just wondered what ketostix actually are testing?

    Hi, :wave

Ketones are produced by the liver from fatty acids, which result from the use of body fat being used as fuel instead of sugar. The testing strips can be a good way to see if your in ketosis and in that regard they can be motivating.

But they can also be misleading, only the extra ketones in the blood show up in the tests. Plus not everyone tests positive for ketosis with the test strips though they're in ketosis because ketones can be released through breath and skin. Give them a try if you like but don't get discouraged if you don't see the results of the tests reading positive for ketosis, it doesn't mean your not burning the fat.

Also - check the date on the strips you purchase. I bought some thru the Atkins website and could never get even a slight pink read. Someone on another forum suggested that they go bad so I checked the date and sure enogh - they were almost a year past date. Atkins sent me some new ones (after a bit of a hassle) and they went dark purple immediately. Now I buy them at Target so I can see the expiration date. I love the strips - I love seeing that pink to purple but Peter is right - don't get too wrapped around the color or it can be frustrating and even misleading.

        Hi,

Bayer makes Keto testing strips too, I think a bottle of 50 was $9.99 at CVS which is really cheap. You have to ask the pharmacist for them because they're kept behind the counter - but aren't perscription. Plus they come in a hard plastic bottle (like a vitamin bottle) so they stay fresh and color chart is right on the bottle.

I have to admit that I get far too excited about peeing these days. It's a bit warped.

I got mine from "Allergy free heaven" in Christchurch. They have a website http:www.allergyfreeheaven.co.uk but I dont know if you can order online - try phoning them if not. Postage wont be much I imagine.

Also someone posted a while ago that Boots sold them but the assistant got funny about 'allowing' them to buy them!! So it might be an idea to phone them first to check they have them and in which department rather than just going in.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

I bought mine from the local pharmacy for $21.30 AUD. It was a pack of 100.

I did my first test a couple of hours ago. When I first read the instructions telling me I had to pee in a cup/bowl, my reaction was 'WHAT?!'. *laughs*

Anyhow, my results turned out 'moderate' for Ketone and 'negative' for Glucose. I'm pretty pleased with those results!
It's currently my 5th day on Atkins, and I was beginning to worry about whether I was in the stages of ketosis or not, because I wasn't getting bad breathe. I must be one of the lucky ones.

The Bayer Ketosticks are my favorite.

Most other ketosticks only change 2 or 3 shades. With the Ketosticks you get the gamut of colors, from tan to a dark purple! I love all the pretty colors! Pretty, pretty colors.. :joy
