    Hello Everyone

I am about to embark, for the first time ever, on the Atkins diet. I REALLY need to do this, I am terrible at diets :sadblinky

Could someone give me a kickstart by giving me an idea of a weeks menu? I need to go shopping and clear my fridge/cupboards, and could do with an example diet so that I can get it clear in my head.

Thanks everyone, this looks like a great forum, can't wait to get started.

Plus, I get hungry REALLY quickly and eat many times during the day - any tips on keeping this habit at bay?

    Thanks all

Welcome Moorf! You will find a lot of support here!
First of all on the example menu.. in the Atkins Forum Index scroll down and there is a whole section on menus, and a review my menu and all kinds of stuff to look at. What you really need is some motivation, you need to come on here everyday and look around, look at some of the journals and before and after pics after the recipe section. You can do this! This is the funnest best nutritional plan you will ever do. I highly recommend measuring yourself, the scale can be evil, and somedays you might see you have not lost weight at all, but you have lost inches. I measured myself at the start, and plan to remeasure at the end. That way its a surprise. Even if you read how all these people lost a lot of weight in the first week, remind yourself everyone is different. But don't quit, it's worth it to wait it out. Good luck to you!

Breakfast - If you like eggs and bacon, or sausage that makes it easy. An omelet with muchrooms and cheese is always a good start.
Lunch - Taco or Tuna or Chicken Salads, roll ups with deli meat and cheese also a good idea.
Dinner, get the rest of the veggies here, broccoli, cauliflower, etc. Fish, chicken, steak, pork chops,
      Snacks wings and rancj dressing.
      Bikergoddess pizza

For breakfast you can always have last nights left overs
Check out the cookbook down below and the food forums. Also google low carb menus as there are tons on the net.

My suggestion is to make copies of the Acceptable Food List for Induction and then go through the list and highlight the foods you are likely to eat. From there, it's fairly easy to put together menus as simplistic or as complex as you wish. Just make sure you get some leafy greens or other salad veggies to satisfy your 2 or 3 cup requirement daily and plan to spread them out throughout the day, have some veggies from the "other" veggie list for the 1 cup on days where you only eat 2 cups of salad veggies.

Have travel portions for lunches when you are on the go ... I buy pouches of tuna in water to add to salads or to eat with celery stalks. And don't underestimate your use of leftovers. I'm a big fan of cooking once and eating multiple times for the same effort!

When you are alone in your head, you are in a bad neighborhood.

            Hey Moorf,
I'm a kiwi and we have similar stats, and if I can do this, you can too!!

If you want to try out the microwave flax bread recipe, it's a good way to get some additional fiber into your diet. You'll find the ground flax at bin inn and it's called ground linseed there.

Keep chicken nibbles on hand for cravings throughout the day - they got me through my two week induction.

Any other questions with relation to doing this in NZ, post here and I'll help out as much as I can

              Hi Loonatika and All,

I ended up starting my Atkins induction today (Monday) as had plans including BBQ's at the weekend... so, perhaps someone could comment on my first day menu!

Breakfast - Latte (with one sugar :sadblinky ) & Scotch Egg (I know, weird breakfast!)

Lunch - Tomato, Cucumber, Onion and Feta salad (big bowl)

Dinner - Egg Omlette with onion, bacon, double cream and mayo cooked in butter (god this doesn't feel like a diet!).

1.5 litres of Water (have been on the loo all afternoon!) - is this enough water or must I drink more?

Loonatika - what are chicken nibbles? Do you make them yourself?

Hopefully this is the first day of a successful 2 week induction :yes

Oh, and can I drink coffee??

              Cheers All,
              Moorf

              PS - Tomorrows planned menu:

Breakfast - Coffee, Scrambled Egg and Bacon and Mushrooms

              Lunch - Steak & Mushrooms

Dinner - Grilled Chicken, Green Beans and Roast Pepper

Well, you have posted in the wrong place, but it doesn't matter. I am not sure what Scotch eggs are but I know that eggs are legal. Latte's are not unfortunately, especially lattes with sugar.
How big a bowl was your salad. You are limited to 3 cups of veggies and how much feta cheese
Your dinner menu looks perfect and delicious
I am not sure how much a liter of water is. The rule we use for water is 64 oz a day plus an extra 8 oz for every 25 pounds that you want to lose.

A liter is alittle bit more than a quart (32 ounces). You'll need to drink a minumum of 2 liters of water daily.

Coffee is okay as long as its decaffeinated. Caffeine can lower your blood sugar, which leads to hypoglycemia, which leads to unstable insulin levels...Coffee also has carbs. About 1 net carb per 8 ounces (240 ml). And that needs to be counted in your daily totals.

Scotch Eggs are fine, provided they weren't breaded before cooking or that there is bread or other grains/starches/sugar in the meat coating. Dessert, a scotch egg is a peeled hard cooked egg, covered with sausage meat or seasoned ground meat and fried until the meat is cooked.

Make sure too that you eat your veggies in combination with a fat or protein.

                      Thank you!

I now have decaff only in the house :yes and just cream, no milk.

I have also bought some chicken wings to nibble on (thanks loonatika!) but am really craving something sweet (and I don't usually have a sweet tooth!) :sadblinky

Good grief! 2 litres! Oh well, here goes.....

                      Thanks for your input :yes

It's funny what a person will crave when they go on a specific eating plan...like you and something sweet..for me it was, of all things, oatmeal! And I think I've eaten 8 bowls of oatmeal in my whole life, because I keep thinking I would like it, but I never have.

Hang in there for these first two weeks...no doubt you'll get other cravings, and when/if you do, think about whether you are hungry, or just bored, or even thirsty. Keep that water bottle handy 24/7 and you'll be surprised how it gets easier to down 2 liters+ after a while.

You said you like to eat frequently through the day, that's PERFECT for what Atkins is all about. I eat small meals/snacks through my day and then have a small dinner and I feel great...and a little bit spoiled actually...lol

All the best to you, and feel free to post a menu in the 'Review My Menu' forum. :yes

I also have a massive headache - presumably because I have given up caffeine - is this normal and how long will it last - it's killing me :sadblinky

That is, no doubt, Induction Flu, which is exactly what you say, it's your body going through withdrawal from caffiene, sugar, bad carbs, etc. It can last a few days, so drink your water and take tylenol or ibuprofen.
Induction Flu can be any or all of a bunch of symptoms, headache, nausea, fatigue in the legs and in the whole body.

Just keep in mind this will pass and you'll feel absolutely fine when it's all over.
Mine was still going on at day 7, which isn't too common, and I questioned the whole Atkins thing, but I hung in there, and yes, it does pass. :yes
