  • Mayonnaise and other newbie questions

Just starting Atkins today for the first time. I've got DANDR and read it cover to cover, but there are still some things I am unsure of.

Is mayonnaise on the liberal food list?

Can I eat processed meats such as sausages and donner kebab meat (not sure if you have donner meat in the US - Brit gal here I'm afraid!!)?

Must I eat 3 cups of veg a day (not a big fan)?

    Thank you all.

Hi there! Welcome to Atkins World.
Yes, you may have Mayo liberally. Most here seem to use Hellmanns. I asked the same question a few months ago about Mayo and how much. I was told, for instance, to use the amt. that I would ordinarily use on egg salad etc. Obviously, you can not eat cupfuls a day. (Duh)

Yes, you MUST eat your veggies. Not only would you be depriving yourself the valuable nutrients, but they make up your carbs for the day.
Veggies will also help you in the bathroom....if you know what I mean. (Wink-wink)

Processed meat is not the wisest choice. You may have bacon and sausage if it is not cured in sugar. Because they are heavily salted, be aware if you are retaining water.

Also drink mucho water and then some. It really helps.

What the heck is donner kebab meat????

      Hi Tracy! :wave

Welcome aboard! Having read the book you really have given yourself an extra edge towards success. Far to many people attempt Atkins without taking the time to learn what makes this WOL (way of life) so magnificent in every respect.

You'll not only lose the weight, but enjoy a profound improvement in your overall health - physical as well as emotional well being - so congratulations! I know you're going to great.

As far as the Mayo is concerned use it all you want providing it's sugar free. So read the labels and make sure there is absolutely no sugar. If you have trouble finding a brand in the UK making your own Mayo is really quite easy, and tasty too! Let me know if you need a quick recipe and I'll post one for you.

The same applies to processed meats or as well call them here in the states "Deli" you have to be very careful that they contain no sugar or carbs. When in doubt pass until you can get the Info you need. If Boars Head is sold in the UK in my opinion it's the absolute best. They have tons of wonderful meats and cheeses all carb, sugar and filler free. you can check out their site at www.boarshead.com

I'm not familiar with the brand Donner but if they have a number you can call to verify the ingredients you might give that a try. As for the Veggies...sorry kiddo it's a big YES! you must eat them, after all that's where you're getting most of your 20 grams of carbs from.

The good news is you're not alone lots of us aren't keen on veggies but you really can learn new ways to prepare them that will change your entire perspective. Check out the recipe forum for ideas.

you have everything you need from the book to a determined heart to succeed on Atkins and I know you will. Plus the support and encouragement you'll find here on this site is invaluable, and it's here for you 24/7 365 days a year. So on that note I say Welcome and can't wait to learn about the amazing success which no doubt you're going to have.

Doner Kabab meat is the same meat in Gyros. I know it has a lot of salt and is a mixture of meats: lamb, beef and ??. I personally wouldn't eat it as I believe it is processed and has added fillers.

We ate doner's when we were stationed in Germany. Back then had never even heard of Atkins....the bread is different that Gyros and they were YUMMY..definately not induction friendly!

welcome to the board. Great advice so far.

About those veggies you arr laying the foundation for a lofe tome of eating that is going to keep you healthier and smaller. Those veggies are a very big part of it. None of us got the way we started out from loving veggies but your tastes will change as your taste buds are no longer bomnarded with sugar. In a feew weeks veggiew will taste sweet to you. In the mean time you can sause them with cheese purree them and hid them in your meat add a few to your eggs and have an omlette or frtattasp?

Also remember to space them out so you aren't getting a large bolus of carbs at any one meal.

          Happy low carbing.

Thank you all - great advice.

Will try harder with the dreaded veg - although mushrooms are a fav of mine so I'll start with those.

Just had tuna and mayonaise for my lunch and enjoyed it even without the bread to make it a sandwich!!

The donner kebab meat is a nasty mix up of lamb and spare body parts of animals all mixed together. It is an essential part of a boozy night out and must only be eaten under the influence of alcohol!! Saying that though it is quite tasty and I was just wondering if it would be allowed - I am thinking I will stay well clear though.

I've got another question, re: drink, but I'll start a new thread for that one.

            Thank you all again

              Hello and welcome Tquarter :wave

I would be very sceptical about kebab meat, it would contain all the nasty
offal bits that do contain carbs, also you may find that in mixing up of the
meat, breadcrumbs and binding agents may be added in addition to flavours that make them taste like meat.

Also you really have no idea what quality the meat is, or what part you are eating, from earholes to arseholes...umm yum yum??

You will be pleased that you joined, it's a great personal challenge and the support is amazing.

              Good luck :hug

Hmm... :confused I didn´t know you had to eat the veggies every day(I haven´t finished reading the book yet). To be honest I´ve only had some sellery since I started with this woe one week ago. I´ll have to change that now, but the problem is the only veggies I like that are allowed is broccoli and cauliflower with butter...yum.

Just in case you havent seen it yet - here is a list of 'acceptable foods' for induction eating which details how much veggies and which varieties are allowed.

Read through the list and see if there are any you do like as well as those you mentioned - even rhubarb counts!!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
Take a look at the thread from the latest Veggie Challenge to see how others manage it!

Check out our Low Carb Recipes website and add to it!!
