  • atkins tortillas and Induction?

    HI

I have been on Atkins for one week and was doing great and had gone into ketosis. I read the sample induction diet on the website which included 1 atkins tortilla on some days- well I added 1 on both Saturday and Sunday and now am completly out of ketosis! I know the book says no bread but the website says the tortillas are OK- has anyone else had this problem

Recently there have been disturbing discrepancies at the Atkins site when it comes to the Acceptable Foods list, and what they're offering up as 'Induction Friendly'. Grains are not on the List, and yet they say you can eat things like their tortillas.... :confused There are other contradictions as well...it's been very frustrating.

On this board, we advocate following Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution (version 2002, DANDR for short) and eating fresh, natural foods off of the Acceptable Foods list, and according to the Rules of Induction.
If you're eating these in the amounts recommended, staying within your limits, you can rest assured you're doing the right thing.

I'm not saying low-carb tortillas are the kiss of death..lol (It could be your ketostix are innaccurate, which happens fairly frequently from what I hear) but there's a time and place for them..namely the grain rung in OWL.

Try using a lettuce leaf to wrap your fillings in...it works great, and you don't have to be concerned about it. :yes

Thanks- Yes, it is frustrating!!!!!!! I guess I will now have to start over

I changed nothing else in my diet other than adding those tortillas and my keto stix are brand new- I am positive it was the tortillas- I should have known it was too good to be true!! I do not understand why they are posting contradictory advice on the website.................

I wouldn't worry about having to start over...just carry on, but go by DANDR rather than the website. :yes

I emailed Atkins and was told that they wanted to offer people alternatives, or some such thing, but they gave no real explanation why their recommendations were of things that were not on the List.

          I do--money! lol!

Hehehehe! She is right, I just learned too to stay away from these products because they can cause problems from weight gain to return of cravings. So I don't go near any products anymore, including Atkins stuff. Also, don't rely on those ketostix too much. For a lot of people, they are inaccurate or people don't understand the science behind them and think they are out of ketosis when they aren't. Ketostix can be a useful tool but Atkins is do-able without the expense of using them and you will still be in ketosis. Depending on the time of day, how much water you drank, how much fat you ate, wether you exercised before or after eating, etc, depend on the accuracy of the ketostix. Thats why I don't bother; too many factors to know if they are accurate or not but to each his own! lol! Don't start over, you are still low carbing, just kill the torts and you will be ok. :nod And to be safe, I would stay away from all and any low carb products while you are on induction. I had to realize that I could get problems, too, so I gave them up and I am glad I did.

the ketostix are more a psychological movitivating factor for me-it may be a crutch-but was helping me get through induction-I loved seeing my ketostix turn purple! LOL - so when I woke up Monday morning to an all brown ketostix I was really bummed!!! Anyways......I agree with you-stay away from the low-carb stuff at least during induction- did not work for me-Maybe someone else reads this prior to induction and will not make the same mistake I did.......I never should have looked at that induction menu on the website!!!

Moochie is 100% correct, the information is very misleading.

I'm registered at Atkins.com much like most of the folks here are I imagine. It's more of a market place subtly designed to sell products than the strictly the health based and information source I remember it being.

Atkins isn't a non profit organization so I imagine they have a slippery slope to climb when trying to balance what is truly in the benefit of the Atkins dieter against the companies own need to survive and profit.

My read on the whole picture is a strict and clean induction no bad carbs and healthy safe carbs only from veggies - period. No food substitutes, they cause stalls and ignite cravings.

As I said in a previous post if we were all alcoholics talking about the new alcohol free vodka there isn't a Dr or addiction counselor who wouldn't consider it sheer madness.

(Except of course if they had money to make from the sale of it.)

that is too bad ..... it will be to their own detriment imo.....This is not the first time I have done the induction stage- I did it 2 years ago by the book and it was tremendous success for me- I lost alot of weight and honestly that is what kept me going....I remember thinking there is no way I can eat cheese, pepperoni, bacon,etc...and lose weight!!! Yet I did- and I am the kind of person(relatively no self-discipline/control nor patience) that after 2 weeks of induction(including excrutiating headaches from caffeine withdrawal- had a case + a day of diet mountain dew) had I not seen immediate results I probably would have given up. It changed my eating habits-and for the last 2 years I have been relatively caffeine-free- one cup of coffee in am -though now a diet-rite addict and have keep most of the weight off- I did let it go past the 5 pounds Atkins recommends and now I am doing Atkins to get rid of the extra 15 before it gets out of control! I know I would not have had the same results adding those low carb products and therefore would probably not have stayed with the program- oh well - maybe it does not affect everyone the same way...........
