Sweet snacks (E.g low carb Kitkat) allowed?

  • Sweet snacks (E.g low carb Kitkat) allowed?

    Hi there guys,

    This is my first post and about my third attempt on Atkins as I want to shape up (Or is that shape down?) for a holiday coming up.

    My main problem is my sweet tooth, I've been trying to kick it, drinking plenty of water but always crave sometihing after a meal.

    I ordered a bunch of sweet things from a low carb website which apparently have low or no amounts of sugar and was wondering If I'm actually allowed these during induction.

    They work out the net carb content by minusing the amount of Polyols from the carb count. But is this right? What are Polyols? All I know about them is that every packet says not to eat too many as they can cause diarrhea. Are they actually included in my daily carb intake?

    I have sweets, biscuitty type things, lollys and other things to try and urge me away from sugar. All of these products apparently have zero or very low carbs once the polyol carb count has been deducted.

    I also bought a massive box of the Nestle low carb Kitkat that they released. These taste just like the normal kitkats but have only 4g net carbs after Polyols. I believe the 4g is still sugar though. Is this ok, aslong as I don't go over the 20g alowace in induction? Or should I be avoiding all sugar? It seems silly that I wouldn't be allowed the low carb Kitkat when it is marketed at Atkins dieters.

    I just don't want to go digging into these tasty sugar replacements and find out I'm doing it all wrong.

    sorry to say but this stuff isn't allowed on induction...especially the stuff that has any sugar in it...you need to stick to only the foods on the acceptable list and put these away until you move out of induction. the whole idea of the two weeks is to break this addiction to sweets. you will never do that if you keep feeding your craving for sweets. do you have the book? if not you need to pick it up and get reading...it's very important to doing this diet right. your carbs should come mainly from your veggies.

      In addition to not be allowed on Induction, you'll counter one of the main goals of Induction ... that is the elimination or reduction of cravings. Obviously, by stock piling, you have some sort of craving issue.

      Whether you reward a craving with real sugar or fake sugar, it will have the same impact. Eliminating the "I crave, therefore I shall eat" behavior is one that has to be broken in order to have long term results. Otherwise, plan a life of yo-yo dieting.

      Sorry if this seems a bit harsh, but it is the truth.

        Hi brewskyboy,

        Welcome to Atkins! the most successful, amazing WOL (way of life in the world)

        The foods your talking about, the low carb kit kat bars and other sweets are not only not allowed on Atkins - especially during the Induction phase - they will continue to trigger your cravings which will of course continue to make you eat the wrong foods.

        But what really concerns me is this:

        You've tried Atkins three times and failed three times. I say this with support and kindness and no judgment but don't you think it's time to finally do it correctly?

        In order to that the first thing you need to do is read the book "Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution" known around here as simply DANDR. Without the knowledge and insight the book affords you, make no mistake - you will continue to fail.

        It's just not an option, it's that critical. The book will help you to understand why and how this WOL (a way of live) Has such a profound change in the way we eat and view ourselves.

        And it isn't easy it takes work and determination. Having made this great step of coming to the board and posting is wonderful. It's a great first step but you have some preparing to do.

        It's important to understand that this WOL (way of life) isn't a quick fix or a fad, it's been around for over 30 years and it works, in every possible, conceivable way. Improved health and a profound new sense of energy and overall well being. But again, this is way of life not a diet. When you set specific goals for specific amounts of weight to lose within a specific time frame all your doing is imposing pressure on yourself which leads to failure. Your success on Atkins can't be measured that way, it never could be and it never will be.

        As for your success, it's all right here - that is, if you want it bad enough, if you want to be the weight you've dreamed of and have the kind of health and stamina that will last you a lifetime. All you have to do is get busy.

        Read the book, from that point you'll know if Atkins is the right path for you.

          I learned so much about myself during Induction, and the biggest thing I learned was that food was my comfort, my solace, my celebration, my reward...it played a much bigger role in my life than just a sweet taste in my mouth.
          I have been known to say, more than once "I NEED chocolate in the house or I start to get anxious!", and I meant every word.

          Make the committment to do a clean 14 Day Induction. Eat from the Acceptable Foods List and follow the Rules as laid out in DANDR, drink your water. Those sweets will be there if you choose to add them back in, but for 14 days, make the conscious choice to turn to Induction legal foods (eggs, pepperoni with cheese, veggies and ranch or blue cheese dip..tons of ideas for snacks and meals in the food forums!).

          You're going to go through Induction Flu as your body goes through withdrawal from sugar, caffiene etc. You will feel unwell, headachy and irritable for a few days...it's just how it is, sorry to say. That was a prime time for me to turn to chocolate, but I toughed it through. And quite honestly, if your body is screeching for you to give it a sugar rush, giving yourself something artificially sweetened isn't going to do it for you, and you'll be even more miserable.

          There's a lot to learn with Atkins, and as I said, I learned SO much about myself in those first months, and I'm glad I said goodbye to the sweets.
          I have 'legal' sweets that I make at home, and they're sure better than anything I ever used to buy, that's for sure!! :yes The best part is, no guilt!

            Lordy. I wish I had never read there were low carb kitkats LOLOL.

            brewskeyboy, you've gotten great advice! Killing the sweet tooth is difficult but once you do it feels SO good.. don't be like me though and go right back on sweets. recipe for disaster! :no

              Gosh, I know just what y'all mean. We keep major boxes of chocolate at my house, including the sugar-free ones....With 23g of carbs in them...only 21 if I take out the fiber :tounge

                  I think this is the root of your problem. Sweets or no sweets, if you view "The Atkins Diet" as an actual DIET and not a way of life, you are sabotaging yourself before you even start.

                  Does this sound familar............

                  "I want to hurry up & drop 15 pounds before _______(insert holiday, special occasion or event)__________, so I'm gonna go on Atkins."

                  This is the way of thinking that had me on the weight yo-yo for 4 years. So what happens when you do this? You begin the first phase of Atkins. You drop alot of weight initially. Then you are happy b/c you dropped the weight and you go back to eating "normal". Then you gain the weight all back. Maybe 5 pounds more. Then you have another holiday, special occasion or event so you begin the first phase of Atkins. You drop alot of weight initially. Then you are happy b/c you dropped the weight and you go back to eating "normal". Then you gain the weight all back. Maybe 10 pounds more this time.

                  Anyways, you get my point. If any of this sounds familar, please understand that once you get past the first phase of Atkins, you will begin to change EVERYTHING about yourself. The way you used to view food, the cravings, the habits. EVERYTHING. But until you adopt The Atkins WAY OF LIFE, you'll only be on a "diet" that will cause your body harm. And it is not the Atkins approach. The constant yo-yoing causes your metabolism to become irritable and eventually, you'll find it very difficult to lose weight altogether.

                  Please give yourself a fair chance at success this time. The rules of Induction are laid out for very specific reasons, and are proven successful if followed to a tee. Get you a copy of Dr. Atkins New Diet Revolution, 2002. Read it and follow it exactly. If you do, I guarantee you a successful weight loss journey and a permanently healthy lifestyle!
