  • Aspartame On Induction

I know people warn of Aspartame potentially slowing down the weight loss for some, but on my first attempt at Atkins I heavily drank Crystal Lite which uses Aspartame and it didn't do anything to slow down my weight loss, so I'm not particularly fearful of the ingredient. I was however wondering if its okay to have on induction? I'm on my 6th day and have lost 7 pounds so far, and I did have a 32 oz Diet Peach Snapple (With Aspartame) the other day.

Also, products with Aspartame claim to be 0g of Carbs. What should I really treat that as?

The main answer you are bound to get is that Dr Atkins allows Splenda but not aspartame. The other answer is that if it isn't stalling you then you may be okay. You should still treat it to the 3 servings per day of artificial sweeteners though. I would suggest, however, to wait until after induction to have any. Give 100% / Get 100%!!!

As Bonnie Rose mentioned, we are supposed to limit our sweeteners to 3 servings a day (including all drinks and foods that are sweetened) so it looks as if you are exceeding that with your drinks alone. One serving of any sweetened drink is usually stated to be 8 fluid ounces

And as to how many carbs to count for sweetener . . . the packet and granulated jars of sweetener like splenda have added maltodextrose to make it more bulky so it can be used as a substitute for sugar in equal amounts in recipes which for splenda adds 24 carbs per cup (16 tablespoonsworth) so you need to count 0.5 carbs per teaspoon, but the liquid sweeteners used by most manufacturers are claimed to have zero carbs.

Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!
