  • Opinions on Diet Soda?

I know this has been rehashed a lot from looking at old threads, but I wanted to bring it up again: Whats the current prevailing thought on drinking diet soda?

By diet soda, I mean the kind that is splenda sweetened (no aspartame), and no caffeine. Something like Jone's sugar free soda. And only drinking it, of course, if you get all your daily water intake in.

Good idea or bad idea? I really miss the texture of soda! Just one a day...geez, I sound like a crack addict.

Well, in the book it is listed in with the drinks. I would be very careful with it though. If you notice you start getting a lot of cravings then I would try to do with out it again.

I am also a 'coke' addict, so it's very hard for me to do without, but when I see the benefits and my cravings for junk dissappear then it's worth it.

      RE: soda....

      1. Caffeine: Dr. Atkins said to avoid caffeine because it can mess up your blood sugar and cause unstable blood sugar, which can cause things like cravings, jitteryness, insomia, lack of energy, etc. So if the diet soda contains caffeine, don't drink it according to Dr. Atkins.

      2. The only beverage that counts towards the daily water intake is water: spring, filtered, tap or bottled. Coffee, tea, diet sodas, etc. don't count as a part of the daily water goal, according to Dr. Atkins.

      3. Each serving of an artificially sweetened or sugar substitute sweetened food or drink counts as 1 of the 3 daily sweeteners we are allowed during Atkins.

      4. The daily minimum water intake is 64 fluid ounces of water. If you can drink all of that and STILL have room for coffee, tea, diet soda, etc., more power to you!

When I get a craving for soda, I drink a can of caffiene free diet Coke the last thing before I go to bed at night. That way, if it causes cravings, I sleep through them. It works for me!

It's hard to exercise portion control on soda. And too much sweetener can stall. If you're going to drink 8 oz every once in a while it might be okay. If you're going to a fast food place two days in a row and ordering a large diet, you may find you stop losing weight.

          Ask me how I know.

It shouldn't stop your weight loss, it might play with your insulin levels.

Generally, folks who have really tamed the soda monster will tell you, how glad they are that they did. I never got back in the habit of drinking them after the first time I did Atkins. And yes, VERY glad. Specially as expensive as they are getting!

But if they don't cause you to have cravings, you probably don't have to worry too much. They are not the 'kiss of death.'

                Re: Opinions on Diet Soda?

I quit drinking soda for 3 years from 2004-2007. Then when I started working 12 hour shift at work over night I would grab a diet coke or diet mt. dew. Needed a little caffeine. I don't feel like I have an addiction, but when ALL you drink is Water, I just wanted a different taste.
Do you have any other suggestions on something to drink? I don't do tea or coffee.

Water with a slice of lemon, cucumber or both in it it's quite good. Tastes fresher than simple water.

                    Re: Opinions on Diet Soda?

When I get bored with water, I just toss a lemon slice in the water. I don't even squeeze it or anything, just the 'lemon essence' is enough. But I do drink a good bit of water, in a big cup with a sturdy straw. The more I drink, just as 'this is good for me,' the less I look for a beverage as a treat. For some folks, they 'get it down' easier in a bottle with a snap cap, but for me, the straw is the key. Something about being able to suck it down.... dunno, but it works. But listen, try your Diet Rite and see how it goes. We are all highly individual individuals!

                      Re: Opinions on Diet Soda?

I haven't drank soda much since I've been doing Atkins - but the few times I had a hankering for it I got a small glass bottle of sparkling water (comes in plain, lemon or lime in my local store) and it satisfied me.

I found when drinking soda either I was crazy hungry or it killed my hunger .. messed with my blood sugar like mad! Now if I really want something carbonated I have soda water, seems to do the trick without the downsides!

I think its different for everyone, try and see!

Let's face it - diet soda has no nutritional value what so ever! I love my diet pepsi. It has habitually become my afternoon snack and when I go out to eat, the glass at the restarants is bottomless! I have kicked the soda habit before and feel so much better when I don't drink it. Just try to keep the soda to a minimum and you will feel better.

I appreciate it, and I am just trying to get as much advice as possible. I want this diet to work for me better then it has before. I rink Tap water at home and when I go to restaurants (becasue I don't like their water) I add Lemon to it.

Hey there! Congrats on the weight loss so far!

When I first went on Induction, I went out and bought a 12-pack of Diet Rite and have only polished off a few cans because the aftertaste of any kind of artificial sweetener turns me off, even Splenda. Water tastes pretty good, in comparison! Filtered water tastes so much better to me than the tap stuff ... I use a Brita pitcher and it makes a huge difference. Plus, it keeps you flushed out
