I can't find a true SF ham. Most have dextrose in their cure. Frick's Ham is at least comepltely "all natrual" They use sugar but it must be in TINY amount b/c it's like 7th ont he ingredient list...whereas msot list dextrose as 2nd or 3rd. So That's what I eat for ham......The alternative is to buy a whole raw ham and cook it and freeze appropriate portions.
I have never seen a sugar free jerky...sugar is a main ingredient in the cures.
Thanks.. A friend just told me about her 'meat dehydrater'.. She says she makes delicious beef jerky for her boys, without sugar!
I'm cooking a ham right now..!
The most popular brand around here probably is Smithfield (which could be what Momma's "SF" refers to). That's probably in part because they're about 50 miles down the road. Other common brands are Gwaltney and Luter's. They all make a salt-cured ham, so you need to like salty ham.
They're pretty expensive as far as hams go. If you can't get them locally, you can find internet vendors to ship them, but then you're looking at even more expense for shipping perishables. If you want to go that route, Google "Smithfield ham."
You can buy them cooked or uncooked. Even though they're salt-cured, the cooked variety may still have a brown sugar or other carb-heavy glaze. Of course you could "skin" the glaze, but I don't know how deeply the sugar penetrates the meat.
