  • Dying for a Drink

    Hey,

21 here and i am going crazy for a drink. Is there no getting drunk on this diet ever? I know i can start introducing alcohol on OWL but still it has to be rationed right? Is there an alcoholic beverage that I can drink during OWL that will allow me to have 3-4 drinks in one night....I don't care what it is...I'm not picky. By the way this post sounds like I am a drunk but I am not....It is just really hard to socialize and have fun when everyone is drinking.

As far as I know most spirits have 0 carbs; however, be aware that your body will burn the alcohol in your system before burning fat, so your weight loss would be "suspended" until the alcohol is burned.

I had a few drinks one night, rum with diet pepsi when out with friends. I didn't lose for a day or two but I drank knowing full well it would stall me for a few days.

I offer words of caution. I have tried to introduce alcohol in the past, have been careful of what and how much I drink. But something about that third drink makes you say to heck with this woe. What starts as a one night binge too frequently becomes a several months lapse.

I think you might want to do a double take with your friends. I have had lots of fabulous socializing without getting drunk - even when other people have chosen to do so.

It is not like my friends and i want to get together every night and drink ourselves into a stupor....its just nice to be able to go to a club on the weekends and enjoy a few drinks together.

Nope, alcoholic beverages do have carbs in them. Moreover, as someone said before, you'll burn alcohol before burning carbs.

For information however, here's a link with the carb content in different drinks:

I have friends that like to go clubbing - I simply would get diet soda and have fun. Do your friends bug you if you DON'T drink alcohol? If so you might want to think about whether they really are your friends. If they are true friends, you could have water in your glass and as long as you are there with them and enjoying socializing, it wouldn't matter. Good luck.

I should have been more specific instead of saying "spirits". I was talking about hard liquor like rum, whiskey and vodka.

Also, Dr. Atkins says that you can have an occasional glass of wine once you are out of induction as long as you count the carbs. He goes on to say that a 3.5 ounce glass of wine has about 4.3 carbs. Spirits such as scotch, rye, vodka and gin are acceptable. (don't mix with sugary pop, etc)

If you have just started, I would advise to stay away for now. Of course, that is just my own personal opinion.

                  Re: Dying for a Drink

I say you drink whats allowed once your in OWL. A few years ago I lost 60 lbs on this diet, and I would go out almost every weekend and drink some michelob ultras, or the vodka w/ a sugar free mixer, or just plain Tequila if I wanted to get to the point. However, I would plan ahead for the nights out. I would make sure I would get my excercis in for the whole week, and sometime twice that night I would be out. I think it helps burn of the alcohol faster, so you don't take forever before your back into burning fat. Also, beware the urge you get to munch on illegal foods- especially at the end of the night. Oh yeah, and dancing at the club will keep that alcohol burning too. Have fun while you still can- I think you should because your still young, AND because if you don't get to do what you really enjoy (drinking w/ the girls) then you will probably quit the diet altogether. Drink and have fun, just think of all the work you've done so far, and where you want to be in the future.

Personally, I couldn't go to a club or bar, drink diet soda and still have fun.
