Hi, :wave Well I have started today, and whole heartedly intend to stick with it. My question though is.... Will it take me longer to lose the weight as I am 39(40 next month :sadblinky sob sob) I hear such wonderful things about the weight loss people have achieved but wonder if it because they are younger than me!! Any info will be most welcome, especially those that will boost my moral :yikes . Thank you

Hi!!
Welcome to Atkins!! It is wonderful and you will have a lot of success. My mother is the one who got my interested in Atkins after losing 68 pounds in six months. She is 61, has more eneregy than I do (I am 27), completes more in any given day than I do......and looks great!! So, don't worry......you can do it...you just have to have the midset to stick to it and realize it is not a quick fix......GOOD LUCK!!

First of all ...... welcome toOriginally posted by TickertybooHi, :wave Well I have started today, and whole heartedly intend to stick with it. My question though is.... ha !
Of course I can't speak for everyone here. But my experience is that you CAN lose as quickly as someone who's younger. Right now I've got a friendly little monetary bet going with a co worker of mine over who can lose the most weight. I'm a 48 year old female and he's 22 years old. So far I'm kicking his fanny!
But, that's just my experience and someone else's mileage may vary. I think that the things that are helping me most are dedication, exercise or just plain moving more, and the fact that I don't want to have to pay up! I think that my co worker is pretty much a couch potato and I have an edge over him in that regard.
If today is your first day you're likely to feel kind of icky for the next few days while your body goes through a detox. Those carb demons will be wanting to be fed. But, don't give in! It will pass in a few days and then you'll feel even better than before. It's important to drink, drink, drink plenty of water!
Read the book "Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution". Come here often for information, motivation, and support. Be prepared by keeping low carb foods on hand. Be determined to stick with it! Positive self-talk is also a big help.
I'm sure that you will get plenty of good advice in adition to mine. There are so many helpful, nice people here on the boards.
Good luck and know that YOU CAN DO THIS!

Hi! :wave
Welcome! You've just stepped into the most amazing WOL (way of life) on the Planet.
Don't be concerned about your age, nothing is black and white there are members here in their 50's and 60's who loose weight faster then those half their age. What's important to remember is that is WOE (way of eating) gives you much more than just weight loss. You'll have more energy, lower cholesterol, no more cravings and binges because your insulin level will be even..Plus! a new feeling of energy and an overall improvement in every aspect of your physical and emotional well being.
And at 39 you are hardly old (oh to be 39 again!) You're as old as you feel my friend, and on Atkins one thing is certain you're going to feel younger and healthier and more vibrant than you have in years - Welcome aboard!

Wow what a welcome, thank you x
Thank you so much to all of you who took the time to write a reply. Here I am with water in one hand and determination in the other. I am sure that along the way I will have plenty of questions to ask, although I do have the main book, the recipie book and the carb counter. I am nothing if not prepared. But there is bound to be something that I dont quite 'get' along the way. Firstly how much is a 'cup' of salad or veg. Sorry to sound dim but in the Uk we dont use that term. So if someone could be kind enough to let me know I would appreciate it. thank you again Lisa

Hi :wave from another UK Atkineer here.
It is confusing isnt it - why on earth Dr Atkins chose to use a liquid measuring cup to count how much dry foodstuffs to eat is beyond me :yikes . Scales would be easier, wouldnt they!
but we are stuck with it so . . . several options for us:
1. Get some US measuring cups and use those - www.lakelandlimited.co.uk is one company that sells them.
2. Use a normal measuring jug - one US cup is about 240 mls worth(8.3 UK fluid ounces).
3. Use one of the charts that convert a cupsworth of a food into the equivalent in grams. Several suggestions here in this thread on the main Atkins forum
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!
Check out our Low Carb Recipes website and add to it!!

Welcome! I'm older than you, 54 years old, and have had wonderful success with this WOE. I lost 12 pounds the first 2 weeks and reached goal in just under 7 months. Read the book, drink your water, come here for support and listen to the advice from all the experienced moderators you will meet here. They are all so generous with their support and help.
