  • I am in the wrong path, I guess..

    Hi fellow atkinians
I always hated cookbooks or measuring what you eat........ as in most part of my life either i didn't have access to right measuring tool or the right material for cooking, regarding I spent some years overseas in different countries,,,,so I couldnt get one or more ingredients of the recepiet,

any how,,,,,,, I guess I am not doing atking right ,,,,,I am talking about 20 gr carb,,,,,,,,,,,,today I had a big brocolli (size of a closed fist), some celery and onion in my chicken soup , 1/3 of fist size!! alfalfa sprout, some olives,,,,,,,,,I already passed two cups of veggies.................ah............
although my ketostix is always pink (slight) to average purple (not deep purple) and I measure it everyday.............

some days I eat twice as more of the similar veggies I told you,,as I get hungry........................

so, for me atkins was eating more proteins and stop eating bread and rice (ahhh I used to eat a lot) and fruit, and...........

but I already forgot about 20 gr carb!!!!!!

hm, Hopefully I will change the habit,,,any ideas ?

    good luck

Atkins is supposed to be eating more *fats* not more proteins.

I'm not really sure what you're looking for - a way to measure carbs? It gets easier with time and you can figure out from eyeballing something how many carbs it is...

Thanks for your reply, I also noticed your previous reply in another message, you mentioned the concept of more fat,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,

So, did I get it right? is it more fat or more proteins ? as some day although I don't eat carbs at all, but I dont eat fat too, just proteins, like chicken breast or ....,,,,,,,,but you are mentioning that daily fat in the diet is necessary ??????

gush, my sister lost my atkins book, now no reference for me.......

      Cheers

Atkins is a high fat diet, not a high protein diet. If you are not eating high fat, you are not doing Atkins.

You are also supposed to be eating carbs each day - they are just coming from the veggies. While there are various posts all over the board outlining concepts, I really suggest that you go buy a replacement book pretty much immediately... It will outline all of this, and what you can eat somewhere around page 124. It's not expensive, and it's a great reference for everything with this WoL.

Thanks for reply, good point, I read the books some years ago, and I couldnt recall anything about either protein or fat, but I recall in some of his speeches dr atkins talked about high protein,,,,,,,,but still not sure

I am not sure what your question is or what that webpage has to do with it. I have the book sitting on a table behind me and that's where I get all of my information from. On induction, you should be eating 65% fat, 30% protein, and 5% carbs. Foods while on induction come only from the list of acceptable foods.

The only thing Dr. Atkins mentioned in regards to high protein is that if you eat high protein instead of high fat, your body cannot burn it off, and it turns into glucose causing you to gain, not lose. He also states that people often confuse Atkins with a high protein diet (which seems to be what you're doing).

I am not searching for anything, it's all in the book.

Interesting information, I checked it out, most of the places mentions atkins is "low carb, hight fat, high protein" (the main dilemma for me is high fat alone, since there are some diets which are primarily high fat, my friend was on it, he used to eat big spoons of butter!!yakkkkk!! when you mentioned high fat I was confused , since most of atkins recepiet looked like a normal food to me not a two spoonful of butter every few hours,) anyways,

the normal diet consists of :

                • 57% Carbohydrates (sugar, sweets, bread, cakes)
                • 30% Fats (dairy products, oil)
                • 13% Protein (eggs, milk, meat, poultry, fish)

atkins doubled the protein and fat part both, so it is high protein, high fat, and lowerd sugar,
                Thanks for insight

                Good luck

Re: I am in the wrong path, I guess..

Dr. Atkins states in his book that this diet is not high protein. The link that I found states that you should have about 15-30% protein (on a high carbohydrate diet). So Atkins would not be high protein at all. It's within that percentage.

P.S. Some people on the board have been known to eat a tablespoon of butter as a snack.

Re: I am in the wrong path, I guess..

I started induction a couple of days before I got the book and I can see my first few meals right there in your post

The first key I got from the book was to eat more fat. So I cut down the veggies and added generous amounts of olive oil, mayo (the high fat one), fatty cheeses, anything with fat in it and that made the whole difference.

Re: I am in the wrong path, I guess..

An analysis of the induction menus in the book apparently worked out to the ratio mentioned by Lyssie of 65% fat/30% protein/5% carbs.

You can use one of the food logging websites around (many people here use FitDay - Free Weight Loss and Diet Journal) so once you have entered the food you have eaten it will display the percentages you are achieving.

When I started using it I used to log the food I expected to eat for the day in advance to make sure I was roughly at those ratios, and could adjust quantities accordingly when I ate - like having a little more or less mayo, or a smaller or larger piece of meat etc, or adding extra butter to veggies.

After a while it becomes easy to guesstimate and nowadays I find that just logging my meals each evening seems to be about spot on as I have learned what works.

there is a good thread in this forum about how much fat we need to eat which would be worth reading to get some ideas on how to 'tweak' your ratios.

BTW the 30% protein (medium protein - not high protein) stays about the same throughout our Atkins journey and we reduce the fat gradually once we add the higher carbed foods like high GI fruits, grains and starchy veggies.
Wondering how to get 'most' of your net carbs from your induction veggies?
