  • Diet Dinks and Milk

Thanks to all those who have already helped me today.

Not being a drinker of tea or coffee - my usual drinks include milk and fizzy pop.

I know milk is a no-no during induction, but is it allowed after the first two weeks?

Obviously I'm gonna have to drink lots of water but just for a change is diet pop allowed? I can't get my head around sweetners!!

    Many thx

Milk can be added back into your diet during OWL---personally, unless you have a high CCLL, I don't think milk should be added back until Pre-Maintainance.

Soft drinks are acceptable, provided they do not contain aspartame. They also do not count towards your daily water requirement.

hmm. i can't really comment on the milk since we don't ever drink it in our house (myself and my son are lactose intolerant and it give us the runs). but I can comment on the diet pop. try to avoid aspartame like the plague. it can stall you and give you nasty carb cravings. look for diet drinks sweetened with Splenda instead. Make sure to read the nutritional labels and count the splenda towards your daily sweetener limit.

The Diet Rite brands are pretty good but I have a can of pop maybe once or twice a week now, they all seem too sweet to me so water became my drink of choice. Unreal, never would have guessed that would happen. I used to live on caffeine free diet coke for years!

Tracey, I see you are in Leeds. I am in Wiltshire in the south west.

Unfortunately we have no diet drinks in the UK that are safe for us to drink all due to the sweetener called "aspartame" which is a known staller in a number of people.

But honestly you will get used to water. I was like you when I first started and thought the same as you about the "ghastly" stuff.

But now I actually find myself craving it.

          Good luck

i agree with Rich about the water - before long if you react like many of us here you will find you want to drink lots of plain water!
Occasionally for a treat I splash out on a bottle of sparkling water if I fancy something different but really I dont miss the several cans a day of diet coke I used to drink!
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

              Sweetners

One of the best components of induction is learning to live without sugar.
It just isn't good for us. There is some valuable information in the Atkins books about sugar and sugar substitutes.

Unfortunately, not all sugar substitutes are good for us either.

I used to be crazy about equal, but dr. atkins does not recommend it. I then switched to splenda, which is recommended but it tasted weak to me until i'd been using it for awhile. now, after being on induction for awhile, it tastes just fine and you can bake with it. you will find, if you stick to induction that your palate will change and you will no longer crave sugar the way you used to do.

another alternative is stevia, and i finally figured out where to get it in my town. stevia is an herb that is sweeter than sugar but it doesn't raise your blood sugar. i use one packet in my cup of decaf or tea and I love it.
