  • Unsolicited advice

I'm starting to think the worst part about induction is the unsolicited advice.

I am a nurse. Ergo, I work with doctors. Who like to give looooots of unsolicited advice.

Take today. I'm finally getting to eat lunch at 3pm (this is normal for me - breakfast is a 6 am and I generally don't get hungry until afternoon), so I have my carefully measured 1c of steamed broccoli and piece of steak which has been marinated in garlic-infused olive oil, and I am looking forward to some quality munchy time.

"That's no good - where's the rice? You need some grains on there!"
(this is coming from the doctor who's standing over my shoulder eating a brownie)

"Steak's pretty fatty - wouldn't chicken be better"?

    Enough already!

Just my rant....I just have to keep thinking thin thoughts!

Yeah... unfortunately this happens quite often. I hate it when people who have no idea what my eating 'habits' are make comments on my meals, but on the other hand I don't mind telling them to shut up and eat their rice/brownie.

Just because they are doctors don't mean they know everything!

      Mm, that steak sounds goooooood.

Most medical schools spend about 3 hours maximum on nutrition. And the nutrition they teach is the USDA's Food Pyramid. So, just keep that in mind.

It's the older doctors (not residents, interns or hospitalists---most of whom are directly out of residency) who know a little more about nutrition because they read up and study on their own.

When I worked at a hospital, I got a kick out of watching know-it-all medical students evolve into very good attending physicians who realize they don't know it all.

              Feel your frustration!!

A primary care doctor looked at my lunch as I was paying for it & said "Looks like an Atkins lunch." Before he could say anything more I said "It sure is an Atkins lunch & I've lost 37# by eating this way." He didn't know what to say. I turned & walked away with a big smile on my face!

Maybe the doc will choke on his brownie!!

We are all just proving them wrong!

                Typical conversation....

"Janie, have you lost weight? you look great!"
"Yes,thank you. Lost over 30lbs now"
                "Wow - how?"
                "Atkins"
"Oh you don't want to do that, its so unhealthy"
"Really? Do I look unhealthy? How come it is unhealthy when the excess weight is falling off, I am drinking more water and eating more vegetables than ever, my hair has stopped falling out, my teeth are whiter and my skin is blemish free, yes, tell me again why its unhealthy"
"oh, but, er, well, mmmmm, right...."

                *flicks hair and walks off*

                ;0)

                  I get it too..

"Atkins? That's so bad for you!"

"Please tell me how eating whole foods and plenty of vegetables is bad for me?"

                    Re: Unsolicited advice

I like to remind people that the first rule of Atkins is that you eat 3 cups of veggies a day. People tend to remember the steak and bacon....and forget the veggies.
