it would be bad for my diet or slow down progress I won't use it. I just thought I'd seek approval from the wise ones here before I try it. I tasted a tiny dab and it's pretty good, tastes like A1, similar consistency too.

    23/M
    Starting Weight - 235 Pounds [08.01.08]

    1st Goal - 229 Pounds [Reached 08.06.08]
    2nd Goal - 220 Pounds [Reached 08.20.08]
    3rd Goal - 211 Pounds
    4th Goal - 199 Pounds
    Final Goal - 185 Pounds

I highlighted the ingredient which makes it off limits for Induction. Remember during Induction you eat "only what's on the list".

By the way, I moved this thread out of the Food Chat Forum because other Induction folks might benefit from it.

Also, exactly how much meat are you eating? During Atkins, only 30% of our total daily caloric intake is from protein. Atkins is a high fat diet, so the majority of our calories come from that. I'm only cautioning you because PLENTY of people make the mistake of thinking Atkins is high protein and we should be eating alot of protein. Excessive dietary protein, according to Dr. Atkins, is converted to sugar by our liver and any excess of that is stored as fat.

I had been eatting tons of chicken and salmon, mixing it up with the occasional stake. I'm going to eat some hotdogs right now. But is the sauce okay to use after induction then? Steaks would be a lot better for me if I could use it. This is my 5th day on induction so far and I've lost about 5 pounds.

Once you get to the rung of OWL where you can eat raisins, you would be able to eat this. I think the best way to determine if you can eat something is to look at your induction list (plus lists for any part of owl you may be on) side by side with the ingredients. If anything on the ingredients is at a higher rung than you are currently on, then you won't be able to eat that food. I'm not sure what rung raisins are on, as I am in extended induction week 2, but someone else may be able to help with that part Great job on the weight loss so far!

I hope you're exaggerating with the "tons" description! Again, Atkins is high FAT, not high protein. You don't need to eat "tons" of protein (or fat) during Atkins at all.

Be careful with those hotdogs---many hotdogs contain ingredients that are not appropriate for Atkins, such as 'dextrose', 'corn syrup solids', 'food starch', etc.

As for the steak sauce.....I'm wondering if you use it to mask the natural taste of the steak. If that's the case, then perhaps you should eat a protein that you do enjoy eating without a strong flavored sauce? When I was a vegetarian, I knew many veggies who, as children, used to drown their animal proteins in ketchup because they simply couldn't stand the taste of animal protein.

Anyhow, there is something called "Montreal Steak Seasoning", it's a salt-based herb and spice mixture that contains legal ingredients. You might want to look into that if you're looking to change the flavor of the steak.

Re: South Beach Diet Steak Sauce

If you are worried about salt, Mrs. Dash makes one that has very simmilar flavors to Montreal Steak Seasoning. (I think Montreal is Mccormicks?) Just make sure to look at the ingredients (if you don't choose the montreal because like Megs said it is legal) and make sure they don't have sugar in the ingredients because often it isn't enough to register on the nutrition facts but it is still there...
