  • Successful Induction!

Lost 6.3lb, 7.75 inches WOO HOO!

Totally, totally happy with my results!

    What I learned:

    1. Salt, not sugar is my thing. Read labels, eg, tomato sauce, or make my own. Cravings for salty food (crackers, chips, fritoes) can be quelled with more water!

    2. Aspartame is suspect. Eliminating it for now. On Day 8 I made a key lime pie w/SF Jello, ate 3/8 of it over Day 8-10, scale did not move until Day 13. It's a little challenging for the scales not to move but other signs were positive, ie clothes were getting bigger all the time, so was aspartame really stalling me? Nevertheless...aspartame is out for now. Ditto for vodka drinks...maybe after I've met my 10% goal, to celebrate! (See Item 5)

    3. Scales often show no change for 2-3 days at a time, then a 2+ pound loss.

    4. I love to cook. Want to make it a habit like anything else I do to take care of myself. Want to continue to take care of myself in the face of stress, deadlines, not feeling so hot. Want to share my culinary inventions with friends and family, maybe they will stop saying "Atkins is boring and tedious, meat and fat, ugh"...

    5. A holistic approach includes social occasions that are celebrated with food and wine or spirits. I want to practice what Dr. Atkins preaches: "I equate healthy eating with gastronomic pleasure." See also Item 4.

    6. Getting right back on plan after a detour, deviation, or mistake feels so much better than beating myself up for days while allowing all kinds of garbage past my lips.

    7. I like how my hands look with the tendons on the back of them showing, haven't seen that it years!

    8. My average daily carb count (recorded Day 7-13) was 18.9g. Some days it was 12g, one day it was 24g, one day it was 32g! when I overdid it with legal foods. Most of my carbs came from veg, average 3-4g/day came from heavy cream and cheese.

    9. Cheese is constipating. Use as a condiment.

Notes: Out of deference to those who preach and practice "clean induction", I'm calling this Successful Induction. When I started I already knew I had 2 social occasions that would detour me on Day 5-6. Also I had a deadline to meet, with school starting tomorrow, to use the 2 weeks I had to practice so I'd be ready for school and not blow it. To me it was more important to get started, get rolling, than it was to do it "clean". Some will call it cheating, some will call it fooling myself. I call it learn by doing.

Thanks a million to Dr. Atkins and to all you wonderful, courageous Atkineers!

ON MY WAY! FEELING EMPOWERED! HAVING FUN!

Thanks, blueberrylady, yes it's true this successful induction has given me a huge self esteem boost. I feel radiantly happy, and I'm going to ride this wave as far as it will take me! BTW how come your name, do you grow blueberries, or are they your fave fruit? Also, the quote you have about the quiet courage at the end of the day is one I've really taken to heart, I've repeated it to myself lots of times...

Thank you, thank you...it looks like you are having a long term success, from the info in your siggy...

Curious, as I am trying to decide whether to OWL, Modified OWL, or Extended Induction...what prompts you to stay on extended induction? I am honestly a little challenged by the idea of adding more carbs since I am doing so well with how things are for now...it's just now feeling like a solid routine, one I don't have to think too much about...just curious, if you feel like sharing, what your thinking is on this issue...

                        Re: Successful Induction!

I would suggest not staying on induction for much longer, as with more weight to lose you will find it easier to tell if adding the extra net carbs and different foods are still letting you lose weight or stopping weightloss.

Most people find their weightlosses slow anyway when they have maybe 20 or so pounds left to lose, so delaying OWL till then is not necessarily an advisable thing to do and makes it hard to know if your loss has slowed because you are approaching goal or adding more net carbs.

Doing OWL correctly and testing many foods to see how they affect you can take several months, and Dr Atkins did say we should lose our last 5-10 pounds very slowly 'almost imperceptibly' on premaintenance phase.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

I'm glad you like the quote. I live by it. Yes, to answer your question, we own a pick-your-own blueberry farm. The season is just winding down and we will close in a little over a week. I have to tell you, it's been a challenge resisting those sweet little things but I only had one slip after handling literally tons of them. But the pears and grapes were even harder because I like them more than the berries. Now when the kiwis ripen, well, we'll see!LOL

I'm staying on induction too. Everynow and then I might have something no on the induction menu (soy milk or something) but I have put my goal at 160 lbs and I plan on staying on induction until I come very close to that. Then as I work my way up the rungs and still drop a bit more they will be bonus pounds. And if I don't lose anymore then at least I hit my goal! I am comfy here and not ready to move on to a step when I haven't even learned this one all that well yet.

                              Re: Successful Induction!

OMG blueberry lady, I am stunned that you were able to resist those lovely berries during harvest! You are determined!

Elizellen, I like the simplicity in your explanation. I'm tempted to do as others do, and glad to see that it's working for them, to stay on induction for extended time. But honestly for me I don't think it will work for a couple of reasons. One is, I think to do so will reinforce the (for me) bad old way of thinking, "I'll just do this until I lose x pounds and then I'll be able to maintain"...huh? how does that work? I ask me.

Dr. Atkins' logic makes so much sense to me. And I also have in mind the info I got on this site about losing more than 10% of body weight, how doing so prompts other hormones to kick in to play to make you regain the weight you've lost. Here, I'm trying to talk myself out of the quick-weight-loss thought process.

A second reason is, for this to be a lifetime change I'm going to have to develop a whole repertoire of things to make the menu choices well rounded. Maybe I'll be one of those who can tolerate low carb bread that you buy off the shelf, or maybe I'll have to find a controlled carb alternative that I make at home. How will I know unless I experiment in my "laboratory" ie my own body?

So this is me, deciding to go on to OWL, by adding 5g more of carb to my baseline of 19g, 3x/week. Originally I was daunted by the idea of taking "several weeks or months" to test a bunch of different foods. But now I think I've got myself convinced to be more patient, go through the process, and make ultimate success more likely.

What would ultimate success be? Like the Dr. says in the book, having a healthy, delicious, rewarding way of eating that I don't have to think about very much. That's done by experience.

So here's another question for you, Elizellen, I've read the OWL forum but I still am not certain how it works. Let's say this week I want to add more tomatoe, to my salad or just slices for a snack, or as tomato sauce. I eat this food 3x this week and see if it changes my pace. Then do I test another veg or do I advance to dairy and test one of those? Is the idea here similar to allergy testing, where you introduce a food back in to see if there is a bad reaction? Do I keep going up the ladder each week or do I stay at a rung for a while? I'm just not clear about the mechanics of this...

And from what list do I choose the new veggie? How about some of the starchier ones like squashes (mmmmmmmmmmmm..my fave), o i get it, that's rung 8....
