Unfortunately, there's very few things in this world we can eat without monitoring quantity. Sugar Free gum made with artificial sweetener is fine, for the most part, but you have to keep in mind that you only get 3 servings of sweetener per day and would have to count your gum.
There is also Sugar Free gum made with sugar alcohols, which pose a whole other problem involving discrepencies with carb counts/absorption and moderate to severe gastrointestinal distress.
For the most part mints would follow the same line. However, I know many people chew gum and it's rarely a problem as long as you don't go overboard. Extra and Trident are popular sugarfree brands.
I chew Extra bubble gum (sugar-free)...quite a bit actually because I quit smoking back in May. I started Atkins mid-July 2008 (due to weight gain from quitting smoking) and I had to have some sort of gum. I have lost about 10lbs. so far...and the gum has not been a problem for me. I chew maybe 5 pieces a day. But, as they say each person is different so if the weight doesn't start to come off...give up the gum. I have slowed a little on my weight loss but I have increased the exercise so it may be muscle weight. My clothes are fitting better, so something is working. Good luck to you MrsDRock!
