  • 6 lbs down, 114 more to go...but....

I must be doing something wrong. While I am most please with my weight-loss thus far. I am starving. After eating a decent-sized meal of carb-free food - meat - cheese- eggs- etc...I am ravenous within two hours.

What's wrong with me??? I can't eat every two hours. I am drinking water like there's no tomorrow...so I know it can't be dehydration. My only indulgence is a cup of coffee in the a.m.

I have yet to succumb to any cravings.......I'm scared that even a sliver of some delicious chocolate will send me into a feeding frenzy.

Anyways, thanks for the support so far. This website is one of the reasons I have been able to stay on track. I have exercised five nights a week so far. That's a record for me.....I usually give up after two or three days.

Good luck to every and please - if someone has any idea why I am so hungry - let me know!!!!!

    Thanks again!

If you are starving then you should eat more. Are you on induction? What day are you on? Those first 2 weeks are tough and especially hard before ketosis kicks in. Once ketosis started, I stopped being hungry and got control of my apetite for the first time in my life. If you are hungry, please eat. Eat a piece of chicken or some bacon and eggs or some roast beef or any other low carb protein. Are you eating veggies during the day? How about posting a days menu and we can help you out a little more... maybe you just arent eating enough?

Chicken legs. They are my salvation in the early days. I remembered how it was and when I was starting out this time I baked up a whole batch, I even ate them cold.

Eat. Just make sure it is high fat/ low carb, but eat. It will get better, as Lacey says. Gnaw a leftover pork chop. Have some cream cheese and celery. Make deviled eggs... Plan 3 meals and 3 snacks if you need to! (What diet lets you do that? This one!)

You might be eating something which though 'legal' for induction is something your body can't handle and is giving you the 'hungries' .
Try listing your menu including quantities and any fats you use to cook with in our 'Review my Menu' forum to see if anyone can suggest any possible culprit.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?

          Hello,
A good supplement to take for sweet cravings is L-Glutamine. Dr. Atkins explains the supplement on page 136 DANDR. I've taken it and I believe in this supplement to help with cravings for sweets. You are allowed 3000 mg a day.
I agree with Elizellen, post your menu so we can see if there's something that may be triggering your hunger.

You shouldn't be eating "carb-free". You should be eating 20 net carbs per day, the majority of them are to come from vegetables. And it's best to spread those carbs out evenly throughout the day. Also the egg you are eating have carbs, so do the cheese.

Dr. Atkins wrote that caffeine messes up your blood glucose by lowering it. When your blood glucose is lowered, you feel hungry, get cravings or have some other symptom of blood glucose instability. That's why Dr. Atkins has a no caffeine rule. So that's what's wrong with you. The caffiene is messing you up.

By the way, decaffeinated coffee still contains caffeine.

                Hello there.

I just wanted to offer my support. I am sorry you are having a bad time. I suspect the caffiene is not helping.

If you have 20 carbs to work with I can tell you that in the past, I ALWAYS lost more weight during the weeks in which I had a salad with lunch and with dinner. The nutrients and fiber is really important. If you are hungry it could be from lack of nutrients due to not eating your salad vegetables. Also, if you are counting your carbs, note all carbs.

(max induction recommended) 3 to 4 oz of cheese = 3 to 4 carbs or more!
(max induction 2 or 3 tbs. per day max!) creamer = carbs
(also limted on induction) splenda = carbs
eggs = about a half a carb per egg
lunch meat (not recommended on induction at all)= carbs

Any processed meats can be cured with sugars. You may be eating rolled up deli meats?

I am very curious to know what your menu is! I hope we can all work this out together. I know I will probably get frusterated at some point and also need this help.

Re: 6 lbs down, 114 more to go...but....

Ok...well here's what my day looks like food-wise and drink-wise:

Breakfast: (varies from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.) An 8 oz cup of coffee with non-dairy creamer...it has 2 carbs in it for every two tablespoons (and I am not using close to two tablespoons.)
-Three or four slices of turkey bacon
-Two or three (usually three...if I can stomach it) eggs - I alternate between fried and hard-boiled.
                  -Huge glass of ice water...

Lunch: (also varies between 12 or 2 p.m.)
-Some form of meat (been loving the brats...and homemade meatballs...seasoning is usually garlic powder and sometimes lemon pepper)
                  - 1/4 of a cup of mashed cauliflower cooked in garlic butter.
                  -Huge glass of water

                  Dinner: (anywhere from 5 to 8 p.m.)
-Some sort of meat (usually fried in olive oil with salt or lemon pepper)
-About 3 oz of cheese (my favorite is colby jack)
-1/2 cup (or 1 full cup) of green beans, cooked with garlic butter.
                  -Huge glass of water.

My snacks between meals usually consist of flavorless pork rinds or vienna sausages...Huge glass of water. SOMETIMES I have another cup of coffee in the afternoon to keep me awake.

Also, something new has started happening.....after I finish about 45 minutes of exercising, I feel weak and sickly. I feel nauseated and like I am going to pass out. I am not working out hard enough to feel this way....something is awry.

I thought I was supposed to feel good?!?

Plus....I am hovering between 235 and 237 lbs......which annoys and distresses me. I know I am not supposed to weigh myself everyday, but I can't help it. I am working so hard and have not lost any weight for a little less than a week.

Am I doing something wrong? (Yes, I'll stop weighing myself everday....it's a hard habit to break.)

                  Thanks, all!

I think I am hypo-glycemic..........that would explain some of my symptoms.

It usually results from someone who is diabetic cutting their carbs.

                    Anyone else diabetic?

Low carb diets are beneficial to diabetics because diabetics have high glucose because their bodies can't use it---either because they lack insulin or their bodies don't respond to insulin. So a diet that limits dietary glucose is good for them because it keeps their glucose in the normal range.

Also what did your doctor say when you told him/her you were going on a low carb diet? IF you are diabetic or have any other medical problem, it's VERY important to tell your doctor that you are on a low carb diet, so that he can adjust your medications and monitor your labs.

                      As for your menu....

Breakfast: (varies from 8 a.m. to 10 a.m.) An 8 oz cup of coffee with non-dairy creamer...it has 2 carbs in it for every two tablespoons (and I am not using close to two tablespoons.)

-Two or three (usually three...if I can stomach it) eggs - I alternate between fried and hard-boiled.
                      -Huge glass of ice water...
I've already addressed the caffeine in my earlier post.so I'm not going to go into that again.

Ditch the non-dairy creamer: it contains sugar in the form of high fructose corn syrup or corn syrup solids. Additionally, it's artificial and typically low fat. Atkins is a high fat diet. Use real cream.

How many carbs does the turkey bacon have?

Each egg you eat has about 1 carb per egg. So be aware of that.

How many carbs does the bratwurst have?

                      Dinner: (anywhere from 5 to 8 p.m.)
-Some sort of meat (usually fried in olive oil with salt or lemon pepper)
-About 3 oz of cheese (my favorite is colby jack)
-1/2 cup (or 1 full cup) of green beans, cooked with garlic butter.
                      -Huge glass of water.
Why so little vegetables? During Atkins the majority of our daily carbs are to be from vegetables. During Atkins Induction, we are to eat 3 cups of the approved vegetables daily. From the menu you posted, you have only been eating about 1/3 of the daily required amount for vegetables.

My snacks between meals usually consist of flavorless pork rinds or vienna sausages...Huge glass of water. SOMETIMES I have another cup of coffee in the afternoon to keep me awake.
How many carbs are in the vienna sausages?

                      And again, the caffeine issue....

The bratwursts have 3 carbs each. The vienna sausages have none. And the non-dairy creamer also has no carbs.

I wasn't eating any veggies because I didn't know there were any we could eat during induction.

I'm not dropping the coffee. One thing at a time. And thanks for the hateful message that someone sent me. That was really supportive.

and I checked the vienna sausages...one package of 6 vienna sausage have 2 carbs.

I added some veggies yesterday and am definitely feeling better! I ate some broccoli and this morning I made some beef stew with a few tomatoes.

What's the skinny on sour cream? I had at least a table spoon of that this morning.
