Is it normal to have sleeplessness?

Wednesday night, i got 7 hours of sleep, less than I usually get. When I woke up thursday morning, i was really fatigued and I went to work, but had to leave early cuz I was so weak and tired. I came back to my dorm and took a 2 hour nap(from 12-2pm). I didn't get into bed again until 230am, and even then I couldn't fall asleep. I tried....and tried. But i was awake! i had energy. I was happy that I had this "new" energy....but why at 230am when i would love to sleep :no??? I finally got to sleep around 330ish.

Now, 4 1/2 hrs later, I'm still wide awake. I woke up at 7 to my ringing phone and I thought "great! i wasn't planning on waking up till 745. i'll just go back to sleep." And I couldn't. I was instantly wide awake and ready to roll! So now its 730ish and I feel like i've slept 10 hours, when I've only slept 4.

Is this normal? Like I said, I'm glad that I have new energy, but if its affecting my sleep cycle (as in reducing the amt of sleep), I know thats not healthy for me. It'll eventually catch up with me and then what do I do? I was wondering if sleeplessness is common or am i just weird???

    Hi Berry, :wave

Insomnia is awful and can be so..so ..sooo frustrating Dr Akins recommends taking 3 mgs of Melatonin and or Valerian root before going to bed.

Melatonin works great for most people, I know for me it knocks me right out. It's available at most health food stores, super markets and pharmacies and isn't expensive. Valerian root also works well. You can also try having a cup of herbal tea before bed, something like chamomile which will relax you....try Celestial Seasonings sleepy time. Just remember to make sure there's no caffeine listed in the ingredients panel.

One way to break Insomnia to get out of bed when you can't sleep. The rule of thumb is if more than 30 minutes has gone by, rather than laying there in anguish which of course makes it worse just get up out of bed and do something, anything read, watch television, write, hang out on the board. When you feel sleepy head back to bed and if you still can;t sleep, out you go and start all over. In this way you can get your sleep cycle back normal and relive the frustration.

The first person on the Atkins Diet was Dr. Atkins himself. He found this burst of energy too. In fact, he found that he didn't need 8 hours of sleep, but only 5.

The weekend is coming up, so you might want to re-set your sleep cycle. I would approach this like you would jet lag--no alcohol or caffeine(neither of which you should be having during Induction anyway), keep hydrated, do light exercise (walk around the block, etc.), and do not go to sleep until your usual bedtime.
