  • Yikes!!!!

OKAY I have been eating eggs for breakfast and sometimes on my salad and deviled eggs. Because the book said to eat all the eggs and meat (unprocessed) til satisfied (not bloating) that's what I have been doing.
Just now I looked at the carton and it says they have 1 g of carbs EACH! YIKES!
So I have been screwing up and not eveing knowing I am going over my 20 carbs.

Are there any other thiings out there that you guys have found out (along the way) that would be good tips to share?

I could really use the help here!

    Re: Yikes!!!!

yes eggs do have a carb, in DANDR the carb counter actually lists them as having 0.6g of carbs to be exact. however, i have seen nowhere in the book that says you can eat "all" that you want of any particular thing until you are satisfied.

it does however say eat liberally of combinations of fat and protein, that does not mean to eat all you want of eggs, meat, fish, and poultry. there is a limit of those too. you should strive to reach a ratio of 65% fat, 5% carbs and 30% protein daily during the induction phase. 12-15g of carbs should come from veggies.

to keep track of your daily food intake, check out fitday.com. it's a free site where you can log in your foods and keep track of your numbers so that you'll know for sure that you are not going over your 20 carbs a day.

i can't see how even if you were eating several eggs a day and going over your 20g carbs for the day that it would hurt too bad. if your like most of us, then you are still way under the amount of carbs you used to comsume in a day.

    hope this helps

      Re: Yikes!!!!

      Thanks monie,
I take the book to mean you should eat from all the meat groups as you want to keep yourself from becoming hungry. No, I don't sit and eat an entire dozen eggs, of course. But I do take the book at face value.

Liberally means just that. Here is a definition I have found onine : synonyms LIBERAL , GENEROUS , BOUNTIFUL , MUNIFICENT </I>mean giving or given freely and unstintingly. LIBERAL </I>suggests openhandedness in the giver and largeness in the thing or amount given

That is why I took the book to mean I should choose foods from the MEAT group to keep me satisfied during "snack" attacks or regular meals.

There seems to be so much different on labels on foods than listed in the book or on the carb counter online. I don't even know what the heck to believe.

Today while I was at the store I decided to just look at the Atkins bars. I guess because I am so new to the all I just don't get it. The front of some of them said net 4carbs for example and then when I read the nutrional label there are way over 10 carbs! I was looking forward to some day in the distant future to enjoy something yummy again while others around me have the "sinful" stuff!

Maybe I need to rethink this whole thing altogether.

        Re: Yikes!!!!

To be sure, you WILL learn a LOT if you hang out around the threads here!!!
You can also be sure, labels are not always as they seem, so be aware that quite often they try to lure your in with a smaller number, like rounded down to a "0" for carbs, or a small "per serving" size and there's multiple servings per container you might normally think of as "one" serving. LOL

Things that take longer to eat and are less dense a food than eggs can help you reach satiety after eating less than something like boiled eggs. Your brain could take a few minutes to signal the OK, that's enough; in that time you could easily eat several more eggs (or other dense food). Its harder to do that munching on something like hard pork skins, steamed crab (still in the shell) or a plate of fried gizzards (no flour, of course).

Ain't reading labels an educational experience sometimes?

Live and learn...that's what I say, and read the labels before hand. I've become a label checker like a crazy woman. I'll stand in the isle of the grocery store for a whole 2 minutes reading the labels while traffic is coughing and smiling nicely waiting for me to move...unless it's someone in a hurry and I take my life into my own hands standing there.

              Re: Yikes!!!! KEYTONE STRIPS

Thanks for all the help guys.
I have not cut the eggs out but I have started counting them in with the allowed 20 carbs. So now I can get a better grasp of all the carbs going in. I didn't just sit around eating eggs all day mind you, but I was concerned when the label reached out and slapped me.

Anyway, I finally found the KEYTONE strips and will check daily. Yesterday I was only moderate, two colors down from the top. Is that bad???
I think I might need to go down to 10 carbs during the induction. What do you think? Although I have lost 9 pounds so far (which I know is water weight)

Thanks again for all of your advice.

                Re: Yikes!!!!

                Hi Donna!
Looks like you're already down 7 pounds on your ticker! Congratulations on that!! From one newbie to another, here are a few things I've picked up from this board.

                1. Read the ingredients. Even if the label says something has 0carbs it may actually have .9 carbs. Some labels I've found also say >1 carb.
                2. Make sure you're counting net carbs, which from what I understand is the listed carbs minus the fiber.
                3. Note portion sizes. Perhaps that was why the package you picked up said 4 on the front and 10 on the back? Measure your veggies because it's easy to pile up greens on a salad. Also I was guilty of pouring too much cream into my tea....it pays to take the time to measure!

From someone who has never stuck to an eating plan or diet for more than 3 consecutive days....I'm on day 7 and still feeling driven to stick to it. Check in to this board often for tips & inspiration and be sure to post your progress!

You CAN do this and YOU are worth it!! Good luck!

                  MSUCHIO - Thanks for that!
I was wondering about the net carb thing after looking at the Atkins bars yesterday in the store and looking forward to WAY down the road getting to have one! Woo Hoo! Now I don't feel so bad about the ones with 14 carbs but 9 g fiber!
